Roos is consistent with Tomlinson.

When he was on the market early in his career we were not interested. Obviously Roos didn't/doesn't rate him.

I agree with Roos, he's not what we need, yes we need outside run & he's a nice enough player but he doesn't make an impact.

The best game I've seen Tomlinson play was at CHB against Dawes...hardly a ringing endorsement.

I really hope we have Langdon tied up.

I suspect Roos sees him as insufficient for our needs due the value he places on skills for the position, i.e. retaining possession.

I don’t necessarily agree that Tomlinson can’t fulfil this need.

I don't see what need he fills, i don't think he's a key forward, maybe on the wing but i will watch with interest to see if they have a role in mind of if it's just recruiting for the sake of it.

He's perfectly suited to the wing even if he doesn't have A grade pace. The wing is such a specialized position. You need to be able to push back to help in the defenders, while also be an option going forward and also an option forward. With his elite endurance and size he can play this role perfectly. At the moment none of our mids work hard enough both ways and was the reason why Gus was put onto the wing as he was one of the only ones who would push back defensively even though its not his best position, its what was best for the team.

I thought Roos said we need wingmen with speed.  Not sure if he meant burst speed or endurance speed.  They are different to someone taking a run down the fat side of the ground.

Roughly off the top of my head

He said he rated Tomlinson but thought we'd be after outside - im not exactly sure what he was suggesting.

I personally have no real opinion. You have to trust the people im charge have a strategy in place.

Afterall its the coaches etc who live and die by the sword.

Roos like us on demon land are just offering opinions

We may not give any draft picks up to get Thomlinson, but we will need to give a decent 4 year deal and he does take up a spot on the list.

Is he better than what we currently have? Yes.

Is he spot on what we need? Not sure, wouldn't exactly call him an elite outsider.

It could be argued that the SC space that Thomlinson would fill could be used as part of a deal getting a bigger fish this year, next year or the year after.

It's not as easy as saying "he costs us nothing".

Are there any 'elite' outsiders available?

We are desperate for elite running power on wing and flanks. Tomlinson does not have to be a superstar he just has to have the attributes to play his role.  His status as an unrestricted free agent means we don't have to give up any assets. Salary cap wise there is no talk that current admin is overpaying players as rumoured in past.

Langdon and Tomlinson fill a pretty obvious need. Baker is promising. Who knows we might not play inside mids on the wing in 2020. Imagine that!

I remember watching him play a great game against us up in Canberra 2 years back, based on that I think he would be a great pickup, If it means one  or both of the Wagners isn't playing it massive positive for to me

GWS utility Adam Tomlinson is set to return home to Victoria and join Melbourne this off-season, reports Nine.

The 26-year-old had played 80 of 81 games for the Giants before being dropped for the elimination final win over the Western Bulldogs on Saturday.

An unrestricted free agent this year, Tomlinson has often been linked to St Kilda and Carlton in previous trade periods but is now likely to sign with the Demons.

The Dees will lure Tomlinson on a lengthy deal, likely to be four years.

What do Demonlanders think?

Um, if keen on knowing what Demonlanders think about the idea of drafting Adam Tomlinson, this thread would be a good place to start

The greatest need we have at the moment is a better quality depth.  Tomlinson will ensure players like the Wagner's are not only pushed out of starting 22s, but also further down the depth chain.

We have smarter people than us in charge of player contracts/salary cap.  This bloke won't cost us a pick or player to get him in, and will have his contract structured so that it will ensure we are still in a position in the future to land someone worth more $ if they happen to want to come to us (god help them).

Disappointed we are not considering  another sub 6-footer to add to the 15 already on our list!

But to answer your question, Tomlinson would be an extremely astute pick up as an unrestricted free agent.

What's his kicking like? i've honestly not seen that much of him, i always thought he seemed a bit like a high endurance high half forward type, maybe a third forward, but from memory he's played some reasonable footy down back as well?

Posted (edited)

Definitely a player we could use.

@Patches O’houlihan from what I've seen he kicks well on both sides.

He plays his best football on the wing. Although as others have stated he can play a variety of roles with his size and endurance. He has always been able to pinch hit in the ruck which would be really handy for us in not having to use a forward in this role.

He doesn't rack up a lot of the football but because of his running he is able to run and spread into space (a major part of GWS's gameplan) to open up the ground. He is a decent contested mark as well. Something we've been desperate for further up the ground. We badly need more players who can take a solid mark (other then Max) to relieve pressure in the middle of the ground.

To me its a no brainer. We badly missed a bigger body playing up the ground this year and although he doesn't have the same grunt and physical presence AVB has he can definitely play that wing/high HF role consistently. You know what you're going to get from him.

His stat breakdown shows he was a bit down on inside 50's this year but as you can see from his stats he contributes in a number of key areas.

I think he's a bit vanilla but who knows, he might give us something.

Will be better than our other options if they are looking at playing him on the wing...

My biggest concern is the Tigers are more than likely going to win the flag putting pace in to games. Serious speed all over the park. What do we do with a 194cm wingman if the Tigers are chopping us up?

The counter to that is the Tigers are using Josh Caddy on the wing now in a similar role to Mayne at Collingwood and Mitch Robinson at Brisbane. Those guys might be more nimble than Tomlinson but it's not exactly an unfair fight. A bigger body who can be a marking option on the wing seems to make sense. Those guys all bring really good tackling as well for when they are sealing the edges of stoppages or going back and being the first man back in the backline, can Tomlinson do that?

Hill and/or Martin.

We either didn't chase them or didn't chase hard enough.

Langdon and Tomlinson are upgrades from what we have, but neither are what we really want.

I think the idea will be to get these two guys as wingers and then add some quick small forwards at the draft.

I guess there is also the potential to offer our first round pick to Sydney for Papley and a downgrade.

Four years on good dollars is a long time if we get it wrong

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
