There’s always a flight risk with recruits from SA and WA but ultimately, you have to back yourself and your system in to keep good interstaters happy and invested in you.

If we want Weightman we need to split 6 or 8 with Geelong for 14 and 17 and get an extra player out of it. Doubt any other team would pick a small forward (that is not Cyril Rioli) before 15. It would be crazy to take him at 8.

Yes agreed.

definitely like stephens, then kemp or young. if we can land martin, or bennell with sam murray then i would go with kemp because i think we could wait for him.

Kemp and Stephens if at all possible I think.

Although I think we’d have to settle for Kemp/Stephens and Weightman/Gould.

Still a good return.

If Serong was still available at 11, it would be the biggest steal of all time

go-home factor

plus recent history of sanfl kids is that whilst they might play sanfl seniors and even in finals series / multiple premierships at senior level - see aish, toumpas, trengove - they tend to struggle at afl level

Well we can still draft Dylan Stephens, because he might’ve played for SA but I believe he’s from Red Cliffs/Mildura in Victoria. Doubt there’s a go home factor there.

I think it’s important not to overate accumulating stats in the SANFL form. Players do seem to rack up stats, but they also lacked the athleticism to play well at AFL level. If Stephens has the fitness, speed and contested ball ability there’s no reason not to take him.

Fyfe at 20?

Lots of people across many threads suggesting particular players will be available at 3 but not at 8. So for my own curiousity. Where are everyone's own top 10 Phantom drafts? (Assume no trading)

Mine (At least for now):

1. (GC) Rowell

2. (GC) Anderson

3. (MELB) Young

4. (ADEL) Stephens

5. (GWS) Green (matching bid)

6. (SYD) Serong

7. (FREM) Kemp

8. (MELB) Flanders

9. (HAW) Maginness (matching bid)

10. (CARL) Ash

Thoughts:

Adelaide puzzles me I really don't know what they'll do, personally, I think Kemp would be their best choice to build the new era around, but given the big gap to their next pick they'll struggle to go past the talented local.

Serong suits Sydney the most, with Jones on the move and Paley likely following next year but clearly they bid

With 2 late top 10 picks Freo is in the perfect position to take the punt on Kemp. Working with Fyfe would do wonders for his development

If Flanders or Serong slip to 8 I think we'd be negligent not to take them, my current list has Flanders slip. But if they're gone we'll probably as expected take Weightman

Maginness would slot right into Carltons midfield next to Cripps and Walsh, so they bid and have it matched. Before taking Ash as the ready replacement for Simpso

Flanders highlights are not great - looks pretty slow and his kicking isn't great - a big no from me
Young on the other hand is a great option

My read:

Not really a fan of Flanders. I think he’ll struggle to get to 50 AFL games. Just don’t see what is exceptional about him.

Young good, but I think heavily overrated. Similar to a smaller Haynes if you’re lucky, but that’s best case scenario.

Serong has smarts, but a bit slow & small.

Kemp could be a Dangerfield or a Blake Acres, hard to gauge. Do you roll the dice on him?

Stephens will be a gun wingman, if that’s what you are after. I’d like him and I’d take him at 3.

Ash like Adam Saad. Handy, but not elite.

Weightman will be similar to Jack Higgins or a modern-day Tiprat Milne at best. Fills a long term need for us.

I’d stay away from talls. Too easy for them against little to no opposition.

I’d happily bid on and take Green also. We might be a bit heavy in terms of contested inside mids, but it’s a good problem to have & you take the quality when it’s on offer.

Its Young.. then one of Stephens, Kemp or Weightman i m imagine, they are the players that fit. Assuming Serong will go at 5, 6 or 7.

In his expanded Phantom Draft, Knightmare predicts Melbourne will take Hayden Young  with pick 3 (not splitting the pick or nominating Tom Green) and Brodie Kemp with its next pick.

Expanded AFL Phantom Draft: Risers, sliders and new names

This would be the best outcome. But given what Mahoney has said about drafting a small forward and Taylor's reported love of Weightman, I wouldn't be surprised if we picked him and let Kemp slide. I'd be [censored], though.

Only MFC would take a player expected to go around 15 at pick 8

What do you think of Gould 'Mach'???

I've only seen highlights but a lot to like in those...

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
