I haven’t seen him so can you elaborate on what aspects are his upside?  Spargo tackles fiercely, and 2021 kicked a lot better than I expected.   Is he taller? A better mark?  
Similarly, for those who have viewed Chandler, how and where does he compare, and differ?

Watched Chandler 2 times this year in the 1s. Played with lots of energy and intensity, but didn't find space.

I like the look of Chandler - if Kozzie and Spargo had not kept their form and health over the year, he would almost certainly be a premiership player.  From what I have seen, Chandler is quick - maybe not as quick as Bedford - but seems to lower his eyes a bit more and use the ball well.  As we saw in his debut in 2019 he can be a tackling machine too.  Plenty to work with - despite him being small in stature.

I really liked us selecting Bailey Laurie in the 2020 draft.  In his draft year, he showed the skills, balance, evasion and smart decision making to push his career for the small half forward or midfield role. We wanted players who could use footskills to deliver the footy. JT got us Bowey and Laurie.  
 

Obviously our midfield is hard to crack into and we have had an abundance of small forwards.   He was limited as most youngsters were in their development due to Covid in 2021 and across 21&22 had some injuries.   I thought he showed development late in 22 and this year at Casey to earn his chance and deserved a few opportunities.  

Round 23 v Hawks. Back into the team (1st game since round 6) for his 3rd game.  14 disposals. 75 minutes game time.  Looked ok in his rotating mid role, creating and decision making but was omitted back to sub role for round 24. 

Round 24, subbed in to replace Melksham. 9 disposals, 2 tackles, 3 score assists in 25 metres. He looked promising and in one excellent play in a contest , he lowered his eyes on disposal to find Fritsch which was a good sign of composure.  
 

Finals week 1. Subbed in to replace Brayshaw after 8 minutes. When he came on, I was really hopeful this could be his real opportunity.  70 minutes game time.  5 disposals (1 kick). 7 metres gained. 2 tackles. 2 turnovers. He looked lost and fumbled twice to give up possession.  Was pushed away from tackle too easily.    Not to be. He was not the reason we lost but must have been disappointed with his night. Likely to be omitted for next week. He’s contracted for 2023 and we need players with good skills, but not sure still where he fits in…  Small half forward or small midfielder? 

I hear you Spirit, players are presented with opportunities some rise to the occasion and scale the wall some don’t realise the importance of the opportunity and the moment and fail to step up. Need to try someone else this week.!!

May seem harsh given his limited opportunities, but I think Bill has been a draft bust. Possible trade bait perhaps? But he won’t be worth much.

Inclined to agree, doesn’t have enough tricks for mine. Not slow but not quick either. If you are going to be an outside player you need a point of difference, don’t know what Laurie’s is yet. But in fairness hasn’t had a great deal of opportunity or continuity to show what he can do. 

I've made no secret that I'm a fan of the kid.

Think its important to remember that players develop at different rates and Laurie has played great consistent footy at VFL level but lacked AFL opportunity in a top 4 team.

He's played two full AFL games and three as sub. His debut he clearly struggled to adapt to the pace of the game, won't be the first debutant that happens to. His 2nd game he got all of 5 minutes after being subbed on incredibly late against Richmond. Started to show some promise against Hawks and his game as sub against Sydney I think highlighted the player he can became when he was subbed on halfway through the third. Clean hands and excellent kick with fantastic agility.

His 5th game was a bloody qualifying final against the best team and he had by far the least amount of game time of any player out there bar brayshaw and ginnivan. He struggled, yes, but again it's his 5th game and 3rd as a sub.

For mine, he has qualities that I think are AFL standard and needs to be given greater opportunity (form warranting) next year. If he can't bridge the inconsistencies in his game after 4 years then perhaps his spot becomes questionable.

However, given we will lose Dunstan, Melksham and perhaps Jordon and Harmes we will have close to zero depth next year (pre-trade/draft). For mine, now is not the time to trade a 3rd/4th year player that has shown excellent consistent form at Casey and one that actually can dispose of the footy well.

Just a reminder of his skills.

No point pointing the blame at one, inexperienced individual that has only played a handful of games

We lost the game for any number of other, more profound reasons.  Having said that I would have had Grundy as the sub but I'm not sure that selection would have changed the result of the match anyway

But that's not a knock on Laurie.  I had Grundy in for team balance as I didn't want JVR or T-Mac in the ruck ... and when we beat the Pies in the KB clash, both Grundy & Gawn played well and were influential

Laurie is contracted for next season so has another season to develop.  Whether he makes it or not is up to the individual

And by the way, what a terrible show is the Ch9 footy show.  It's like a non humourous boys club that doesn't talk about the actual games (with any great detail) ... 2 hours of rubbish

Agree.  As said, he showed signs in round 23 and round 24. Not sure what happened on Thursday night.  Overwhelmed by the pressure or the occasion.  
 

Good point that with the promising signs at least showing his skill, he is likely required depth for 2024 and under contract so unlikely to be let go even if offers come.  But in AFL, everything is seemingly dependable on the offer or trade negotiation.

Unfortunately he was a rabbit stunned by the spotlight on Thursday night. 

Should have been frothing at the mouth for an opportunity like the one that was presented to him.

I'm 179cm, one paced, no aerial game but chuck me in the back pocket and I'll succeed purely on the vibes?

Have to agree with deespencer, he'll get exposed in the backline both for pace and in the air. Only chance there would be a Caleb Daniel style loose defender.

I've been a Laurie believer but think he's only shot would be as a high half forward connector role in competition with Spargo, Sparrow, Chandler, Sharp, Kolt etc...

He's been hard done by in my opinion. Should have had games ahead of Kolt, Spargo and Sharp at various stages throughout the year.

Only got 20min in the awful Alice game where there was zero pressure from the getgo and was the sacrificial lamb there.

Jefferson has played more games this year than Laurie has in two years, while Sharp has played more MFC games than Laurie has in his career. Clearly not rated by Goody. Will be interesting to see if he gets a gig in the last 3 weeks. If not, if any club is interested he should jump at a trade request.

He is an excellent kick, better than most of the regular 22s.

I think it makes sense when looking at the larger picture, we have several players on big salaries and a bit of a salary crunch and needs elsewhere to address.

You need some lower paid players. We needed some cheap depth, the 3rd year for him was extra security and an economic decision for us.

It's hard to judge Laurie. He's never been given a proper run in the seniors.

He's played 12 games and in 7 of them he's been named the starting sub. It's hard to make an impact when you've been stuck on the bench for more than half of your playing career. His VFL performances alone suggest he would've been a better selection than a half-fit Charlie Spargo earlier this season.

Clearly the coaches know something we don't as his papers appear all but stamped.

I wonder if McQualter would have some interest in him. Not saying we’d get a massive trade, but likewise what’s the point of keeping him on if we don’t think he’s worth a game in even the deadest of seasons.
