I believe we're talking about the one in the clip in this article: https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-2020-melbourne-western-bulldogs-loss-christian-petracca-fox-footy-garry-lyon-afl-ladder/news-story/38ccaf7a995af7ffe59d01d770fc8ca3

Looks to me like the tap was probably always going to go to Petracca and he wasn't going to be tackled by Liberatore quickly enough to prevent him running forward and kicking it.

It's always tough dissecting individual plays like this, but IMO it was a poor choice from Petracca.

I know we’re talking about different incidents but the more disturbing handball(s) that Petracca did against the Bulldogs was the nothing 1m handballs that just puts us further back. It’s not handballing to space to create, its palming off responsibility.

There was one in particular in the last quarter from the goal we had kicked to bring it back to 20 points, we actually had a clear clearance with Petracca running forward now instead of continuing his run and pumping it in there quickly he chose to short handball it I believe to Clarry who then did another short handball again and it ended up in Sparrow’s (I believe) hands who got tackled.

Turnover - forward entry to the dogs - I think they scored from it and that was the game.

It was the exact issue we’d had when losing games, no one taking responsibility and saying “I’m owning this footy and I’m going to get us across the line”.

Bit of a diversion from the thread so I’ll pull it back by asking how a finger injury occurring in the gym can result in missing 4-6 weeks????

I wish they'd try Salem in the forward half. He is a good kick and that is what we lack there. Goodwin needs to stop playing him in the backline, we need more physical players there, until we do Salem is wasted and to a large degree ineffectual.

Been thinking about this. Would he not be better utilised as the outside mid with kicking skills. We are not getting enough from him

Won't go into who obviously, and I know the usual posters will line up to have a crack at me, but a current players family member told me after the Doggies game that at stages during the game that player and another one (both of whom are 'best 22' players) were on the bench just totally confused and getting no instruction at all from Goodwin.

Obviously from that I've expanded that out, but hearing it reinforced things I already thought.

IF the players are confused about what they should be doing then that is damning on the coaches.

It may well be true but the evidence of our failures on the weekend are stark. Our midfield got beaten and our fwd line couldn't keep the ball in.

The coaches know this. They see what we see, with better experience and better stats plus they know what players are trying to do. But they seem powerless to stop it; or, simply refuse to make any meaningful changes to alter the outcomes.

I've changed my team going on the scratch match report.

B: LOCKHART, MAY, LEVER

HB: SALEM, TOMLINSON, HIBBERD

C : LANGDON, PETRACCA, RIVERS

HF: MELKSHAM, BROWN, FRITSCH

F: PICKETT, WEIDEMAN, HUNT

FOLL: GAWN, OLIVER, VINEY

IC: BRAYSHAW, VANDENBERG, JONES, BAKER

Me too.  Id love to see all three of Bedford, Baker and Rivers.

This is the least confident I have been going into a game for some time.  The upside is if we win it will taste so, so sweet.

How has Baker been going in the scratch matches?

Have Saints ever played in Alice? Or NT for that matter?

All I could glean from the match report was that he 'stood out with his speed' which is encouraging I guess.

Let’s hope he’s improved since the last time I saw him play. His disposal was very suspect.

Did anyone hear Max on AFL 360 last night?  His knee was iced up yesterday.  He didn't sound at all confident of playing on Saturday but I'm not sure if he was just joking around; its always a bit hard to tell with Max.

Needs to pass fitness test today.

Whether he is ready or not I guess he has to play as this is literally a real do or die game.

Max certainly didn’t fill me with a whole lot of optimism.

Watching Mitch Wallis tear us apart on the weekend, I couldn't help but think Harmes was capable of something similar. He is far more suited to a forward role and should be rotated through the middle when opposition mids get on top of us (i.e. Bontempelli).

Trent Rivers should be in the role Harmes is playing at the moment.

I agree with Rivers into Harmes spot however I'd move Harmes into Sparrows spot where he thrived in 2018 with a tagging/run with role

Have to disagree with you on this one Luci.

As we know Max has had knee issues in the past and I don't reckon even the slightest risk can be justified.

In any event, I don't think the Max/Pruess issue would in itself be a game changer.

The sort of thing that can cost you in a Grand Final. I just think it is simple coaching stuff. Look Christian, that is not on here mate. Dont do that again. Give him some options if that scenario presents again  . Move on. Next   Maybe Goody has, who knows?

They most certainly have not played in Alice and I dare say Darwin either.

I'd probably rather play St Kilda in Alice than at the GABBA but they seem to have a knack of beating us anytime-anywhere.

No need to take the risk as you say Uncle. By the way, here's a product suggestion to keep the vassals on the Manor under control if things go pear shaped.

Amusing, insofar that Mark Stevens who has been in the industry for decades decided to use a descriptor ‘heavy-hitter’ vs a specific job title.

Now that’s not meant to be disparaging to Alan, he may do a lot of good in his role...

The AFL's sunk costs in refurbishing that old stadium in Shanghai aren't looking too flash

For anyone that has been to Alice for a match are there any conditional things that we may adjust to quicker given our experience with playing there in the past?

I’d really like us to have any kind of advantage to exploit.

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.
