Scraping into the 8 in 2021 is also a fail. We need a strong start to the season and we need to challenge for the top 4for the whole season.. I'll be content with position 5 or 6 but not scraping in. Needless to say we have to perform well against the top teams

I completely agree, and i think we have the list to be a top 6 team in 2021, no question. i question if we have a senior coach, FB department capable of getting consistent enough performances.

i'd argue if we're not sitting firmly in the top 8 come mid season next year regardless of fixture, Simon Goodwin needs to go.

Personally i'd prefer to see him go now, i think there are options in the marketplace who the majority of supporters would have more confidence in for 2021.

I agree with you but I don’t think Saad is worth a top 10 pick.   I think you’ll find Carlton will split the pick or give next years 1st rounder and hoping they improve.

In this draft he well might be worth it. Pick 7 is probably more likely going to be 12 or 13.

I don't rate Saad as one of the football elite, but elite players are also going for multiple first round picks too. I don't think pick 7 is paying overs... Losing a player that has essentially featured in the top 3 of your B&F every year he has played isn't insignificant.

.... the issue won't be what Carlton offer, it's that Dodoro will not accept pick 7 IMO.

I don't wanna be "that guy" but i can't help but feel like this could be us in 12 months time if we don't improve in 2021.

i feel like there are enough players a bit concerned about our direction now that another year without finals we could be facing some players wanting to leave

No doubt if we don’t improve things could go downhill fast. The bombers though have lost the faith of their group from the drugs cheating and have lost their culture.

So although we could lose a couple if we don’t improve next year we would still be in a better position than the bombers. We have a lot more youth coming through and havent traded in culture killers like Stringer

Essendon aren't in as much trouble as North, but they a pretty close.  Their core group are getting on, don't really have any young players to be overly excited by.  Saad and Daniher are actually doing them a favour, they will get to add first round picks to their list, get them playing with some senior players around them, bank some Salary Cap or have a red hot crack at Jeremy Cameron.

If the Dons could walk away from Trade week with Cameron, 3 first round draft picks and Ben Brown, you would be pretty happy

I don’t think the pick will slip that far.  The bulldogs next gen player will be get bid on and maybe 1 other.   The Daniher compo may only be an end of 1st rounder but could be 7, so at worst I’d say pick 10.  I think Carlton will trade their pick to Geelong who have 2 1st rounder which will be around the 15-18 mark.  Essendon will then receive 1 of these

7 for Danniher is ridiculous

They will get end of first round at best, is not going on huge money, with his injury history I think he will only get a 3 year contract, the best thing that could happen is the Don's match his offer, then he nominates for the draft.

Fairly certain Sydney has 2 top end academy players, Dogs have Ugle, then Port, Kangas and even the Pies have players that are looking likely first round players... That said, given the lack of under 18 comps, it feels like it could be a bit of a chook raffle.

Wait and see. Brisvegas would be mad to offer 7 for a Player who a) wants to leave and has for 2 years b) has hardly played a game in 2 year because of chronic injury.
With Smaller lists next year Brisvegas have to play this very carefully. Daniher is no certainty to be match fit

bears don't have pick 7 to offer

daniher is a free agent - either the deal the bears are offering is enough to get the peptides compo in that vicinity or they're likely to match and force a trade

suffice to say, they're getting nothing close to what sydney offered last year

If Fantasia, Daniher and Saad go, then with compensation picks and traded picks , you can guarantee that our first pick (23) has dropped further.

This is exactly why we traded out of this draft to get Pickett last year.

One could say very well done by Mahony & co.

same same! My old man got a ticket in the posh section with his mates, I got a ticket on my own and was stuck next a racist Bombers f log. He was even racist to Bombers players. He was politely told to leave after the first qrt and graciously did so. Made the day even worse but then the arrogance of them during and since the drug saga just annoys me so much. Where is the medal Jobe?!?!?!?

Was he one of the essendon supporters brawling with each other in the olympic stand?

We were in the ponsford stand second deck.

Will never forgive Long.

Binman has essendon were i had Carlton

It is no longer a good idea to pity carlton

Schadenfreude to my most hated club

Merrett has one more year to go?

I would be trying to bank picks for next year's draft and the leverage someone out.

The target doesn't need to be Merritt necessarily.

It's all very well saying Bombers will get over-compensated with picks, BUT, just I had hoped, their hubris and reluctance to rebuild means they are openly declaring that they want to get players back in return.  Lol, probably think they'll end up with Curnow.

Quite likely they'll also be trying to grab a superstar marquee la la la player (remember when the Demons were going to be turned around by a hail mary grab at Jonathan Brown? Or, perhaps most precisely relevant, the Judd trade) because that's the kind of decision clubs are pressured to make when impatient rich supporters poke their nose in and insist they know the answer.

So relax, they might get two top ten picks, but then they'll probably trade them all for Jordon De Goey or Josh Kelly on a $6m / 5-year contract.

Essendrug lose badly. It was so obvious that last year the deal should have been done

makes me smile ?

We only won 3 more games than them and were lucky to hold on and beat them. Just putting things into perspective

Only 3?

Richmond and West Coast "only" won three more games than us this year. I suppose we're not that far off them, then?

Look, the gloating over Essendon struggling to retain players is understandable. It's not hard to dislike them. But when we're as devoid of recent success as they are, it's a bit dangerous really. Who knows whether we'll be able to retain all our players if we don't start winning finals soon.

Merrett is an RFA next year.

I see Robo in the Hun this morning suggesting it might be time for Hird to return. How can anyone suggest that the drug cheat coach should ever be back at a club. It beggars belief.

OMG Thought it was only a matter of time before he got out his pet project, but not this early.?

Remember when their supporters said they were going to win the flag around round 5/6 this year?

Schadenfreude at its finest, Absolutely loving watching this club slowly fall apart.

Looks like "The Pharmacist" was doing a much better job at holding the Dons list together than he's been credited with...

Lovely to see things coming apart.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
