Not usually in the camp of blaming the umpires, but Nicholls was frustrating me this arvo to the point of kicking seats at the G.

He’d either:

1. Allow a non officiating umpire to call a free our way

2. Deem the contest halved, even if he’d just paid a free to them for the same thing

3. Give them a free, even if we’d done enough to win the free once or twice over before he could ping us third time up.

We’ll never get a fair result with him at the helm.

To be honest I thought umpire 26 was the one who killed us. I don't think he paid us a free all day.

I wasn’t wrapped, but more frustrated with how we let the game slip., sides who win the ball win the free kick count. Buddy had a few frees they didn’t pay.

He's the worst umpire in my lifetime. He's either a cheat or incompetent. Either way he has to go.

Does anyone have the stats for games he's umpired against us? I don't think we've ever had a positive free kick count in a match he's officiated.

If anyone knows how to lodge formal complaints against umpires, let's get the ball rolling.

If anyone knows where he lives, PM me.

You people all are joking. Can't blame the Umpires. Try blaming those insipid blokes that wore our jumpers today. They were the one's that lost us the game not the Umpires.

I actually thought they were ok today and I'm no Nicholls fan.  Can only blame the blokes in pink and blue for todays result.

Give up blaming the umpires... plenty of frees on Sydney not paid also

If Hogan kicks like a full forward we win, similarly if Spargo kicks like a goal sneak we win

Not good enough at the basics from guys who should do better

Nicholls is deadset useless. I'm 100% serious that action needs to be taken to ensure he stops ruining games of football.

I'm not blaming him for our loss. We kicked ourselves out of the game.

However, the public have the right view games of football that are officiated impartially and correctly. He needs to go for the good of the game.

We lost because we played like crap, but this ugly bald headed turd needs to be banned for ever umpiring again. Either he is blind or he’s a cheat. Still sooking about Gawn hitting the ball away from him. Precious little darling.

No good having the Eight decided before there are three Rounds still to go.

The Umpires are still deciding who wins and who doesn't. The scene was taylor made to use the bad kicking as the excuse for MFC to lose and low and behold........

Stopped watching after half time, just knew what was going to happen. Commentators knew, umpires constructed and Sinners did the rest in dedication......

We just have to wait our turn. They (media) will waffle their way through to a great ending to the year. Ahh, the mystery, the intrigue, who would have thought TWSNBN would have made it, and cats from the abyss. Give us a break. Umpire lackeys of the worst kind......

Should Bugg (particularly) or Kent have played? maybe

There must be stats available somewhere as to which umpires give how many frees to which clubs, and at which grounds.

Presumably the AFL have these data but are too embarrassed to let them see the light of day.

That nom paid deliberate out of bounds in the firest quarter was an absolute discrace.  I think it was Port Adelaide we got paid one against that was a quarter as deliberate as that.

The umpires almost love Sydney as much as the Ch 7 comentators.

Some of the umpiring was atrocious today, which is becoming a running theme in 2018 (but hey, let's double the size of the goalsquare because that's what fans want!).

Had no impact on the game's result, but frustrates me.

A Sydney player handballed it out of a tackle directly over the line but wasn't paid deliberate. A Sydney player takes on two Melbourne players, tackled, drops the ball, but no holding the ball call. Brayshaw's head is nearly taken off but no free. I'm sure there were some bad decisions the other way, too - I only remember the ones against us. It's just frustrating to see so many poor decisions on a near-weekly basis.

He is awful but not his worst today.

He has no feel for the game.

Nicholls is lower than crocodile [censored]. He is an absolute self centred [censored].

Agree on the state of umpiring this year 'titan'...so frustrating.

I'm not a Nichols fan at all but funny listening post game on the radio to a Swans supporter complaining about the same umpire saying he never gives them a thing.

I just think he's a rubbish umpire, an opinion that is reinforced when I'm watching a non Melbourne game as a neutral.

There was a lot let go tonight, at times on both sides although the third quarter really felt in the Swans favour. There were some downright puzzling ones where we would lay perfect tackles and not be rewarded while our guys would get zero time to get rid of it or would have their heads taken off and get pinged for HTB.

Not the worst I've seen but it wasn't great, and yes Nicholls was the worst of them.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

  • POSTGAME: Port Adelaide

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
