Casey Demons v Geelong VFL

Is it me or does it feel like the game plan in both MFC and Casey’s both lack structure. We cannot got from beating sides last year to looking horrendous with the ball this year. I believe the coaches have changed something and it hasn’t worked. Or did we over achieve last year?

Good news is Jack Hutchins the skipper will be playing local footy this weekend with Caseys Bye and should be back for the next game

How the [censored] can the VFL still have a bye in their fixture?  This just robs players the opportunity to work other game, especially those that have been dropped, or those really trying to push in to the senior team.

The sooner they scrap the competition and/or introduce a true AFL reserves the better.

Ball movement and skills CONTINUE through be our MAJOR problem. It is obvious at Casey and MFC.

We need a few more highly skilled mids.

It’s disappointing that our depth appears so shallow

and if you cannot get your better players on the park only highlights the problem.

whatablunder last year bringing Viney back so early then only to lose to Collingwood. A pity Vanders is so far off and might be forever off.

If our lower level players cannot dominate or play well at vfl level they may as well play at Boronia or Echuca. No point in keeping them. Put up or pass off.

I do hope to see a flag one day will make the supporting for decades almost bearable. But hurry up demons !

dont like Etihad  will be watching on the Telstra app on the phone. Only decent thing about the phone contract.

Only way to fix the mess the afl created is merge Stk/NM plus bris/Gold Coast. Too many teams, not enough talent and GWS have been fed while lowly teams bottomed out.

they say the population is growing but country footy is stuffed in many states, tas is a good example. Maybe more kids are switching to soccer. Many leagues and associations at country level are amalgamating

It will be magnified even more when the new AFLW teams come in next year.  The quality of that league will significantly drop because the better players are getting spread further and further.  It will eventually work - the AFL are too proud for it not to work, but it's going to take a lot longer than what it should.

With regards to the Geelong VFL team - I'm continually amazed, but at the same time delighted and amused, at Scott's refusal to play Zac Smith in the senior team, and continues to play Stanley.

I don’t rate either Scott especially Chris but I’d happily have his W/L record at the dees

I was there watching the game last night thinking the same thing that there is no structure, it was just like watching a Melbourne game. I ended up leaving at half time because I knew the game was over.

JKH has been a major disappointment.. last year he was a ball magnet and was dominating at VFL level.  Now he can barely get a touch.

Tim Smith is interesting.. named on the extended bench and then goes out and gets BOG. Will surely come into consideration next week .

There are a few on the list now that probably know their AFL dream is over and are just going through the motions.

JKH is one of them.

They could take a lesson from the 2 former skippers, Grimes and Trengove who kept racking up possessions even though they didn't get the reward at the selection table.

Tim Smith is really giving it his best shot and good on him for that...I hope he gets a call up and can play that forward/mid role. He would have been a good replacement for Trac if the timing was better.

And yet the last two premierships have been won by teams that have struggled since the expansion teams entered the comp, whilst the well-fed GWS hasn’t won anything.  Talent and the draft in particular, is overrated.

no actually some clubs get it right, rare but we should be striving to achieve this as so far we only picked 1 decent player in that draft who is Clayton Oliver

Which clubs get the draft right?

Every club strives to achieve this, but like Redleg said, it’d be a miracle to actually achieve this.  Complaining about the drafting of Dion Johnstone at pick 64 is a stretch.

No logic, itis not comprehened

Only over emotive posts from those who didn't actually attend the game

Great, get the structures right with a lineup that has changed 3 weeks on the trot

Unfortunately, even from training I think JKH and Johnstone are done

Other players are just not in form, it happens

A trained monkey would have the same w/l record as Chris if they too were given the Geelong job.

You only need to ask what their supporters think of his ability as a coach. I personally hope he stays in charge for many years to come. A lot like Buckley at Collingwood actually.

It's called playing your role Saty. The players all talk about how they just want to play their role in the team. For many of them it's all talk, as when they are required to step up and play a role, they dont.

I don't watch pressers of players or coaches. They roll out the typical B.S. that tells us nothing at all. All due respect to your training reports, I take them with a grain of salt too (the ones where you are passing on "news" from "the horses mouth").

Compared to who ?

Name the clubs with greater depth and list the players you like who can't get in their best 22.

Compared to what was expected of players before the jlt series,

guys who get dropped should be in the best for Casey but rarely are.

we seem to be moving deck chairs on the titanic

So you mean either players are out of form, or your expectations haven't been met ?

So we have Tim Smith who is a mature age forward playing in the midfield where the game 'starts', agreed he gave it a real crack.

We have depth, but at the moment it is at either end of the ground, with small to medium fwds and tall backs, we are missing a ruck and midfielders and unfortunately due to circumstances a tall marking forward of AFL standard to play alongside Pedo

Thankfully Weid has taken the step up, but it leaves a hole

The VFL players try and some like Scott are getting better due the exposure they are getting because of the situation, but it all takes time

Of course you could move Keilty fwd but that leaves a gap at the back

You want to try your hand at coaching at VFL or AFL level with the cattle you have on hand on any given game day

I actually do speak to the players and others, as I have said before, I choose what to pass on if given permission

Well lets examine your argument.

In 2015 we took Oliver at 4, happy there.

Weideman at 9, could be a good player in the next few years, we will see.

King at 46 a developing ruckman and showing good signs.

Hulett at 49 a bust.

So in 4 picks we have a star, a possible key forward who is in our 22 atm,. a developing ruckman, who you surely accept at 20-21 wouldn't push the best ruckman in the the AFL out of the team and the type of player we need another ruckman/forward, remembering Spence is gone and Pedo is now 32 and one  bust.

That is actually good recruiting. 75% possible players including a star.

If a club took 5 players in the draft every year for 4 years how many do you think would be regular 22?

Most likely a club would think it brilliant if 8 players from the group were in the 22. That is highly unlikely though, but if it was, it is a 40% return.

Now tell me how we stuffed up Clayton's year and don't use hindsight to pick the eyes out of the draft and remember our last 2 picks were 46 and 49.

Saty as a friend, could I suggest you leave the last line out of your posts. It is the line that constantly riles so many on here and starts the petty arguments and the rest of your post is informative and sensible.

I don't like seeing you attacked on here, as you are a nice bloke, a great Dees supporter and you attend training and pass on info which most of us love to read, just go easy on that last line it is irksome to many.

PS. I see I got in one post too late as it has started again.

Draft wise.. I would be happy with an average of 1.75 best 25 players a year. Add in one trade per year and in theory the list is turning over completely every 10 years. We have suffered badly in the home grown over 25 year old brigade. Jones and now T Mac are the only ones who spring to mind. Of course that is reflective of bad/unfortunate drafting 7-8 years ago.

As Redleg points out we are well within the norm for recent years. The statistics for who makes it at AFL level are very demoralising for the youngsters. Go and have a look at some of the AFLPA stats for more in this area.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
