"Someone should tell Goodwin that Ryder is 12 centimetres shorter than Gawn and is 14-15 kilograms lighter. Oh, and there’s the small fact that he was playing with a fractured cheekbone.

Obviously Gawn and Melbourne couldn’t handle a few tiny midfielders in Karl Amon, Steven Motlop and 18-year-old first-year player Connor Rozee bumping him off the ball.

Port captain Tom Jonas also had his way with Gawn dropping him off the ball. Michael Christian, the AFL’s Match Review Officer, dealt with Jonas accordingly and fined him $2,000 for the incident.

Jonas has no regrets and said he would do it again.

Rather than whinging to the AFL on the back of a shock loss, Melbourne, Gawn and Goodwin should take a leaf out of Port’s book and step up.

There was nothing illegal about these tactics and it’s what has made our game great for so long.

The Demons need to take responsibility for their own performance or they could be waiting another 55 years to taste premiership success."

Cornes is more biased towards his Former club then any other media personality so take this with a grain of salt

This is an overreaction by Cornes. Expect another 55 year premiership drought because our coach sought clarification from the AFL...right

We all know Kane deliberately goes about trying to be the most hyperbolic media personality but he's not entirely wrong.

I didn't mind the tactic, Max should have been better and the midfielders needed to stand up for their man. That said, preventing the designated ruckman from reaching the ruck contest as they did 5 or 6 times is meant to be a free kick.

If there was nothing illegal about what they did, then Jonas wouldn't have got a fine, you absolute knucklehead.

I reckon he's right and wrong. its been an embarrassing week for the club all round. Goody did get outcoached. the only thing Cornes is wrong about is saying that Port did nothing illegal, which is not right, as you cant drop blokes off the ball like Jonas did, that's why he got fined 2k.

And now has stoopid platform on SEN's website. Which like 3aw and other stations put some articles upon their site masquerading as a real article, written by a real journalist.

Click bait, pure and simple and of no value.

Of even less value are 'articles' hat some underpaid flunkee knocks together summarising some stoopid opinion or view one of their presenters have banged on about. SEN'site is full of it. RSN have bucked the trend somewhat by hiring Matt Stewart (a real live journalist - and a good one at that - who the Hun saw fit to sack) to write articles about racing

What is frustrating is when one of these fluff pieces gets picked up by another media outlet and discussed. The opposite of a virtuous cycle.

Pyrrhic victory for Port, going too hard, too early.

We no longer play week to week...we play the long game now.

We stuff up at the start of the season. Port stuff up at the end.....

I didn’t realise the club was whinging. But if they were, I agree. Get on with it, concentrate on football and give it back twice as hard.

Cornsy  you jumped on   Ports   band wagon and are good at doing something like that to make up and be liked again by the bogans that follow them. Winging does not agree with our club however the dirty tactics when striking someone to the ground or running into them when not looking is a low act.

Jonas was better off getting his  $2000 worth  by striking Gawn to the stomach with a hard clench fist. These days you can hurt a player and be more likely fined.                                                                                                                                                                                                     No winging just frustrated with our performance and after round one too.  .Cornsy Please! don't jump on our band wagon again.

Oh! and Port haven't made finals

Stuff Cornes. There have been plenty of clubs that have received 'clarification' from the umpires over the years. Kane's only crying because it was his club we questioned.

Our blokes didnt give a whimper. Nothing at all wrong with what Cornes said.

You won't win a pressure final by betting knocked around by an 18yr old kid.

I look at the results of other high finishers from last year, and hope our pitiful performance was something to do with where we are in our training program, due to aiming at being at our peak for finals.

Hey Kane, did you write an article to criticize any of these?

Geelong coach Chris Scott seeks clarity on deliberate rule after tough calls in wet conditions – 2016

…While Longmire chastised the umpires' boss in their first phone call last Saturday after the round-two clash for not making the effort to meet him in Sydney before round one, both parties agreed the talks on Tuesday had ultimately proved productive – 2017

AFL umpiring boss Jeff Gieschen says Collingwood's blocking and sheparding tactics are entirely within the rules. ... Fremantle coach Mark Harvey said on Wednesday he would seek clarification from the umpiring department – 2010

WESTERN Bulldogs are expected to write to the AFL for clarification after ... Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson went through vision of umpiring – 2018

Eade this week called the whistleblowers to seek clarification on two free kicks ... and got some clarificationaround some rules can have a benefit – 2017

Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna will speak to the AFL umpires coach about what he perceives as roughhouse tactics used to curtail Gary Ablett – 2014

… In particular, Kane, what was your stand on the following request?

PORT Adelaide lead ruckman Patrick Ryder is being tested by new blocking tactics the Power wants clarified by the AFL umpiring ...  to get some clarification around a few rules,” said Port Adelaide forwards coach Brendon Lade - 2018

Look...we all know Cornes is a ........?

Cornedbeef:  Jonas has no regrets and said he would do it again.

If you wanted any further evidence that the penalty was too light.  I hope the AFL reads that.

Yes, and lets pass by on this. Cornes needs traction in the media and has developed this persona as differentiation. If we don't discuss him he's back to the fire brigade.

I can't stand Cornes, he is an absolute idiot of the highest order.

Which is why its so painful to say he is absolutely on the money here. For all our contested ball winning "bulls" not a single bloke flew the flag for Gawn and people here should be far more concerned with that than they currently are. It is simply disgraceful that we didn't fight back for Gawny, there really is no excuse.

Ugh, time for a shower.

Couldn't agree with Cornes more.

Shut your pie-hole Melbourne and let your actions do the talking.

It was disappointing that team mates didn’t back up Gawn on the field, but i don’t see asking clarification from Umpires as whinging.

You are a cheap footy Journalist Cane, what happened to your Fire Brigade Career?

Rubbed a few people up the wrong way?

Agree 100%

How on earth does a team supposedly overflowing with tough, hard at it types, allow their main weapon to be knocked around for an entire game, with not a single retaliatory action in his defence?

Maybe our so-called team of young bulls are still weaners?

  • GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

It's Game Day and the Demons are back on the road for their 3rd interstate game in 4 weeks as they face a fit and firing Crows at Adelaide Oval. With finals now out of our grasps what are you hoping from the Dees today?

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
