AFL Hall of Fame Tonight

Featured Replies

This has had almost no media exposure.  Apparently 6-8 will be admitted to the HOF tonight.

Any likely Dees?

A quick search shows Neale Daniher is not in the HOF.  Could be wrong.

Would be a very, very worthy inductee:  Champion player, club captain, Grand Final runner-up coach.  Great champion of the very worthy MND cause.

Inspiration to so many.

Probably not a lot of people interested in who gets a Guernsey because our season has been so rank. It shouldnt come as a surprise that most MFC supporters dont really give a you-know- what when we are languishing near the bottom of the ladder (Again)

Everything AFL becomes more interesting when we all feel invested, because we are doing well.

We need to start winning again ....pronto.

Nothing personal LH.

Another year goes by where Garry Lyon is once again shafted.

the lack of promo for this evening indicates a fairly lowkey set of inductees, i suspect?

Hunter, Hardie and Barker all good inductees

Quite ironic Hardie and Malthouse being inducted in the same night. Hardie still holds a grudge

I was thrilled personally that the late, great Trevor Barker was on the list.

I coached the Cheltenham High Football team in the 70's and Trevor was in the team. No, he was not a star but a borderline selection week by week. He was a great kid nevertheless.

When I heard that Trevor was playing for St Kilda seconds after he left school I thought that was a fantastic effort, Little did I know he was to become a super star in his own right. So sad he passed away at the age of just 39.

Watching some Barker highlights I couldn't help comparing him with the also late, great Robbie Flower. They were both such spectacular fearless players.  What do others think?

I just saw that the worst Brownlow medallist of all time,  Brad Hardie was inducted.

[censored] me dead, he was 1/10th of the player G Lyon was.  What a joke the hall of Fame is.

Ron Evans gets in when all I can remember him doing was awarding the catering contract for AFL venues to his own company. He was Demetriou's mentor though.

Agree.

Staggering some of the names that have NOT been inducted when you cast your eye over some of the recent inducteees.

Malthouse looks more like Colonel Sanders these days

The bottom of the barrel has been well and truly scraped clean this year. At least the inclusion of Brad Hardie means that Brian Wilson is a sure thing next year.

How many of Melbourne's 1950s/60s premiership stars are still waiting on inclusion? Plus Garry Lyon should have been in a decade ago.

I agree Lyon should be in but the biggest problem with the HOF is the desire to put players more recently retired in over others who graced the game in years gone by. Hunter and Barker should have been in well before now

Should there be more inductees each year  IMO yes, I don't feel it would diminish the inductees. There's also the issue of spreading the inductees across the states and territories.

Several HOF members Tredrea, Matthew Lloyd, Gavin Brown, Brad Johnson, Matthew Scarlett, Michael O'Loughlin IMO are all behind Garry and outside of Johnson does winning a flag hold more weight, it shouldn't but seems to.

In terms of Brad Hardie whether you're to young to have seen him play, he was an absolute gun of a footballer with great skills. He played well over 100 games in the WAFL when it was at its absolute peak before crossing to Footscray. When Hardie played in the WAFL sides like South Fremantle, Swan Districts and Claremont would have matched any in the country.

Hardie broke into the South side at 16 and was unlucky not to play in their side which lost the grand final that season. He was a regular the following year kicking 3 in the Premiership win.

He was always a big game player winning 2 Simpson medals for BOG performances in State of Origin sides and also won 2 Tassie medals as the best WA player over the 2 state games in 2 seperate seasons. To win those medals he beat the likes of Glendining, Maurice Rioli, the Krakouer brothers, Brian Peake, Ken Hunter, Robert Wiley(who should also be in), Stephen Michael, Peter Bosustow, Wayne Blackwell, Leon Baker, Gary Buckenara, Mark Bairstow among others.

No mean feet and well deserved inductee. Sadly there are plenty of other Brad Hardies out there who aren't in and likely will be overlooked for more recent retirees

I don’t think Billy Brownless would agree with your view! ?

Different perspective; Billy Brownless does indeed think that Gary Lyon is a 'player'.

Not sure the hall of fame induction is based off playing ability alone, although you're not wrong re: Hardie.

Woey? Dipper? Libba? Agree that Hardie would be in the mix

At least he won it in his first year, kudos for that.

Trevor Barker and Brad Hardie? Come off it.

Hope you are not implying that Trevor Barker didn't deserve to be in the Hall of Fame? He was a champion footballer and fine young man.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
