I get your point, but as clubs say, we have to back ourselves to make him happy. We have to create an environment that he is happy. Carlton have shown themselves to be ruthless, both in what they are doing with Martin and what they did in taking Nick Stevens in the same circumstances.

I am not sure that you succeed in this world by being the nice guys.

The Bombers kept Daniher against his wishes. The Swans did the same with Papley.

Silvagni had the chance to do a fair deal and didn't, presumably to steal the player from the basket case, bottom club, that has just received AFL help.ย I am not sure the AFL would be happy if this is done to the Suns, especially by a side that has about 5 number one picks on their list already.ย

I think the AFL would be happier if we took him, so a bad precedent is not set.

Some on here want us to grow balls, now might be the time.

Jay Clark reported we are genuinely interested in Martin, but he is content in joining the blues still and could potentially refuse to speak to other clubs.

And that's his choice - but just like any draftee, he goes to whichever club selects him.

If he wants to behave like a free agent, he needs to earn that right through another contract with GCS.ย  If he wants to enter the draft he can:

a) Go to the club that selects him.

b) Play a couple of years in the local leagues, then try again.

ย

I'm not just saying this as a Melbourne supporter - it is akin to draft tampering to attempt to scare away other clubs.ย  The integrity of the draft depends upon honest engagement with the process.

If we are talking a shortage of cap space, what was the rush in re signing 30, 40 and 42?

Were they being chased by other clubs and are they in our best 22, no, so why the hurry?

I would estimate those combined salaries at least at $600-750 k this year. We also had room for Elliott so clearly we have more space.

I can't believe it is a salary issue, it will be Martin's preference being the issue.

So do we convince him or his Manager that his future is with us and if unsuccessful,ย take him anyway and try and make him happy then?

Once he nominates he is fair game. He knows that. We do not have to tell him or anyone else of our intentions. If he is overseas and we feel obligated announce our intentions we would then let his manager know we are interested without committing because we may change our mind. If he adds much needed depth then why not.

If the football department want him and we can afford him its negligent and soft not to draft him.ย

I do not think we would tell him or his manager as it would be all over the news in minutes.

If he specifically wants to avoid the MFC at all costs then he would nominate for the National Draft and take his chances. Carlton could split their pick 9 or trade up to a better thanย  their nextย  pick at 40.. A challenge for the foot in mouth blues.

Clubs screw each other all the time especially the strong clubs. Carlton tried to screw the GC banking on a back down and it backfired making them look like fools.

Do we bother?ย  If he wants to join Carlton, would we select him and potentially put up with him sooking through the entirety of his contract?

Actually, stuff him.ย  If we can afford him then I'd select him.ย  Stick it right up Carlton.

Once Martin nominates no club needs to convince him or his manager. He is putting himself up on the open market and will go to who drafts him. He is well aware of that and football is his chosen profession.. No different to kids getting drafted to an interstate club.

Any player these days who sooks and loses form won't get another contract.ย

Otherwise its New Start.ย

I wonder if we can get some upgraded picks if we don't want to take him?

We can't just give Carlton a free hit...

Pick 9 would be overs but maybe they spit that with Geelong for 14 & 17 and give us one of those...

Give us something back and he's all yours...

43 for our 2020 3rd thanks

I heard theyโ€™re jetting over Juddyย just to make sure Martin willย come. Worked for them getting Shiel last time right?

Take him anyway and back ourselves in to get the best out of him, or don't take him because his attitude suggests he isn't the right type of player for our club, or any club. Its a tough decision. I would probably back ourselves in to take him (hopefully he can turn it around). We do need his type. Good fit.

Hopefully the club puts out a statement sooner rather than later declaring our intentions, just so we don't have 250 pages on this thread.

I highly doubt we'll be interested in picking up a high priced inconsistent player.

