Played for ADFA and ANU - bloody coldest game ever was out at Cooma.

Ahh, interesting.

It was very noticeable at the ground how little support they had.  Their cheer squad basically took up the two rows directly behind the goal.  Other than that, nothing.  They really are The Spice Girls.

At least all their members will be guaranteed GF tickets if they ever make it. ?

(Probably scalp them though. ?)

Only took 3 minutes to get through their entire  Game Day thread and by the sound of it even Channel 7 Sydney gave up on the Giants.

• Hey all been out all day and just got home, can someone give me a quick idea of the game so far?

• Channel 7 must have realized the second half would be a blowout. Game was on main channel in Sydney for first half only.

• Yeah was seriously weird when a repeat of border security came on without warning.

To make matters worse, there were more stray Hare Krishna devotees there than GWS fans.

Tried to find a picture of the famous hired Orange Bananas who made up their original travelling cheer squad but perhaps this could be their new traveling uniform

Mind you the sad thing was that we lost the battle of the Orange Bananas and gave the GWS their first MCG win. Yesterday was enjoyable pay back.

There were more MCG  attendants In Orange than GWS supporters

It really is sad. The AFL has pumped so much money and so many draft picks into this club (and GC), at the expense of real clubs with real history and real supporters. Now this team is going to play finals, and I bet the Sydney v GWS game will have one of the lowest ever final attendances.

I actually felt a little sad for their players yesterday, when they kicked a goal and there was absolute deadly silence at the G. Then I remembered that they're a team made up of number 1 picks and turncoats, and stopped caring.

Plastic and irrelevant football team.

As opposed to the clubs steeped in rich history like the “West Coast Eagles” or the “Adelaide Crows”. Or the old and super-relevant St Kilda or North Melbourne.

All the clubs were manufactured at some point. I honestly don’t see why GWS or GC are any more offensive than any of the other clubs that were invented from thin air, or are old but have stuff all supporters.

The AFL stuffed up the opportunity in Canberra.  Most of the city was originally from Melbourne and therefore footy-mad.  But they let the Raiders capture the market and by the time they got around to creating GWS, AFL was a minority interest in the ACT.  I think it may be too late to relocate GWS to Canberra even though they have more enthusiastic supporters there.  The population is too small.

Edit to add:  ACT population is ~400,00.  Although Melbourne with a 4M population and 10 teams has a similar number of potential supporters per club, almost everyone in Melb has to at least pretend to have an interest in AFL. Whereas in Canberra most will 'support' the Raiders or Brumbies, so the effective AFL population is more like 100,000.

How can you not see the difference? West Coast and Adelaide had local teams and a well established competition in their relevant states. They immediately picked up a lot of support. West Coast is the richest and one of the best supported clubs in the AFL. Adelaide not far behind.

There is no state interest in football in either NSW or QLD. FFS both of these states have recently had serious success, QLD had one of the greatest team in history and yet still nobody cared. The solution to add yet another team that nobody cared about in those states, was purely about TV money for the AFL.

You can't tell me that if they established a team in Tassie, it wouldn't have more supporters than both GC and GWS combined in the first season.

It’s a bit out of focus but it’s the best I could do with what I had at my disposal to take pictures.

The AFL would be embarrassed to have this club playing in a final on the MCG.

So assuming away fans generally pay for tickets, with a half decent crowd for this game, would we have made any money on the match? If the crowd was mainly Melbourne members all we'd get is the food and bev turnover (???), and I've been told at some point the beer ran out.

Huh?! There actually is a GWS fan forum?

Ha Ha, on big footy yes, seems more like a communal forum though. Most posts on their 6 page ‘ autopsy’ thread came from a Dockers and a Crows fan.

Western Sydney should not have been considered for expansion ahead of a Tasmanian team. My other point is that we have too many teams already, we  don't have the talent to cover 18 teams.

To think the AFL gave the chop to Fitzroy and South Melbourne and brought GWS and the Suns who no one cares about.

And of course Tassie doesn't even get thought about.

Because they took all the draft picks we should have got and stole $cully! They are irrelevant in Sydney where everyone follows rugby and they didn’t need another AFL team. Just like Queensland needed the Gold Coast Scums. Another great idea from the AFL who think we can promote AFL in China!! LOL.

A Tassie team would have real passion

Absolutely, and be great, well-rehearsed gentlemen and ladies, open to criticism, win-loss aspects of the game, the longer-term good of the game and a happy, accepting nature when travelling interstate for matches. They might even bring some excellent cheese to share with Dees' supporters to enjoy at half-time with a glass or two of fine cold-climate white. We must encourage this, from the Apple Isle, as mark of disrespect to Whoreform's efforts with these lovely people, establishing a bond and deep friendship within the hallowed turf of the MCG/MFC/MCC. All good. Hey, I reckon Russell Robertson would be in it, too.

Melbourne has a population of 5 Million

reached that figure today!!

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
