No More Booing or Shouting at Games

Featured Replies

Ok so I’m officially not allowed to attend games anymore.

A leading health figure has suggested the AFL could tell fans to keep booing and shouting to a minimum if they’re allowed into matches later this year.

There are hopes spectators will be permitted into stadiums for late-season games and finals, if the coronavirus pandemic continues to ease around Australia.

However Catherine Bennett, chair of epidemiology at Deakin University, told Nine the league may need to restrict fan behaviour.

“I would think they may have to include as a recommendation – given it will be hard to maintain 1.5 metre between groups anyway – that shouting, hooting may have to be eased, given this will increase the spread from one person,” she said.

“One of the COVID-19 transmission concerns is increased spread when people speak loudly, sing, and therefore cheering along their team.”

Can't wait for the WA state premier to wade in on this one.

(etc)

A leading health figure has revealed that she has never personally attended an AFL match

Now they want to totally control our behaviour. The footy is a great place to let thimgs out of your system. Take that out and we are stuffed.

Who are "they"?  It's not the AFL saying this, it's an epidemiologist suggesting that the AFL consider it.  Storm in a teacup.

I think you'll find he has moved on, even if you haven't!

I’m going to boo and shout twice as loud now.

Just be sure to do it with your mouth closed.

Oh!  I'm going to be rich! All I need to do is invent a facemask design that amplifies sound instead of muffling it.

What's the point, cardboard cutouts are the future anyway.

I reckon the West Coast cutouts would still boo.

You've inadvertently made the case even stronger for no booing or shouting, with that sentence.

Will we be allowed to sing?

A few MFC-supporting mates and I have actually been working on a bit of a 'welcome back celebration' for the boys at our first MCG match when fans are allowed back in to games.

I'll still boo Tom Scully, Collingwood and Adam Goods

And towball Matthew Nicholls

A study done in Japan of the distribution of saliva droplets in a dining context showed that the sound "th" was particularly bad.

Accordingly Hawthorn should be banned until there is a vaccine.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
