Melbourne Airport expansion threatens future of Essendon Football Club

Bombers fans chipped in $10m as part of The Hangarโ€™s multimillion-dollar facelift in 2021 โ€” but all that work could soon be undone.

Disband them then, problem solved.

One day when I open this thread or the Kozzie P thread, I will read we have signed.....blah blah blah. I am patient but I hope I haven't died yet.

I wouldn't be smart about it.

They will get kicked out of Tullamarine, find new land and build a new facility all before we get something in the MOPT.ย ย

I'm going to go and stand on my own here but in some ways a facility down at Casey can be a good thing.ย  As a lifestyle option for a professional footballer living down the peninsula can be attractive. Works for Geelong.

Hi Redleg. I'm not prepared to pay $1 to Rupert Murdoch to view the article but I'm pretty sure that the new runway will run north to south and further west than the current runway so it's hard to see how that will affect The Hangar (unfortunately). Brimbank Council said the increase in air traffic would adversely affect the health of it's residents but wiping out a facility where Essendon supporters congregate would surely balance things out.ย

I spoke with someone over the weekend who is well educated in AFL projects such as our challenges. They believed the new facility at AAMI cap park was looking good until fully quoted and Government then baulked due to cost. It was well above plan.

same person a huge fan on Caulfield Racecourse for us.ย

Made that exact point so I am with you illย

@Rab D Nesbittย I think the airport has plans to add not just a 3rd but also 4th runway in the future. The runway would also run east-west at the southern end forming like a # shape, with the taxiways running right through the EFC training grounds (and if they donโ€™t, plans should be altered to make sure they do)

Well, thatโ€™s excellent news then. It also means there will be fewer flights coming over my house.ย

There is no way the Essendon facility will be affected by any runway or taxiway changes.ย
R27L is to be North of it , through the taxi cab holding area. R34 L is to be W of existing R34.

And given R27 L was meant to be built 30 years ago, it will probably be finished before we get a facility.

Perhaps it is their offsite injection rooms that will be affected?

I bet you said the same thing about seeing our next flag... things can change quickly

For what it is worth I believe the MFC met with 'Spring St' earlier in the week.ย  About what I dont know but I would assume it is about our 'home base'.

There is activity but is there progress?

Inย  relation to the home base saga.ย  I believe we are at loggerheads with ourselves. There are two sides to this subject, WANT and NEED

We want to have all our training and admin departments in one place at the G , or as close as possible. But we dont need this for our club. There is a difference, I dont think in this day we can get the want. But I believe we can get the need.

To me this is the Caufield race course. Now I am not privy to any of the costings, planing and all the gov [censored] but Caufield meets our need.

By the way I dont live within 40ks of Caufield.

Point of order Mr Fence. Although the Bonnie Doon FC already wear the ugly Essendon gear we in the general vicinity do not want that malodorous rabble (EFC) anywhere near us.ย

Off to Tasmania with them I say.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmyโ€™s inclusive bannerโ€”"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwoodโ€™s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.ย

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecastโ€”20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze โ€” expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kateโ€™s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwoodโ€™s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.
