Angus Brayshaw to Fremantle Rumours

Lord Nev

Recommended Posts

What do folks make of this:

Mahoney:  “Angus is contracted to us and he is not going anywhere. Fremantle made it very clear there were some reports he was in Perth, but it was nothing to do with the Fremantle Football Club.”

Fremantle’s Peter Bell was equally as bemused, declaring he wasn’t keen to speculate on potential players the club could sign.

“Well he’s a contracted player for Melbourne. A very good player,” Bell said...“I’d prefer not to comment on other players that we are or aren’t interested in. I’m not going to speculate on Angus, he’s a contracted player.”

Brayshaw Rumours

Bell being didn't shut the conversation down.  Very coy.

Freo might be silly but they aren't silly enough to to pay up for Gus with a bad back, concussions, awful kicking and lack of leg speed that makes him pretty much without a position. His contract is untradeable and we have to do the best we can to salvage his career.

Burgess is going to have to work some magic to strip weight from him and get burst speed, agility and elite tackling in to his game in a hurry.

He is firmly in the Trengove zone.

Prove me wrong.

I wasn't aware of any back issues. Where was this written?

Much, much, much better player than Trengove, but there is certainly a downward trajectory based off a terrible year, but you could say that about most of the list and that would be foolish.

I presume ds meant the connection is injury causing a drop off. Tranners lost all pace and never got it back.

If he can't keep up then I'm not sure he is. Trengove could at least kick, although wasn't just slow but super slow.

My most concerning players of the season: Brayshaw (speed), T Mc (agility/confidence in marking), Hibberd (fitness/speed), Jetta (age/injury). A lot of the rest are down on form or just not as good in a poor side, but they are what they are and will either be boosted by talent around them or replaced.

By far and away the one player who I'm coming out of this season most worried about is Brayshaw. Everything about him this year - decision making with and without the ball, kicking, tackling/defensive pressure, even looping over the shoulder handballs to no one - was a mess.

i've had concerns on gus for some time - he's as slow as trengove, he can't dispose of the ball, and he jogs from contest to contest, looking completely disinterested far too regularly

if the offer was there from freo of pick 6 for brayshaw i'd be tempted to take it

Trengove couldn't find the ball though. Despite what people said at the time, and I loved Trenners too, he was a good decision maker and nice kick at his best, but was never going to make it because he couldn't find the ball at AFL level.

Ditto WW....sell highish while there's still a bit of 2018 / brownlow glow.  Another year like this we'll be lucky to get a stale pretzel and a gold coin donation.

He finds the ball for fun at VFL/SANFL level and average 20 touches his first 2 years, then it was Neeld ball - defensive as possible. I was disappointed he wasn't stronger at the clearances given his draft pedigree but I think he could've found plenty of it if it wasn't for his lack of speed. He didn't have a ruck like Gawn or team mate like Oliver either. Anyway, I'm hoping Brayshaw isn't another Trengove but I think it's telling there's no interest in him.

Freo have lost Neale and Hill and are wasting Fyfe's prime by not having good experienced mids alongside him. If they aren't even interested in making a token offer for Gus then I doubt anyone is.

A lack of speed has been consistently shown to have no effect on a player's ability to get enough of the ball if they're good enough. Sam Mitchell and Priddis were both slow, but used to win the ball for fun. It's all about positioning and game sense. Jack wasn't that good. Like Scully, a really disappointing 1-2 punch. Particularly as it's turned out Martin is a star.

I’m surprised at the claims of back issues. I mean seriously, if it has any merit to it, why did we continue playing him during a disaster of a season?

As for Brayshaw’s ability and career prospects, I don’t hold the doom and gloom fear like @DeeSpencer does. The bloke polled third in a Brownlow medal count ffs when the team was up and about.

I think it’s more than fair to assume the position of Gus being another by-product of a really poor year.

It’s pretty difficult to show your wares in a team sport when you’re surrounded by mediocrity.

Gus didn't have the best year in 2019 for a number of different reasons, 2018 we saw he's a very good young player with plenty of room still to grow so i'm backing him in.

the statements made today kinda hinted imo, that the Dockers expressed some interest but Melbourne told them he wouldn't come cheap and the dockers didn't feel they could realisitcally enter a discussion based on the asking price,

i don't believe Mahoney when he says the dockers aren't interested, the dockers know he's a very good young player, he's got family connections to this club and he's had an average year and may feel like he needs a change to get back to his best, so they'd be silly not to ask the question.

at least i hope that's what the case is, that we would expect significant compensation if he was to leave.

overwhelming preference is to keep him.

Would you really be surprised if Brayshaw had an injury and it was not handled well by MFC this year?

Don't reckon you can slam umpires in other posts and then put so much value on an award they judge in another.

So, he's a frontrunner then? "Polled third in the Brownlow" when we were playing well, but disappears when things are tough?

It would be a massive mistake to trade Gus, unless the deal was one that made us a far better team.

He is a very good player who had a poor year, as did like 40 of his teammates. There are wide spread reports that he's had back issues, and he was also played well out of position for most of the year. Nobody thought he was slow when he came 3rd in the Brownlow last year, because he was playing in his natural role as an inside mid, where he excels.

Unless he says I'm keen to go, I wouldn't even entertain a trade as neither Freo nor West Coast would have anything good to give us (that they would part with... I mean Gaff or Hill for Brayshaw sure, but lets get real!).

I understand we have a surplus of inside mids, but contested ball wins premierships. You can never have too many quality ball winners.

Gus unlike trengrove is not slow, he has speed, ask his coaches it is rather he  does not use his speed, he ran 2.8 in the 20 Meter sprint in the  draft combine, it is just not true that Oliver, Viney are slow, in Oliver's case he almost never runs the ball, he will kick or handball as soon as he gets it, he has been told to run with it and take just a little bit more time before kicking or handballing. Gus had A bad  back last preseason which is why he played on the wing a bit, you don't get many hits out on the wing, he could not do his 100 100 last preseason hopefully he can do his 100 100 and get back to  his 2018 form, he was one of the reasons we had a very good 2018, also a big reasons why 2019 was so poor.

NO. NO. NO. Tell Fremantle to take a flying jump. You do not get rid of a fan favourite like Gus. So he had a bad year, so what. He was not alone there. I believe he will be better next year, as will many other players. Keep the faith. Stuff Freo.

Excellent Jaded. We need to keep Gus. OK year in 19 but 3rd in 18 brownlow shows the kid can play. Plenty of rest then big preseason and he will be back to his best with Goody playing him in his rightful position. INSIDE CENTRE with Oliver.

Couple of thoughts:

* I'm sure Peter Bell is conscious Freo are courting his dad & don't want to be seen to be dragging their son thru the media

* His trade value will increase next year. Angus had a bad year as did others. We will clearly have a better 2020 without the 13 or so post season injuries and a better draw

* Keep for now

But i think its 1000-1.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
