I'd go a 2 year KPI-based contract. One year guaranteed, second based on KPIs on the first to trigger the second. That may not prise him from Hawthorn, who knows.

I'd prefer Tom McDonald for Polec and North paying the gap in Polec's contract, but Smith could be a good back up option.

Smith is an interesting one.

He is obviously further down the road of his career, and as Moonie says above, he is probably one calf tear or bad hamstring pull away from having to call it quits.

On the other hand, he would bring great experience, a high work ethic and he would be a fantastic person for someone like Oskar Baker to learn off for a few years.

If you got him for peanuts on a deal you mention above, then I wouldn't be averse to it.

Always have had the impression he thinks we're a joke.

No!

Will be 32 this year.

We are not the MFC Retirement Home or Super Fund.

No thanks way too old, output will probably drop off a cliff next season.

Its working ok for Brisbane?

Are you talking about Burchill?
Think their success is more to do with Fagan and the other players than Burchill or Hodge.

Hodge clearly has played a role in their acceleration. However to be contending and have a role available for an experienced twilight player from strong culture is part of the broader picture. Smith on a 2 year deal when we have one wingman and a maybe wingman in Baker I can see the interest.

Sam Edmund on SEN just mentioned we have an interest in Isaac Smith.

No surprise.

You would think we would be interested in anyone with elite kicking skills and half a yard of pace.

Personally I'd rather take Polec given his age, however given Smith will cost nothing I can see why we might give it a crack.

He also has a lot of premiership experience which could be handy and as he ages could be played off half-back to extend his career.

Facts remain that we need on field leadeship, and leadership in general so i am not opposed to bringing in veteran players who can provide that on the proviso it's a reasonable assumption that the player would be in our best 22 for their specific position most likely for the duration of their contract.

if you're talking about a 2 year deal, on low money, i feel like Smith would be good enough to hold that wing position for 2021 for sure.

The trade desk just mentioned we have given him a 2 year deal.

Are we putting Pick 63 on the table?

He's an unrestricted free agent.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
