draft-bonanza-suns-get-top-picks-secondrounder-darwin-zone-more

It's three years of draft assistance includes:

  • Picks No.1 and No.2 at the 2019 NAB AFL Draft.
  • The first pick of the second round (currently pick No.20) at the 2019 NAB AFL Draft.
  • Mid first-round pick (currently pick No.11) at the 2020 NAB AFL Draft.
  • The first pick of the second round (currently Pick.19) at the 2021 NAB AFL Draft

That is two priority picks this year.  One at the start and one at the end of round 1.  The public dialogue was about either the start or the end.  Staggering that they get both!

Absolutely over the top gifting by League HQ.

Completely unjustifiable when their reasoning for MFC not getting priority picks is used (which ofc it wasnt)

The AFL has given up even pretending to be something other than a scam.

Looks like they get pick1, pushing their own pick1 they already had to pick 2. So yeah they get pick 1 and 2 and Melbourne gets a nice F@#k you from the AFL

Also got Pick 20 as an extra pick at the start of Round 2. Their existing pick got traded to Brisbane last year I think.

Let's not sugar coat it.

First and last picks in round 1 this year then a middle round 1 pick next year and another end of first round the following year

They can call it round 2 all they want but it's essentially 4 first round picks

We got royally french connectioned in 2010,11 when the Suns came in with the compromised draft, as well as BWS in 2012-13.

They have taken away our draft zone in Darwin which the club would have been aware of.

They have now got our pick 2 and French Connectioned us again, surely, surely we are going to recoup all that has been lost.

If i was Bartlett and Pert i would have been demanding overs in something in return.

it gets better / worse:

The Suns will also receive expanded academy player access for 3 years including:
• Provision of the Darwin region as an academy zone.
• Ability to pre-sign Gold Coast SUNS academy players (including those from Darwin) without bidding.
• Increased rookie list, up to 10 players

the big one there is the ability to sign academy players without bidding

Wow...

How bad does the MFC have to be to get that kind of help?

So let's get this straight, the AFL bring in the 2 x expansions clubs give them 2 - 3 years to get established.

Long story short - the AFL and GC have f'd up the management of the club so the AFL decide to hand out picks willy nillie, yet if it was a Vic club its tough luck.

So clubs like the MFC, saints etc (the bottom feeders) just have to cop it because what are they going to do? Thanks Gil, you've shown again it's all about  your pay packet and not the integrity of the game.

Lukoscious and King likely to depart next year helps the case for this excessive assistance package.

Expansion clubs really have screwed us. There really was no worse time to bottom out than when they came in and the AFL gave them everything.

actually come to think of it, every expansion club coming in since 1859 has screwed us

True, but our horrendous drafting didn't help either.

If SOS did a good job at GWS they would have been going for their third straight premiership in a row this year such was the number of top picks they wasted.

If we can't land a star with pick 3 this year then we don't deserve to be in the competition.

Jordan Gysbets at pick 11 when he was calculated to go mid 2nd round and then Lucas Cook at pick 12 who again was touted as a mid 2nd round draft pick are just prime examples of blunders that have bitten us in the [censored].

Absolute farce. To gift them pick 2 and then throw in 3 more picks, plus the unknown benefits the academy picks could become, plus extra rookie spots. This is disgraceful.

It either goes 2 ways for the suns:
1. They squander this and ruin the careers of 4 footballers for no reason
2. It works out and they become a super team comparable to GWS and the AFL have both of their darlings in the top 4 for years to come.

Outrageous.

Honestly who gives a [censored]. It sucks not being able to get Noah Anderson sure but how many times have we stuffed our picks up anyway.... . Also look at Richmond they didn' build there success around high draft picks they actually fluffed em like us.

But our problems lie elsewhere. And will not be answered in the draft.

Build a strong club and stop relying on draft picks! This is also gold Coasts' issue

While I'm not as fussed about them getting the priority picks. My main issue is the academy concessions. Hypothetically, what happens if in 2 years time they're in finals and a player from Darwin is touted to go Pick 1? What will the AFL do then?

Also, the fact that the AFL have said that they can take away the concessions whenever they chose, then what's to say Gold Coast trade out that future pick to 1 up themselves? Kind of shafts their ability to do what they like with the pick if the AFL can just remove it.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
