Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Where has it been “widely reported that he has received long term offers of over a million dollars a season over the past few years”?

Source?

You keep stating assumption as fact. Just prefix everything you’re saying with “I’m totally guessing that ....” and then go for your life.

Don’t go applying for a job as a forensic detective anytime soon okay Patches!

I'd vouch for Patches, mate. His information is good. Might not be enough for you though, Drags.

Patches info came from something he remembers hearing on trade radio a year ago.

Hardly a verifiable source.

I just find it incredulous that some posters get potted for merely reporting on a rumour (Langdon, Nixon, ChookinP) while others get patted on the back for virtually posting their own rumours as facts. Often it’s the same people doing the potting as the opining! It’s really very hypocritical.

Alas, it’s a one eyed footy fan forum I suppose. What to do.

As you ask.

Mahoney states the intent of this trade period is to address the balance.

So .Intent....about balance.

An action is trading out a kpf.....trading in a kpb.

Pretty plain I'd have thought.

Sigh. Don’t know why I bother. But I’ll go again.

Of course every club wants to better balance their list. I asked how do you know the club think we are better balanced without hogan. It’s far more likely hogan wants to leave than the club initiated the potential trade

And as I said there are no other quality key fwds around to recruit.

Likely a lot more money as there is less competition for the Freo salary cap space

Even better for Jesse then! What is loyalty to the club worth these days? Sadly it seems not much for some players (across the league) - all boils down to business/commercial/financial interests for players and clubs which is rgw world of footy we now live in, like it or not. Always some exceptions to the rule (Viney, Jones etc). Just need some success so can become more of a destination and retention club.

We have a lot of talented players on our list who are also loyal and committed to Melbourne. Jesse is the exception, not the other way around.

I'm convinced you can't seriously sustain a proper culture that is built on mateship and trust (esprit de corps etc) and have a guy on your list who refuses to recommit beyond his current contract.

He's done at Melbourne and a trade should be found at all costs IMO.

We've stuck by him through everything and have put our arm around him in his time of need, but now we both need to go our separate ways.

Thank you for your service, Jesse, but we need to do what's best for us now.

Disagree. If he stays he's not the first to have a trade denied & go on to represent his club with distinction. Ryan O'Keefe is probably the poster boy for that. Denied a trade to his home state and ended up a premiership player (maybe a Norm Smith as well) with the Swans.

Absolutely, O'Keefe is a good example of someone who's gone the other way, but I reckon it makes a mockery of esprit de corps and if I were Goodwin I'd be deeply uncomfortable about this.

Rumour I heard was Freo offered Jesse 5 x $900,000. You don’t do that and offer pick 11 if any issues are serious surely? And I don’t believe they’ve just found anything out, they’ve been stalking him for years.

Would have been a "subject to medical" blah blah blah........

I reckon the AFL would be obliged to disclose if any players have issues that the governing body has in its code of conduct.

happy to be corrected.

Nixon, Langdon or 'Chook from Perth' hardly comprise the AFL community.

One an outcast the other a big mouth with little of substance to say, just a peg above Brad Hardy who should just about be on cue to open his mouth again.

I wouldn't give you "2 Bob" for the thoughts Nixon or Langdon.

'Chook' is a different story, a good poster with a record to match.

...but I'm not sure he was pointing his remarks at Jesse or certain people/culture within the Freo footy club. He was a bit cryptic as he should have been.

Chook was cryptic and any questions to him were censored by the mods, odd I thought. Just a question, he didn’t have to answer.

I'm not sure what you mean here, mate. We helped him during these issues and as far as I can determine, we would have continued to, but he wanted to go to WA.

How is me saying Jesse staying will make a mockery of our culture, related to the hardship Jesse has experienced?

Don't wanna be too precious about our culture.  What about the blokes we've just delisted or moved to other clubs? What about AVB who also almost went for family related reasons similar to Hoganminus the $? Does anyone here fear AVB won't put in in 2019?

If it's more than smoke and the reason Freo have withdrawn their offer it looks like Jesse stays and we make the most of the situation.

No point talking about what's not going to happen now or next year.

If it's a problem this year and that's what they're pointing to I can't see Jesse wanting to go there next year or at any time, they've burned him.

Looks like we've got him and what ever the issue is we will need to sort out, if there is one.

Pies did their due dilligence on Stevie J and subsequently pulled out of the trade based on the medical 2 years later Premiership and Norm Smith medallist, be nice for the same result

I don't rate AVB but he signed a three year deal. Jesse won't sign beyond 2019.

Hogan has already said upon signing his most recent contract, that if he was going to leave Melbourne, that was the time. Goodwin and the players have said just before trade period that there was no way Jesse was leaving, he loves Melbourne.

Which is why it was such a shock to us that he was contemplating a move. Now. When we just made a preliminary final, the club's first in 18 years. He's not invested and not on board. He was at Docklands a week ago for four hours getting assessed. Our success is not a priority for him.

I am not saying any of that.

But he had an awful year off field. It’s different to most cases. I have no problems with him taking time out to evaluate his life. I am sure he loves the MFC regardless

I'd like to point out that May is no choir boy either - there's risk in recruiting him.  He's not the guaranteed universal panacea.

I'm fine with the trade going ahead. But I'm at least equally fine with trying Jesse at CHB next year.  It worked for Hurley who had a similar chequered start at a key forward.

Out of interest, how are people thinking Hogan is even close to being a free agent next year?  He was taken in the 2012 mini-draft, but he didn't become a part of our list until a year later, at the end of 2013.  According to the AFL website " Players who are not in the top 25 per cent of salaries at their club (that is, in the club’s top nine-10 paid players) are eligible for unrestricted free agency if they have served at least eight years with the club."  That would mean that he isn't eligible for Restricted Free Agency until the end of the 2021 season.  That is only if he is not in the top 25% of earners at the club, which I highly doubt.  Assuming he IS in the top 25%, he would be a FA when his contract ends after that time.

So basically, as far as I can see he's not even close to any form of free agency, yet even some of the media talking heads think he's up next year.  Am I missing something here?

There is a miss conception by some on Demonland.  The preferred position by our FD is and has always been for JH to stay. Let me make this point with absolute and clear authority. I have been told directly.

The MFC is becoming a destination club. The FD is aware that doing the right thing by players...... even contracted stars to purse their own journey is required to becoming a destination club.

As I have said before, this situation only started because JH  in his end of season interview said he would not sign a contract extension over summer. He had yet to make a decision on whether he would move at the end of his contract.  The discussion went forward from this point. He has never requested a trade.

JH is happy to play for the Dees next season and is far from a certainty to ask to be traded next season. Talk that our FD preferred him to leave or thought we would have a more balanced team without him is utter and complete rubbish.

I cant say this strongly enough. It is a fact. Our FD is ecstatic that JH appears to be staying for 2019.  They are more than hopeful he will end up signing an extension. The FD are thinking this is his Dusty moment.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
