Can we even afford him?

If Jones retires and Viney goes as a FA I would imagine we have more than enough salary cap space.

Medical due diligence will magically show that all his groin issues are behind him just prior to trade period, we will sell the farm to secure him on a lengthy contract, only to have the injury reappear and he never pulls on the guernsey.

  • Demonland changed the title to Dees chasing Daniher?

It's another case of a journalist trying to stay relevant and creating a story out of nothing. We lack scoring, and have issues forward so they'll tie any big forward to us all year round. Nothing in the article actually says we're going after him, all just hypothetical. Melbourne is expected to make enquirers (meaning the journalist expects Melbourne too), we might but in the current environment it's still pure speculation.

"

It means Melbourne is expected to make enquiries about Essendon free agent Joe Daniher to see if he would be interested in making a move across town at season’s end.

The athletic Daniher looms as the perfect fit for the Demons to bolster their forward line if he can overcome his debilitating groin injuries."

'expected'. Yep. Hun journos have no players to hang around so it is now worse than the off-season.

NO WAY

You guys overreact too much. Ofcourse the club will ask about him, doesnt mean they are deadset on making a bold play. Its a business and he offers what we need, common sense please.

I actully looked at the thread title and assume we were chasing Neal for some inspiration.

Daniher's a genuine gun on his day. His 2017 was excellent.

We ought to go hard at Ben Brown who's currently out of form and quibbling over a contract with North.

Can we throw everything we've got at Jeremy Cameron? Or has he re-signed?

Oddly enough, our fitness department is the one aspect of our club that I currently have faith in.

We'd be crazy not to inquire. Every other club will be. There aren't too many forwards capable of kicking 60 goals a year - Daniher is about as close to an instant forwardline fix as you can get. Massive question marks over his fitness, but that's what medicals are for.

If we can get Bennell back on the park, anything is possible.

That would be the first option for sure. I think contracts are still on hold due to covid-19, so no one has re-signed yet.

He won't be on big $ so we can afford him.  Being an RFA and technically no need to trade.

As an RFA Ess will match whatever $ offer is made as likely will only get a 2nd rnd compo pick for him so will force a trade.  So the problem as I see it is their tough line on trades.

Last year they demanded a top 10 pick plus a player from Sydney (Heeney or the like) Sydney didn't bite and nothing happened.  They will most likely demand Petracca or Oliver as part of a package.

Anyone prepared to do that trade?  Not me.

A lot of us said "NO WAY" about Bennell as well.

The idea is sound.  Unless Weideman comes on, or Jackson shows vast improvement in the coming weeks, then you would assume we would be in the market for a key forward.

They've clearly just put 2 and 2 together to make 5 with Daniher - tall forward, out of contract, we need one - but you would assume that if Daniher goes anywhere then it will be interstate.  Having said that, I can't see the club being interested.

Who else is there that is a legit target?  That might open up as the season progresses, but unless something drastic changes, you would expect us to chase someone in the off season.

As I have said. We are the silliest side in the AFL. Chasing Daniher ? Off to the loony bin fellas.

Absolutely has to be teh first thing we do.. how we get them is the question.. at what cost.. financially and also, it will tear the list apart which isnt a bad thing, but Jones will retire and possibly a Brayshaw might go..

So it comes down to who?  the only 3 worth it are :

Daniher - FA / Cameron FA /  -

Casboult UFA /

highly unlikely we would get these guys. Daniher wants out of Victoria and Cameron wont leave GWS. Casboult is not the answer.. so who? We have to look to WAFL / SANFL / VFL.. there are a couple of KPF that will go first round in draft.. but you need a first round pick to get them..

Riley Thilthorpe - SA / Jackson Callow TAS / Kaine Baldwin SA

All 3 rated top 20 prospects. We wont get a look at any of them.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
