Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Our interest in Martin is more strategic. We negotiate with Carlton to not take him in the psd and they agree to be creative with pick swaps now or down the track. Alternately, tbey agree to not pick certain players we nominate now or in the future so they fall through to us. Until that happens we chase Martin hard with a longer term deal with triggers and get Nev Jetta to meet and offer to mentor him

Can't trust them.

Yeah fair enough, I didn’t follow what Carlton were offering to closely. But it just seemed like a trade that should have been done easily enough and if GC didn’t have those extra picks they wouldn’t have been as fussy.

Your point is valid as part of the AFL assistance package GCS were given rights to their Academy players without using any draft picks.  This is as good as more first and second round draft picks for them so they wouldn't use Carlton's 2020 picks offered enabling them to reject the paltry offer they made for Martin.

there are always a handful of injuries (in our case under misson a sh*tload of injuries) at any point in time so there is always some flex for spots for talented players

l think this is draft tampering at the lower end of the scale and it happens all the time.

It wasn't the possibility of 'tampering' that I was highlighting.

It is that imv Carlton can simply not be trusted to keep their word.

Tell him that we will take him in the PSD if he nominates. Force him to talk to us or nominate for the ND.

If he nominates for the ND it's possible that a club like the Crows or Freo would pick him up without giving a [censored] where he wants to go.

Spots 38, 39 and 40 left

pick 3 = young (defender who can kick)

pick 8 = kemp (versatile mid or forward)

pick 97 = where’s Wylie (198cm Forward nurtured at the cattery)

pick 2 in PSD if there’s someone better than JKH = Martin even if he’s inconsistent

DFA if there’s someone better than Stretch = Murray has pace even if a dh

No kid reaches their potential at Gold Coast.  Not a single one has.

Melbourne is the perfect fit for for Jack Martin.   We have a brigade of big bodied mids to get the ball out to him and protect him.    Come on Mahoney, make it happen!

Interesting, I was thinking along the same lines.

Has his development been stifled at GCS?

Can he become the class player he was drafted as?

If so, ~$700K would be very easy to stomach.

Big question marks over martins commitment and consistency. He hasn’t be able to play at a consistent high level at GC when it should be easy to stand out.
plenty of talent but I doubt he’ll become a dedicated professional overnight. No wonder he wants to go to Carlton

I wonder if Collingwood, Richmond, Hawthorn or Essendon would do the gentlemanly thing and allow Carlton access to Martin, if they had the pick 2 in the PSD?

The above clubs plus Carlton all let luke ball go to the pies.

Take your point there.

I would also bypass Martin if he 100% doesn’t want to play for us.

But at the same time he’s not a free agent and therefore shouldn’t have the right to pick and choose which club he goes to. He hasn’t earnt that status yet.

Outside of Luke Ball, when was the last time a player went into a draft saying "I only want to play for Club A"???? Martin doesn't have that right now.

What Melbourne and GC do here could have a significant impact on drafting moving forward. If we pass on Martin, players nominating clubs in drafts could become far more prevalent.

I hope we utilise the next month to change Martin's mind, but if his wage demands fit in with our list management strategy going forward, I'd be drafting him anyway without question.

We have 2 ways to land Martin.

1) Convice him that we are a great fit for him, playing midfield as the handball receiver and swapping forward with Tracc.  Then he structures his contract in a way we can sign him.

2) Back all interest off and hope his manager and Carlton get complacent and don’t overly front load his contract. Then we quietly restructure existing players before pouncing on draft night.

I think we’ve tried option 1. Now it’s time for option 2. It’s going to require stealth and precision and still might not be possible.
