Harmes will be out with injury.

(For a fair while too probably)

Did he get hurt during the game?

Yep. Twice. Pretty tough nut.

Not good, hope he is going to be alright?

Thank you

What on earth was the injury?

And why would he have played the entire game out with it when we had a sub?

Doesn't add up.

Mentioned previously, but apparently a wrist injury (which is the main one) but also a nose one.

You'd have to ask Goody about the sub stuff etc.

Riley Beveridge on the AFL website going with the following changes:

In: Viney, Melksham

Out: Sparrow, Chandler

No mention of Harmes so far.

We can't beat St. Kilda kicking 10 goals.

Surprisingly, our forward half play has been pretty efficient across the practice matches and round 1.

If we can get our hands on the ball at stoppages, we should be able to kick the extra goals we need.

It makes sense that Daw isn't ready. You don't just throw him in because he kicked a few in VFL practice matches. It has to be a little more nuanced than that.

that's a bummer re harmes - might explain why he seemed to be stationed more forward than through the midfield in the latter stages of the game - it makes the likely change easier to potentially forecast, particularly if melksham and hibberd still need more match time in their legs...

IN: viney
OUT: harmes

Second hand info passed on, but good source. Copped a wrist injury during the Freo game and has had to have surgery, likely out for 6 weeks or so. Also copped a nose injury as well so did well to just play out the game.

Definitely changes my perspective on his performance somewhat.

if this news is on the money it changes things slightly imo

Chandler in to the 22 alongside Viney

OUT: Harmes (wrist/nose), Sparrow

we already had a glut of inside mids so we can afford to go 2 out and bring some spark into our side. Melky/Bedford into the vest

Hunt is on the edge and 15 disposals minimum or its Hibberd from round 3 onwards and i don't trust him to earn his spot back through performance anytime soon.

i find it amusing how many people were so excited to see Hunt sign a 2yr deal at end of last season and all of a sudden want him dropped, has there been a more unspectacular 9yr servant in our clubs history? wasn't up to it then not sure why he would be in these next two years

People were excited because we re-signed a capable goal kicker. Hunt kicked 21 goals in 2019 and ended the 2020 season with a 4 goal performance.

Any idea why one of our more naturally talented goal kickers and reliable set shot for goal isn't a forward this year?

Shame on me. I saw a post on Facebook about harmes being plastered in Prahan Saturday night. Assumed it was alcohol not plaster on his wrist.

If Harmes is out then it’s unfortunate but can be simpler.

Out Harmes, Jones

In Viney, Chandler

I really worry about Jones ability to handle the speed at Marvel and to pressure at all their running defenders.

If Harmes was playing injured what is the point of the injury sub?

I’d have Sparrow out before Jones, Nathan didn’t have a great game but he was serviceable. If Harmes really is out then I’d agree with those ins.

Saw Harmes on Chapel Street on Saturday night and i'm pretty sure it would have been noticeable if he'd injured his wrist and his nose....

What’s a nice boy like him doing in a place like that.

What I don't like is that you've suggested playing M Brown, Daw and Petty but have not identified who they should replace.

No pace in that trio no one would catch and tackle a Saint runner and they have about 12.

Need to look at Chandler and Viney at least.

Issues for Hunt are the same up front. Loses concentration, lacks awareness and goes missing. But at least fwd this impacts the team less and he can kick a couple of goals every few games. So I’d have him fwd over defence. But if I was choosing the teams he’d be out of the 22. Being quick isn’t enough to be playing back

Put him forward and we miss that manic chasing and harassment that we saw Spargo, Kozzie and ANB. Even Fritta upped his game here.

Hunt is quick but I'm not sure he is capable of hunting opposition forwards for 120 minutes.

Hunt's more likely to impact with counter attack runs from the backline at Marvel than the G I think. And against Freo than the Saints.

His main issue on the weekend was ground balls, which is a shame because he should be better by now, but if he can find a bit of touch and composure over the ball he'll sort that out.

The Saints pressure worries me about him but it worries me about our whole side! And Freo's small forwards were decent with pressure too.

He also played in the guts in the last couple of centre bounces and looked very unhindered.

The bloke that wore the same jumper before him for 7 years for 28 games!

Some serious outs for the Saints.  They get Max King back but he is lacking match practice and would be having nightmares playing against May again.  If any of our Hibberd, Viney or Melksham return they will at least have some match practice.  Injuries will be no excuse for us should we lose this weekend as they are worse off than us.

Petracca and May won us the game last time we played them.  We need an all team effort this week.

We must bank these early wins against wounded opponents.

Edit:  Just saw the news re Harmes' wrist.  Fortunately, I think we have plenty of coverage for him and his role.  If Viney is ready it is an easy swap this or next week.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
