Newman and who?

Carlton beat us that Quarter. Disappointing.

Agree. It was not great. We had them and RELAXED.  May is good but needs to do the defensive thing better sometimes.

Five goal lead but Blues got a sniff. Danger signs.

Carlton taking advantage of Max's ruck work.

Stoked at what I'm seeing! I'm paying special close attention to whether the players are looking where they're kicking when going inside 50.

And yes, they are looking, and its showing  :)

these short quarters are [censored].

Maxy is putting on a clinic. They've given up contesting the ruck and are now just trying to steal the tap from Viney, Clarry etc. and is working to some effect.

Yes but what was that arrogant flip out the back from the boundary throw in that went straight to Carlton while all our mids are in front of him? That set up their first goal after May instead of punching tried to take a screamer from behind. I hope a Goody has a word to both. God after last year how could you get over confident in 2 quarters of good football?

You can’t dominate like we did at the start for 4 quarters. Carlton were better that quarter and we pretty much squared the quarter. Need to come out swinging after half time and put it to bed.

Rivers is looking the goods and the run will do Jackson a lot of good. Bennell is doing a job and will be pleased so far.

Let them right back into it with an appalling last five to seven minutes

That last 5-7min was 2019 like, zero poise and they started getting lazy.

Need to smash them early in the 3rd quarter to kill the game and kill their confidence. Not a whole lot to like about that 2nd quarter aside from a couple of little bursts.

Detected a whiff of bathwater that quarter. Hope Goody pulls the plug at halftime!

Teams will have lull patches, it's a fact of life. What has always been the problem with this mob is the gap between the best and worst. To completely turn around the clearance rate like that isn't good enough. We should at least still be getting our hands on it at least 1 in 4. Will need an early one in the 3rd because I can see a long period without a goal coming and the commentators piping up about it.

Yep that flick was far too cute. It's times like this where we're prone to complacency thinking it's already all locked up.

You have to expect Carlton to lift in that sort of situation and you have to lift with them or they will start to catch up!

We need to getting our tackling pressure up again from the start of the 3rd quarter. Do not give them a sniff.

You just wonder how the long time off playing will affect sides hawks faded , only 10 goals pies & tigers ... how will the mfc go in the second half????

If you'd told me before the game that we'd be five goals up at half-time, I would have been thrilled.  Don't panic!

Random observation - is the NRL-style halftime arrangement of sitting around on chairs in rooms a result of COVID protocols? I've just never noticed that before in AFL...

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
