The Geelong Cats have been hit with a $40,000 fine for an "inadvertent administrative error" relating to its TPP.

FULL STORY >> https://bit.ly/32PXxyc

I'm sure that unlike Woolworths and a few of the high flying chefs their administrative error didn't involve underpaying the players.

"We accidentally, inadvertently recorded GAJ as being on $40K base salary with $2K match fees. Inadvertently, accidentally, to our complete shock and surprise, he was actually being paid $900K. We do not understand how this freak error could have occurred. The unpaid intern responsible for negotiating his contact and lodging the paperwork has been sacked. The highly paid executive and board member responsible for hiding this from the AFL has also been sacked."

This actually seems legit to me. Someone forgot to carry the "y" and it didn't add up.

Maybe I'm to young and naive?

The lack of detail in the announcement suggests it's far more sinister than a simple oops.

This has been going on for 8 years? In that time they've signed Dangerfield, Ablett Jnr, who else?

How does Carlton feel about the $40k 'penalty'?

Sir, it is clear that footy season is nearly upon us. The emotion and hate is back. Isn't great.

Did you leave "it" out?

The fact Geelong have been paying over the salary cap for 8 years tells me they only self reported once the AFL HQ finally got wind of it. They should of been fined 500k! It might seem a bit steep, but it's complete rubbish the Geelong finance department didn't pick up on over expenditure.

Salary cap inaccuracies deserve more than a $50k fine

Yep. Players have been recruited outside the laws

8 years is a long time to not notice a thing

Absolute BS

Clubs perceived by the AFL to be powerful regularly get off lightly.  Yet minnows like us get whacked all the time.  To call the error "inadvertent" is a cop out of the highest order.  A failure to abide by your fiduciary obligations, for any "business" is inexcusable.  Ignorance is no excuse under the Law

Too difficult to work out if the punishment fits the crime when there is no information supplied.

We will just have to trust the AFL have done the right thing... Its not like the AFL have tried to cover things up before.

Its been a repeated mistake over 8 years! Ole mate Ken Wood obviously isn't looking to hard!

They gained an advantage over the other clubs for 8 years and played in a heap of finals, its irrelevant whether the error was inadvertent or not. And how does one prove an error is inadvertent and not deliberate !?!?

Curious that there was no mention of the amount they were over the TPP, which makes me suspect that it wasn't an insignificant amount. Also curious, that the error was discovered by the new chief financial officer while others who over saw it have convenient left

People need to be jumping up and down about this and demanding some transparency.

It wasn't even written to suggest the issue was an over-payment, it only suggested something like a lodgement error. The lack of information and the misinformation really make it look like this is a complete cover up.

Genuine fines, draft sanctions. These are the penalties for over-payment, not $5K a year.
