I have memories of Roos saying he could be an A grade defender.

But in saying that he was never exactly known for his defending ability. It’s hard to picture it.

Played juniors as a defender. I saw him playing as a defender in the Nationals at some stage. I know this because I remember telling a mate he was the best young defender since Michael Hurley.

If we could land Hogan cheap, sure. I would love to see him injury free, and getting a run at it on the wing. He would be a nightmare match up, and can hit targets - which is a need for us. I would trial him on the wing, and if that didn't work I'd use him as a third defender. I don't think playing forward suits him these days, there is too much pressure, and you can tell by his body language that he takes it all personally. Terrific player. Hogan will only have a good end to his career if he plays in the red and blue. He needs the stability we bring. During his time at the club, in the latter stages it was difficult for him, yet he still handled himself really well - considering. I think we are the only fit. I'd take him in a heart beat.

The big thing hogan offered besides goals and which none of our current key fwds offer was his up field play, he had a great tank and was arguably more valuable playing as a link player on the wing who could go fwd and create a mismatch. I feel he could play in a team which already has Weid and Jackson, probably taking Melksham or Tomlinsons spot

Certainly would need to fit in / be fitted in with Weed and Jackson .... maybe a mobile tall roaming HFF wing HBF, or as he started out supposedly as CHB.  Could supplant (sadly) what appears to be a seriously chronically injured TMCD

All thought of course on (a) price (b) full medical and psychological assessment of him being 100% right to roll.

3 talls won't work. Hogan will stun Jackson's growth. I say no.

Only if he is still on the smokes ? ?.   He would not have to play as a third tall but rather as an endurance mobile who happens to be tall .

Its a complex e for sure but really comes down to this...

Would be more likely to win against the Doggies today with Jessie in the side?

Very good question .... your answer?  Was he the missing chasing harassing player we needed: I think not, in this case.

Jarrah anyone?

What an incredibly exciting and amazingly talented player of whom we sadly saw so little.

Rushing him onto the field did more damage for sure, Freo were desperate at the time.

He is very much suited at CHF, I Like Weed at FF yet it seems Tmac is playing deeper than him generally.
Hard to tell just from TV what exactly is happening with our gameplan.

Hogan is a huge talent that can play many positions when mentally healthy

Leave Weed at FF and don’t ruck around with him.

And we swapped him for a bloke who excelled as a forward in juniors and became an A grade defender. Circle of life.

Would he come back all tried and tested and clear under a new coach? I wonder....

No from me,

Jesse has too many mental issues and he left Melbourne because he didn't want to live in Melbourne, nothing's changed there.

I'm happy to go with Weid with Gawny and Jacko rotating forward.

The romance of Hogan working around our current group does really get me.

I have mentioned numerous times that we have a very vanilla group and so many players that are all similar size, pace and ability. Jesse as a pinch hitting onballer and mobile forward would be what i think we could desperately use. He's got the ability to be a permanent onballer but can also kick 50 a year, that's wet dream material.

Unfortunately I also hated him cracking the [censored] when things didn't go his way and dropping his head. So I'd lean towards no. If he had a positive twin brother, I'd almost do anything to get him

Is Jackson the positive twin brother?

If we had Hogan, Weid, Jacko and Gawny in the same side, there would be very few teams who could contain us.

Hoges and Jacko can play as mids/forwards, Weid stays within 40m of goal and Gawny can rotate through the forward pocket.

Still don’t think it’s the way to go, but I could be talking myself into it.

If his foot is good  he’s a pretty good upgrade on Tmac.

Left on very good terms so it’s always possible, but getting him out of Perth would be tough

If Freo don’t want him, WC definitely won’t pick him up.

I came here to say he would be an upgrade on TMac right now. The ability to rotate him and Jackson would be great. He has potential down back post Steve May too.

The squad would know if he was a positive or disruptive influence. If he isn't too bad an influence, his talent is worth a late pick in a confused draft.

His ability to take a mark around the ground and is an elite field kick makes him better than at least 8 on our current list even with some of the baggage. He also doesn't sook so much outside of the forward line, I have to agree I never liked the sooking.

Good point. The leaders will know if he is worth the risk, then do due dilligence

Is there the slightest thread of evidence firstly that Jesse and Freo are to part ways and secondly that he wishes to return to The Dees ,Seems wishful thinking at best .Serendipitous events like this just dont happen for Melbourne

I do believe Freo would be happy to offload him but his wage would be the biggest issue as no other club will pay it.

If Fremantle are looking to offload him after chasing him for so long, shouldn’t that set off enough alarm bells?

Exactly. Forget it. Will not happen and happy for this.

Harley cost Fremantle next to nothing and spent four years on their list. They chased Hogan for years before landing him utilising a first and second round pick only to look at offloading since February this year (less than 18 months after signing him). As I said, alarm bells.

Eh?

Freo gave up a first and second round pick to get Bennell

They chased him for years just like they did Hogan

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
