Adam Goodes never really made it as a ruckman either.

Poor old (young!) Luke will just have to be content with running around all over the ground, being skilful and doing good things with the ball.

I always thought Maxy Gawn would make it but LJ showed much more  in his first year than Maxy did for about 5 seasons.

The same dwayne russell, who said, Paul Roos would never coach at Melbourne☺️

Also who names their kid dwayne?

Big sitting behind micropone dahwayne, i don't care if Doga makes as a ruck or forward, i still like what he shown in his first year, in the AFL. ?

Russell is the worst commentator in Australia. Jackson was great against Goldstein. Clueless comes to mind when I think of Russell

I don't mean to be rude but DerWaynes opinion has as much relevance as the 5hit on the bottom of my shoe.

Unless you walk into your Grandmas house.

Hahaha I've been Living I my Nans house for 30 years and i make sure DerWayne don't come in after me.

In all seriousness tho i was a little disappointed that we choose Luke but after watching him I'm quite pleased he can be a special type of player,  he's great on the deck and has a lot of go in him. As long as he stays away from WA I'll be pleased.

Does it matter what D Russell thinks ?  I don't value that opinion, Of what l have seen LJ is a very valuable cog in the teams make up because he has a good pair of hands he knows where the goals are and showed when in the ruck that he jumps high is mobile and backs up well most of the times.  IMO showed some glimpses of Natinui.

Playing and helping in the ruck at times in a hand full of games is enough to say that he will be a 200 game player and hope it is with our great club. Don't care what's so ever what  DR  thinks.

He’s right about the value of most rucks and them taking time. But then he says Jackson will take time when he played from the second game of the year.

Then he says: all the players taken around Luke Jackson have made an impact. Then names Ash, Stephens, McAsey who all played but had very little actual impact on games.

Nankervis was immense in the finals for the Tigers so the whole basis of the conversation is silly. Dwayne admits as much.

He says Jackson will take time and won’t be the number 1 ruck whilst Gawn is around which isn’t as inflammatory as the OP suggests. But I think it’s fair to say he doesn’t recognise the value Jackson can have whilst not being the number 1.

Close that WA border !!

Ever since  WW2, there was nothing worse than a South Aussie telling a West Aussie he wasn't going to make it at VFL/AFL!!

Ruck, forward, mid doesn’t matter. He’s going to be some player whatever position he plays.

He's calling this after one (shortened) year where we have Max as our main ruckman so Jacko played mostly as a relief ruck?

He also must have been watching something very different to me, as a 19 year old first year player he held his own at ruck contests which is about the most you could expect of someone at that age in that position. Around the ground he looks like he glides through the air, to me he doesn't play like a forward, he plays more like a midfielder/winger.

Incidentally, Derwayne is also one of the most annoying voices involved in footy. I would not be disappointed if Fox Footy announce said he would not be commentating for them next year.

Understatement.

And Derwayne is too dull to realise that Jackson isn't just a ruckman - he could play just about anywhere, including as a midfielder.

Mods change the title of this thread, Dwayne never said that, the headline is a clickbait headline which doesn't even reflect what DWayne said. He said he won't make it as a ruck while max is there, which is true, Jackson might just become the best Ruck forward of all time. Can leap like Nick Nat, but will take more marks, and actually knows how to play the Game, Nick Nat is great in a telephone box but hopeless in open space.

I don't want Jackson getting banged up in the ruck.
Play ya big Ferraris foward.

Was listening to SEN and Derwayne mentioned that Jackson won't make it as a ruck and the only way he'll carve a career in this league is if he's played exclusively as a key forward.

Is he jumping the gun?

Does he have a point?

Was Jackson that poor in his one game as starting ruck V's North and as a relief ruckman in his other 5 games?

Be interested to hear what you all think his best position will be.

Thought Russell was being a little too harsh on the back of a 200cm kid having a 6 game taste.

ADMIN EDIT:

Here is the actual audio.

Ridiculous - there's absolutely no evidence to support this claim. Even if it ended up being true, it's pure speculation.

DR asks the question "What do you want from your ruckman?" That's easy Dwayne. The answer is - Max Gawn.

BTW I too have looked into my crystal ball, and I predict LJ will be an absolute star. ? Dwayne is full of the brown stuff.

To be fair I don't think the actual comments were as damning as the OP makes it out but you be the judge.

When a listener called Dwayne to take him to task about the Jackson comments he absolutely confirmed that he didn’t believe Jackson would make it as a ruck.

This was seperate to the above recording you provided.

That’s what prompted me to start the discussion.

It might be later in the show. I will take a listen and post the audio.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
