Redleg 42,168 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 Good player, universally liked and gave us his best in over 100 games. He was a great get. Thanks Bernie, enjoy retirement from playing AFL. 5 Quote
Jaded No More 68,976 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 Bless your cotton socks Bernie, you absolute legend! Thank you for picking us, when picking us was a hard choice. Thank you for giving it your all, for your leadership and guidance, for your dedication and hard work, and for being selfless in your pursuit to make us a better club. Also thank you for all the times you destroyed Dangerfield. 11 Quote
Slartibartfast 18,122 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 (edited) I don't warm to imports like I do "our own" but Bernie for some reason is so different. He came to us when we were on our knees in Roos first year and he gave his all. He won a B&F and was skilled and competitive on the field. He also has a wonderful generosity of spirit I think and a genuine love of life and fun. In the end he seems to have a wonderful sense of perspective in his life. It's time I know but I'll be very sad to see him go and wish him well in whatever he does from here on in. Many thanks Bernie, I think your football skill may have been underestimated but not your character. Cheers and good luck. Edited August 30, 2018 by Baghdad Bob 17 2 Quote

Deeoldfart 8,201 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 Bernie filled a gaping leadership and experience hole in our team at a critical time. He gave his everything to our Club, and played an important part in 'turning the ship around'. Hats off to him. He could easily have taken his pay and just cruised through a few seasons on talent and reputation alone, but he chose not to do that. He should be very proud of his contribution. 5 Quote
—coach— 3,496 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 (edited) Now who do we use to smash Sloan? Edit: wrote this before seeing news of the Sloan’s losing their baby. My condolences to them in what would be a very difficult time. Edited August 30, 2018 by —coach— Quote

Dappa Dan 2,188 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 I was a little critical when he came to the club. Loved him as a player at Crows, but didn't think he would be there when we play finals. Very shortsighted on my part, as he's been one of the big difference makers. Him, Lewis, Cross and other mature agers have had a huge impact on what we all see as a great list build. Well done Bernie, enjoy a well-earned rest, and well done MFC for a great recruitment. 4 Quote

Dr.D 1,771 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 good work Bernie. Was our best player in 2015! elite player at his best. Quote
Smokey 4,391 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 "The games gone past him. He's hopeless. Should not get a game." *retires* "What a shame! Thanks Bernie we love you! Get fit for the grand final!" Seriously though - Bernie made a choice to help this club in bad times and we should forever be appreciative of that. He was clearly slowling down this year and the end was upon him - but he gave this club the first sparks of hope we we arrived and I hope he sticks around the club. I'll miss him for sure. Cheers Bernie! Quote
Fatman Blues 30 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 Thanks Bernie - we wouldn't be where we are today without you - a great servant who showed our current generation what is required to be a top notch AFL player rather than a run of the mill AFL player Hope you stay on at the club in some capacity 1 Quote
Uncle Fester 2,848 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 Whatever happens now and in the future, he is one of the guys that we should always look back on as those that dragged us out of the mud. Thanks Bernie. You did us proud. 1 Quote

Let's hope you haven't played your last game and you get to lift the cup! That would be a fabulous fairy tale finish. A great guy, a great club man and a super footballer for us during some very dark days. One of my all time favs as he flew the flag when he could've sat back and just eaten the chocolates. Showed white line fever every time he ran out in the red & blue. IMHO he was the glue that held the team together during the dark days along with Chunk and Crossy Edited August 30, 2018 by Rusty Nails 3 1 Quote
Wiseblood 24,637 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 Will always love Bernie. Someone uploaded this years back but I've always loved it and, to me, sums up how quickly he fell in love with the club. 3 1 Quote

Jibroni 5,057 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 Such a sad way to end a fantastic career with the Dees, a lad from Country SA who has done himself proud. Only regret is that wont be fit enough to play in the grand final. Quote
Vagg 2,449 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 One of the true characters of the game! Very please he played 100 games for us. Really hope he sticks around in some capacity. Well done, and thanks, Bernie! Quote