He and his managementย can refuse to talk to us all they want, once he's in the draft he's fair game. We have to be ruthless, not only will we improve our list, it will stopย Carlton gettingย a freebie.ย ย

Didnโ€™t Luke Ball do just that to get to Collingwood? Ball should have been charged by the AFL at the time but they looked the other way. SEN talked to his manager this afternoon and he said MFC had already been in contact but Martin wants Carlton. He will put a ridiculous price on his head to scare us away but doesnโ€™t that mean Carlton has to pay that price?ย

I can see it already. We pass on him and Blues grab him. He kicks the winning goal against us, putting us out of the 8 by one game and missing finals.

Don't say MFCSS is dead.ย

Indeed it does, but like Luke ball he could putย a price of 1 million for 1 year, and have a hand shake to play for 400 the next 2ย

I think I read somewhere that whatever he nominates has to be included in the salary cap. Can someone confirm that?

Also that seems like a crazy and totally unethical system that basically is draft tampering. If you nominate a price on your head it shouldnโ€™t be allowed to change club to club.ย

We should be careful not to tip Our hand too early, particularly when it comes to cap space. Weโ€™ve confirmed our interest, hopefully May and KK have good relationships with him from GC and they can make contact on our behalf and get the wheels in motion.ย

I wouldโ€™ve thought the AFL would feel really uneasy about a precedent being set with a player ditching a club before FA and basically manipulating the situation to get to a club, particularly as this guy has left GC.ย

Draft him.

ย

[censored] Carlton and their scheming p.o.s Silvagni.

I am not sure whaat MFC have in mind for the PSD or rookie draft but we only have 3 selections in the national draft. Stretch and JKH not offered contracts yet and may have to wait till all drafts. It would be unfair and most unlike MFC to delist players after the PSD.

This said I wouldn't go after martin. He wants big coin and I believe he would be competing for a spot with Melksham, Fritter and Hannan. His strength is his overhead making and he can kick goals. We need a small forward in the mould of Papley, Myers (at Geelong) or Rioli (the Cyril variety).

Draft what you need not because he is unexpectedly available or has potential. That is all Martin is a tease who hasn't played to his potential.

Seems to be a bit of contraditory info out there. All i know is we have a minimum two year contract, and camp A says it can't be front loaded and has to be x amount of dollars over 2 years and camp B says it can be something ridiculous like 1.5mil 1 year, 100k 2nd year.ย  Or even 2.4 million for 2 years, and then 200k/year in a new contract offer in 2021 for years 3 and 4

Apparently GC offered Martin + 15 for 9, but Carlton refused.

Thatโ€™s fair enough. ย Iโ€™d rather keep the top 10 pick

Does anyone else think if the GC Suns hadnโ€™t been gifted so many priority picks they would have actually traded Martin? Not many clubs let talented players leave without any compensation.

I don't think so.ย

The best offer Carlton made was their 2020 2nd (30+) and 3rd round(50+) picks.ย  An insult really.ย  Useless picks to GCS in 2020 as it is highly compromised.ย

Also, if Carlton made the same contract offer to Martin next year when he is an FA, GCS would get a first or mid first round pick eg 2/3 or 10 as an FA comp pick.ย  It is a similar situation with us and May last year - we had to give a higher trade than the market warranted because GCS would have had pick 2 this year as an FA comp pick.

I thought GCS's starting point of pick 9 and for 15 and Martin +/- bits and pieces, was reasonable.ย  Sydney may probably have taken 15 +/- bits and pieces for Papley.ย  Carlton tried to shaft GCS and missed out on both players.ย  They could also have had Butler with a late pick but missed out on him too because they were busy trying to shaft GCS and because their football manager and list manager publicly disagreed on whether they wanted him.

They may get Martin in the PSD by default but their trading reputation is shot.ย  Not sure players and their managers will be so quick to nominate them.ย  Destination club?ย  Doubt it!

GCS may lose Martin for zip but they have taken a stand against offers that are insulting ala Carlton's for Martin.ย  Good on them.

Iโ€™d absolutely love it if we leaked that to put Carlton at ease and flip on the day! ?

I feel like we have been in the position to get screwed so many times in the past, hell he got screwed by missing out on pick 2 this year, I want us to play a little bit of dirty pool. If it gets us to the top I couldnโ€™t give two ?!

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields.
