God I hate Geelong.

Edit - also, what does this mean for their pursuit of Brad Crouch?  Surely they can't get both?

Tigers will now pounce

The salary cap is a rort.  I know Geelong pay outside of it, and I'm sure other clubs are in the same boat.  Sadly, there will never be a perfect system.

Big claim. Spill the beans.

If GWS force a trade Geelong can use two first round picks and effectively get him 'cheaply'.

Geelong have picks 11, 13 and 18/19.  They can give 11 and 13 to GWS  (which they got on the back Tim Kelly (a 2018 2nd rnd pick #24)).  See below.

Very astute trading.  They were preparing their war chest for 2020 FA's with a few targets in mind (Viney, Crouch and Cameron) so if forced to trade they had the currency.

...The pick swap with GCS was borderline legal but the AFL ok'd it.

If they use 11 and 13 it will be 3 players (Cameron, Stephens, Evans) for the original price of Kelly +/- steak knives. They will do even better if they don't use both picks in a Cameron trade.

I hope GWS (and Adelaide if Geelong go for Crouch) force trades to soak up those 3 first round draft picks.

It’s our own fault we are not a destination club and we need to fix it but that seems really difficult for some reason.

We were on our way with Roos and Jackson but since Roos more so left we have gone south. THIS is the problem.

A good type player will look at the way the top teams play then look at us and the way we play. It’s no contest. If I were a player I wouldn’t choose us either  Generally the only way to get a player to the lower clubs is by giving them crazy $$$$$$$$$$$$$

I wish I could change who I support but unfortunately I am so invested in this nut house I couldn’t do it.

Players want to go to well run and well COACHED clubs. It’s not hard to understand why.

Not saying this about Geelong but there are lots of ways friends of a club can give players benefits:  jobs for family members, paid education, free use of sporting/holiday facilities, post footy career jobs, discounts on any number of purchases and services etc etc.  All on a handshake of course.

Technically they should be caught in the sal cap as '3rd party payments' but not sure if the AFL police them anymore.  Suspect clubs would be very good to ensure there is no audit trail.

Is Cotton On a major sponsor of the Cats?

They are definitely cheating the cap some how.     Just like they cheated their way to flags with Dank and the Weapon.

Stay classy, the ability of the player determines how bad the act is does it.

Pathetic

They are one of the Cats sponsors, that is the point of that joke tweet.

Next you guys will be telling me that there is a welcome cocktail party for members of the Williams and Saad families, who are joining Visy, at their head office.

Oh there is!

Apparently the De Goey and Oliver families have been uninvited.

The only positive out of this is GWS are pretty screwed. Williams and Cameron and two massive losses. the writing is on the wall, a lot of other giants will be calling their agents to flee the sinking ship.  Hopefully we can snag a Kelly/Greene/Himmelberg/Whitfield at some point

Back at ya PSD.

Was it Mitch Clark's girlfriend who we were picking up her tab for university? I can't remember now.

Definitely not saying this as gospel but I thought there were some cheeky deals done somewhere along the lines with real estate a little while back while Bomber Thompson was coach.

If they have been able to make salary cap room for Cameron, given their already high amount of "stars" at the club, it's quite an achievement of book keeping.

I'd love us to go hard after him, but I suspect he's looking to go to one of the big clubs.

tried to link a tweet lmao

Didnt a club just recently offer a new car to a player as an incentive to swap over clubs? That one is pretty obvious. Any range of sponsors or like minded companies can offer incentives outside TPP.

Salary cap is for appearances only. Typical Gil. Nothing to see here!

The rules say they should be included in the TPP (unless for approved and declared 'marquee' payments) as it is a form of cheating the salary cap.

MFCSS says if we did it, some disgruntled ex-player, ex-official would 'sing' and we would be fined for 'not doing something everyone else does' ala fine for 'not tanking'.

Yes, would be just our luck

However, Jaguar could 'loan' a player a lovely new car for the terms of the contract. Or Tourism NT 'gives' a family holiday during the off season to a recruit. Or a sponsor sells a block of land at a remarkably cheap price along the coast to a sister of player X

The modern corporate equivalent of brown paper bags I suppose

Yes, indeed. Wouldnt be too hard to do on the sly, but it only takes one fu** up to have it come out and the AFL to be pushed to act. Look at what that lovely fellow Brock McLean did last time!

I wish someone would give me one of those new brown paper bags, Uncle!

Serious question, can someone explain how is the competition's fairness undermined by free agency?  Every team has to follow a salary cap doesnt it? Its not as if some clubs have extra dollars to spend, its about effectively managing the resources that you have?

If a player wants to take less money to go to a 'destination club' surely thats the result of the club having other positives to offer other than money.  Isn't that a reward for being good financially, on field etc? Seems more fair than arbitrary zones on a map or academies from which recruit players etc.

you should go to the other thread discussing your question

but part of the answer is top clubs getting fa's without having to give up any players or picks at all

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
