It's just not gonna happen unfortunately. Even if it did preseason would be an issue with the MCG hosting cricket

The proposed parkland is where the club held its family day this season. It is a great location and much better suited to being an open park and oval. The only drawback is it is on quite a slope so no jokes about downhill skiers plaease.

You can run it across that corner of land and pretty much fit it in without losing many trees. The trees that would be lost could be replaced with native varieties. 

It would stop an area being used as a car park (a dying trend anyway) and replace it with an oval that can be used for a functional purpose whilst still maintaining a park feel.

Pretty much all you are doing is levelling an area of grass, fencing it and painting a few lines.

With the right approach it should be allowed to happen. 

Getting the funding, planning and design of the building over the train line should be the harder part of the project!

the business case for the Council would presumably run along the lines that with reduced car park revenue the Council will need to replace that money in order to maintain the park etc etc. So we would rent the oval for an agreed amount.

The development over the rail lines will stand or fall in the first instance as to whether trains need to be re-scheduled for building works. Then there is the acquisition cost issue that the Government will need to subsidize or forego.Finally there is the additional build cost by such a site.

A bridge too far or a a mountain too tall spring to mind but let's see.

Interesting when you look at google maps to see why we play better on narrow grounds and collingwood and Richmond play better on grounds the size of MCG.

collingwoods training ground is exact size of mcg playing surface and Richmond’s is similar, Goschs is super narrow!

I love this idea, being from the northern suburbs this is far more accessible and is as close to the G as we're likely to get. Far prefer this to anything in the eastern suburbs or Docklands.

Sounds a great idea, but if i remember correctly isn't this quite a sloping site?  So one would need to either dig at the northern end or build up at the southern end or both.

I just can't envisage the loonie left Greens allowing it though.

Look at the complaints State governments are getting regarding stadium developments in Melbourne and Sydney.

To make these schemes work you need to take a complex that has a cost to Council and say we will maintain it in return for using it for x hours and then it is public space for the remainder. Yarra Park doesn't meet the criteria.

Gosch's paddock on the other does albeit that it is not a great site. Another example is the Magpies with the old greyhound track.

A professional quality oval for community use would be a huge win for the council. Especially with the rise of Women's footy. They'd have no problems finding clubs to allocate it to. 

The development over the train tracks comes down to whether it will be approved for apartments next to our site.

You put a few apartment buildings and you've got a council rates bonanza. That's the income councils love. Shutting down the trains for a select period of time to build over the eye saw that is exposed tracks and create useful community space and housing. That's a win win. 

Then Melbourne build next door with a community oval, medical facilities, maybe even make the gym public use outside of certain hours, some form of Indigenous cultural centre - pretty much you are doing the council a favour!

Yarra Park is within the Melbourne City Council boundaries.  But I believe Yarra Park is Crown Land so owned by the Vic Gov.  Not sure if they need Council permits to change the use of Crown Land but the Gov would need to deal with managing public lobby groups etc.

There is already a precedent for this.  Esternwick station was redeveloped along these lines about 20 years ago.

For what it’s worth I always thought Fawlkner Park would be an option, mentioned it in another thread about facilities, will settle with Yarra Park though ??

Comments below article in The Hun have some up in arms that the govt would be giving up public park space to a football club. Not really accurate at all, as it would value add to the park and only be used by club during training times. I'm guessing it would have a basic fence like Goschs. Assuming there is no building proposed on parkland and there are no decent sized trees involved, I can't see the problem. Goschs Paddock oval could even have its posts and fence removed to make it less of a sports ground.
