Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

In the end this is probably the sticking point. I'm not big on every Buckenara assessment but this was his thoughts prior to the trade finishing y'day...

..."Gold Coast want a first-round pick for Martin but he’s just not worth that based on exposed form. Yes he’s a talented player but he doesn’t work hard enough and has not translated that talent into consistent form at AFL level. To me, he’s worth Carlton’s pick 43. If the Suns get something better than that then they’ve actually done very well."

$500k (ish) max feels about right.

He has some very strange opinions on many different things, and opinions are like assholes....

We will get 1st dibs in the pre season draft if he nominates. GC will not be interested. Maybe we are not interested either.

If he nominates for the National Carlton have pick 9, 43, 57, 70 and 85. He may not last until pick 43. Can't see Carlton trying to split pick 9 before the draft.

Adelaide or Essendon  may have a nibble in the 30s' in the National.

I get that a free hit seems appealing but I tend to think he’s a bit too vanilla and the gushing is a bit too OTT.

We are pathetic if we are not up to our eyeballs in Martin. He brings exactly what we desire.

Upgrade on Stretch/JKH and we had the money ready for Jamie Elliott?? We would have the cap space surely?

Will be filthy if we let him slip through our fingers.. May and Kolo should of started a group chat with him at 7:30pm yesterday!!!!

Of he does indeed nominate for the PSD I expect that the club will at the very least talk to his management (if they haven't already). But I do expect him to turn it down and say he wants to be a Carlton player.

I doubt we will pick a player who publicly wants to play for someone else. But looking forward to hear rumours about him touring our facilities. That would build some real excitement before the draft

Worked out ok for Carlton when they took Nick Stevens.

Just take him and deal with the rest later. At the very worst we trade him to Carlton in 12 months and get something out of them they otherwise would have banked

Can psd picks be traded along with draft picks?

I don't think so, but worth asking

No they can't be traded.

We should be taking him with pick 2 in the PSD. Gold Coast won't take someone who has refused to sign a contract and walked out and moved to Victoria.

If he is set on Carlton, then we hold them over a barrel and make them compensate us for not taking him ahead of them. We are in a win-win situation here. We either land a good footballer who fits our needs for no trade cost, or we negotiate compensation with Carlton for not taking him.

If the club doesn't stand firm and make the most of an advantageous position, then nothing has changed and we're still a weak feeder club. Surely we've grown some balls now?!

Can we do that?

By the by 'grown some balls' and other [censored] related metaphors seems to this years's trade period bent over.

AFL site claiming Carlton have pick 3 in the PSD??

Third last paragraph.

http://Carlton has missed landing Sydney's Tom Papley and Gold Coast's Jack Martin on a frantic final day of trading

Previous trade deals are for the ND not PSD.

Carlton could be set to grab him if GCS and MFC do not.

We should do a favourable pick swap with Blues to agree to pass. Our future 2nd (from Freo) and current 4th for their future 1st.

The only sticking point may be money, LT.  If he puts a high price on his head then we may not be able to match it, or feel as though it will hinder our ability to sign up some of our key players next year.

Make no mistake - I'd love him at the club, and I would be happy for us to bluff Carlton a little to make them sweat, but if he puts a big bounty on his head then we may have no choice but to pass on him as we can't afford his salary.

Maybe, but we don't really know.  Does the club see a target next year that they can use the money on, or are they keen to pocket the cash and use it for contracts over the next few seasons?

Our priorities will dictate whether or not we chase Jack Martin.

If we can't afford him financially, then we're in real strife. A team that finished 17th should not have salary cap issues.

It's a win-win situation. Get a good player, or get compensated for letting him slide to Carlton. We improve either way if we play hardball and are smart about it. Time to see what Mahoney and co are made of.

We need to look at the bigger picture.

I can't recall who they are, but I believe we have a number of important players out of contract next year.  The club may see the money we were going to use on Elliott, and anything left over, as important in achieving our goals of who we are going to re-sign.  If we don't pursue him for financial reasons then there would be far more to it than just not being able to afford him now, but also looking to what we need to do in the future.

A team that finished 4th a year ago easily could. It's obvious we've got money tied up in our backline and in the midfield - especially with 2 expensive wingers bought in and Petracca, Harmes, Viney all out of contract. Then Fritsch out of contract as a forward.

We targeted Elliott and my guess is it was for about 600k. Martin was rumoured to be offered 700k for Carlton and if he heads to the PSD they'll look to ward off other interests by structuring that to make it uncomfortable. Should be able to make room for him but it might be the kind of deal that puts us in salary cap trouble next year and then we have to ship out a good player cheaply like the Pies/GWS have done.

How exactly do we get compensated by Carlton for letting him slide? A one sided trade of draft picks on draft night maybe? But the AFL might not be too happy about that. I'm not even sure it's allowed.

I wonder if we can get some upgraded picks if we don't want to take him?

We can't just give Carlton a free hit...

Pick 9 would be overs but maybe they spit that with Geelong for 14 & 17 and give us one of those...

Give us something back and he's all yours...

According to his manager, Melbourne cannot fit him in their salary cap.

There is no way to take him unless others took a pay cut.

well we could fit elliot into our cap supposedly

that must mean martin wants a lot more than elliot.....in which case he must be overpricing himself

I'm all for taking Martin in the PSD if that option is available, but he's not as good as this thread suggests. He is a largely untapped potential talent. The sort of player who, if we had drafted, would cop it left right and centre on Demonland. So I'm quite surprised everyone is fawning over him as much as they are.

My gut tells me he will set a price that we either cannot afford, or are not prepared to pay, and that will allow him to get to Carlton at pick 3 in the PSD.

Context.

We finished 4th the year prior. Almost all of our best players were signed up in or after 2018, before the dumpster fire that was 2019.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
