Garry Lyon is very close to the McCartin family and good on him for supporting the kid.

I have only media knowledge of Paddy's concussion issues and what he went thru in 2019 sounded horrendous.  He had no lifestyle at all.  All credit to him for getting to a point where he could be recruited.  I think he spent some time training with Sydney late last year.  But he is a knock or two away from a life damaging injury if not now in the future. If he was my son I would encourage him to find another career.

From an mfc view I don't think it is worth the risk in part because there is no way of knowing how many games he could play and we could easily end up with 3 tall fwds out for a large part of the season.  I would hate for it to be like KK.

We have T Mc, M Brown, LJ and cameos from Petty to play the tall fwd role(s).  For years Richmond played and won a flag with only one tall fwd building a fleet of small players around him.  With the recruitment of Bowey, Laurie plus Kozzie, Spargo etc we can have a high performing fwd line with our list, as long as the game plan maximises the talents we have.

No from me.

Some really good points mate.

Reading this post just reminds me of the sad situation with Shane Tuck and the autopsy report on his brain which was incredibly sad and alarming.

I'd rather McCartin worry about his health then footy if that's the case.

We also have Max who can spend time forward if necessary as a tall option.

If I was going to supplement the list, it would be a backup for Max rather than a key forward (who could then also be a resting forward option).

Why would it even be a consideration? We already have too many key forwards. Even with those 2 injured one of LJ, TMac, and MBrown will most likely miss out. Not to mention Petty (if fit) could fill in for a few weeks in a pinch. 6 key forward options on the list is more than enough. Missing our 2 first choice keys isn't good but it's not like we need to pick up another.

Two separate discussions to me:

1. Do we need to bring in a ready to go key forward? Maybe. At this stage I'd lean towards no with T Mc projecting to be better and M. Brown as well. Especially if they initial indications on B. Brown are positive. If B. Brown is looking more like missing months than just weeks then that changes the equation.

2. Should we look at McCartin. Nope. Just way too many concussions IMO. Poor guy should move on to his next phase in life.

Not the worst idea for a stop gap (assuming his health is ok) but I don’t think we need to be looking at emergency options yet. BB will be back in rounds 2-3 and we have cover in TMac, LJ and M Brown until then.

Nah, lets just go with Goodie’s ‘smalls’ forward line idea that worked so well at the beginning of last year.....

It isn't going to happen, His parents will step in to prevent it.

Why did they let him train at Sydney then? Surely if they were hell bent in stopping this, then training with an AFL club is not a priority?

SEN are obsessed with clubs picking up the phone. So many people, including myself, won't answer calls - if it is important they will leave a message. Plenty of other methods to communicate.

He is a genuinely lovely guy, who is super fit, cleared medicallyy to play again and has talent. So there are 4 positives. Sadly the 1 negative is to much, there is more chance that he receives another big hit than he doesnt and thats the bottom line.

Think we do need someone else though, i know Tmac, Brown, Jackson, Petty even,  but still feels like an opportunity to get the best VFL, WAFL, SANFL full forward and give him a  go.. why not?

I can't go into further details, training and playing are different when there is no contact.

If we get Paddy McCartin would that make us the first club in history that isn't GWS to have the first 3 picks of a draft on the one list?

On topic, if the club doesn't feel as though Mitch Brown will contribute more than the odd cameo here and there and that Jackson is too raw, then we must take advantage of the SPP and select a professional goal kicker to help out for the first month, and then be retained for depth.

Maybe we could send a Facebook DM to Jonny Patton?

Feet can be fixed - AVD, Viney etc

Knees can fixed - Gawn, Tracc etc

Shoulders - Oliver etc

Repeated brain injuries are not something that has been solved as yet.

I think every club has the responsibility to Paddy to not call him.
He may not realise or believe it, but he needs to move on.

Dont forget we have the benefit of having Richo on our coaching panel. He would offer a lot of valuable insight into the kids potential and whether we should take a chance on him.

Im on the fence regarding his susceptibility to concussions - depends on what the medico's can tell us about his condition. If he has been given the all clear, who am i to argue with all of the experts and the AFL.

Worst case, sign him up for a year, lots of performance based conditions etc. Did we lose much on the Bennell experiment?...probably not in the end, but we certainly didn't die wondering.

Heading into the season we had 5 key forwards in Brown, Weid, TMac, M Brown and L Jackson.

If we can't cover a couple of injuries with this group then what is the point of having them on the list?

People saying our key forward depth is poor, please point me to a side with 5 options for key forwards?

It's disappointing for Weid and to an extent Brown, but no excuses.

I think the upside is too good to not have a look at. What if Weids has a poor year and we decide it's time to pull the pin? He's worth a look.

Obviously there's more to it than that, some serious medical assessments would be needed and we've got poor form in that department.

It's a tough question but I don't think the idea should be written off without a long hard look.
