Captaincy 2020

Featured Replies

I'd rather hear it from the horses mouth first instead of a player.

  • Demonland changed the title to Gawn Co-Captain in 2020?

Would be staggered if he wasn’t named co-captain. For some reason I can’t see Viney doing the gig himself, even after 3 or so years at the helm.

Gawn deserves to Captain this club. Hopefully his form doesn’t drop off as a result.

The long and the short of it is it'll be Max & Jack.

Would that be Jack & the Beanstalk??

I hope he’s right. Maxy is the type of guy that glues clubs together and I just don’t think jack is the same. But perhaps the two of them together will work.

I'd rather Gawn take the title outright from Viney.

But that's just me personally..

Harmsey on the selection panel?

Funnily enough, yes. But it's a panel of about 44

I actually think he will be an even better player because of it. I really think he will thrive in the role of co-captain.

Captaincy of an AFL club has never seemed a big thing to me. Sure off field example is something and I expect it is more important than on field example which would be useful. There are so many coaches etc what really is the role of a captain these days anyway.

More concerned that in recent times our captaincy choices have in the main co-incided with form drops that have been exacerbated by the captaincy issue. (ie you can't drop the captain ethos).

Happy for Gawn to be a captain but not sure that it has done or will do Viney much good.

On another note I'd like to see line leaders (forward, mid and back) that were used to vary the gameplan/ tempo etc in real time. These guys need to be the strategists and in synch with whoever is responsible in the coaching box for the gameplan.

Footballers are often not as switched on as we think they are. My best example is a game at Casey midway through this year. The opposition ran a player off the bench rather than participate in the 6-6-6 rule. The MFC listed players complained to the umpires yet the tactic had been adopted by another club the week before at AFL level. Where was the communication to inform the players of this possibility and our reaction to it.

C'mon... Harmsey eating an apple would look exactly like a horses mouth

According to Harmes ...

I'm comfortable with this. I don't know if Gawn's knee would hold up to the weight of sole captaincy.

Hopefully, Harmes hasn't spoken too early and spoilt a big club announcement!

Nonethless, will be delighted for Max to be a co-cap.

I reckon he could eat an apple through a tennis racket.

Viney does not deserve to be a captain. He should stand aside. I sat next to the players race against Geelong this year at kardinia and was staggered at the lack of words from both skippers as they came out of the race. No wonder we were so flat that night. He doesn’t talk out on the field and is too busy trying to break tackles and prove how tough he is to actually focus on using the ball for the team’s advantage. His turnovers and moments of getting caught with the ball are always huge momentum shifters. I reckon he needs to focus on improving his game and leave the captaincy to someone else.

Disagree. Viney was a strong leader in the two finals at the G last year.

I think what we lack are the playing coach type of leaders on the field. The best example I can think of currently is Luke Hodge. Directs the play, encourages players, teaches the young guys on the field.

So you agree that neither nor Jones lead and direct out on the field? I think we are making the same point. He does not lead out on the field and this year, he was found out. He had little impact. His game needs work. He doesn’t lead. Let him focus on his game.

Unfortunately Viney isn't that either. Probably the two blokes who I have seen become really animated on field are Gawn and Lever.

To me these two are the stand out leaders for me personally.

Unfortunately  i suspect jack doesn't have the emotional awareness that he should hand over to max.

History is littered with these types and we have ours.

How could you possibly know that?

I get that people are a little critical of him as a leader, but that's a definitive statement that you can't possibly know for sure.  The bloke has consistently been voted into the role by the players, so he must be doing a few things right, otherwise it wouldn't happen.

He was NOT voted by the players. That’s a load of crap. He was put into the role by Goodwin and Jones was blindsided. It caused a rift with the playing group. it was a dumb move.

It's most definitely my preference.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

It's Game Day and the Demons are back at the MCG and have a massive challenge ahead of them as they take on Premiership contender the Gold Coast Suns. What do you want to see from the Dees today?

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
