Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

FMD, rules committee should be renamed confusion committee. Still nominating a ruckman is so effing ridiculous and time wasting. Don’t mind that the ruckman can take possession at bounce and throw in’s, it’s the only thing they seem too have got right. Did they even look at the interpretation of the so called taking out of the legs, they’ve had plenty of examples of where it was paid when it shouldn’t have, eg. Brayshaw. Our game is fast, chaotic and tough to umpire, players make mistakes so do umpires, the basic rules I remember (a long time ago) playing under have been totally compromised with all the add on’s that have been created or should that be “upgraded”. Thank f...k I love our Demons, and I like footy’s new “chaotic” game, the players these days are super athletes, the confusion committee should go back too the basics.

I don't hate any of the rule changes per se, I just hate having to learn new rules every year. It makes me feel very sorry for the umpires, especially when there are a few changes in there that are ripe for making judgement errors.

Ho hum. I'd love to know where the AFL are getting their intel that the fans want the rules changed in order to make the game more interesting or whatever. I'm in my mid 30s and have seen the style of the game change heaps over time, including the Terry Wallace flood and the Paul Roos turn everything in to a scrap being in vogue, and I've never had my interest in the game affected by it. The main thing that affects my interest level is how the Dees are going.

The hands in the back rule is going - we'll be back where we started with just a push in the back. Was unnecessary and confusing when it was brought in and no doubt confusing again when removed

I'm predicting a disaster for umpiring interpretation, if Steve's explanation is anything to go by

I can't believe they left the ruck rules the same. everyone  knows how to fix it, and probably one of the few that has almost complete consensus.....

also surprised the left interchange the same (I don't mind it but I am surprised.)

I'll bite mr know-it-all. How do you prevent players blocking the ruckman if no one nominates as a ruckman?

what?

2 players jump for the ball in the ruck contest. if  a third goes up. blow the whistle free kick.

that is the change I am suggesting, and the one I have heard everywhere  all year.

you don't agree?

it is not about blocking the ruckman. it is about 3rd man up.

it would be easy for the up to call an illegal shepherd or equivalent if someone is blocking he path of the ruckman obviously trying to jump for the ruck.

and if it is such a mystery, how do you block a ruck if you don't even know who  it is???

No nomination and again  Mr Brayshaw is not penalised for the mouse trap down at gheelong, I dislike the nominating. The rule was to stop the 3rd man up, "simplesness" penalise the fool who's infringing.

  • Where there is uncertainty over who is the designated ruckman, the ruckman for each team will still be required to nominate to the field umpire.

Presumably they mean uncertainty in the umpire's mind. So players will now have to read umpire's minds now in order to know they need to nominate.

Appalling they haven't fixed the contact below the knees rubbish.

The new 50m play-on rule sounds like madness.  The penalty is often too big already.  If the player receiving the 50m wants to get to his new mark quickly the main impediment is the speed of the umpire running backwards.  Will he be allowed to overtake the umpire? Will that be the moment he calls play-on?  Will the oppos running alongside the player getting the 50m have to stay 10 metres away I wonder?    Has the AFL thought out the details?

I think this rule change has been overlooked. It could be huge for us and anyone else with a tall, dominant ruck.

Gawn, who generally gets first hands on the ball, will be able to do a quick, clearing handball to our mids. He should be even more important next year. Preuss at 206cm could also be handy and Bradtke is same height (?).

This could inadvertently be the biggest of all the rule changes for us. I look forward to hearing training reports over the summer as to how they practice for this change

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
