OUR BEST 22

WERRIDEE

Recommended Posts

Viney says we don't know our best 22 yet so I'll give it a stab.

B: LEVER, O.MCDONALD, JETTA

HB: HIBBERD, T.MCDONALD, HUNT

C : PETRACCA, OLIVER, JONES

HF: KENT, HOGAN, MELKSHAM

F: GARLETT, WEIDEMAN, PEDERSEN

FOLL: GAWN, TYSON, VINEY

IC: BRAYSHAW, SALEM, FRITSCH, SPARGO

Jumping the gun a bit with Spargo considering he hasn't played a game yet but I just can't bring myself to put in Vince, Lewis or Wagner in considering their form.

Thoughts?

Starting to feel of this team as I do looking back at the 2010-2011 team. Full of potential but in hindsight, just maybe not that good (yet).

Anyway here is mine.

B: SALEM, O.MCDONALD, JETTA

HB: HIBBERD, LEVER, HUNT

C : PETRACCA, OLIVER, JONES

HF: KENT, HOGAN, MELKSHAM

F: GARLETT, T MCDONALD, PEDERSEN

FOLL: GAWN, TYSON, VINEY

IC: BRAYSHAW, WEIDEMAN, FRITSCH, HANNAN

Big omissions: Vince, Lewis, ANB

Might be a tad tall/slow. I think you will get quite a bit of support around Vince and Lewis not being in the same side, both have performed well below their skillset. I still think Goodwin plays one each week, but days could be numbered for both unless both reverse form ASAP.

I don't have anything to offer for best 22 other than if we drop the Essendon game, we need to start getting games into players like Baker, Fritsch, Spargo to see how they handle it.

It's still early, but if we can't beat Essendon we are not going to be top 8 material, and need to access the kids on the list.

The only certainties for me are:

FB:  Jetta.   OMac.    Lever

HB:  Hibberd.  ???     ???

Cen:   ????        Oliver.      ???

HF:    ???     Hogan.   Petracca

FF:   ???     TMac.    ???

Ruck: Gawn, Jones, Viney

Just pick whoever is fit/in form for the rest as they are far to unpredictable.

Im positive on the Weid being a lock from next year so hopefully T Mac will go back to CHB and our spine will be set for the next 6-8 years.

We dont have a best 22

I think we have a best 19 with Pedersen and Kent out of favour a lot of the time and Fritsch yet to prove himself and the 22nd player is anyone's guess.

I do it, by not hovering my cursor over it and not pressing the button.

In all seriousness, I don't think there is an automated way of doing so. The ignore person one is magnificent however.

Good thread.

It'll always be in a state of flux.

As I’ve said countless times, inside mids playing stop gap roles, (ANB and Tyson) is not an answer going forward.

These guys might be playing there now, but over the next couple of years, our core will stay the same and we’ll keep adding jigsaw pieces like we’ve done with Hibberd, Lever, Spargo and Fritsch etc.

Vince and Lewis were needed for experience and leadership, but their positions will be up for grabs over the next year or so.

I’d rather outline the core of a 22 and leave some positions open that will be filled over the next two to three seasons.

B          Jetta          O Mac

HB       Hibberd      Lever        Salem

C           Hunt           Viney

HF        Spargo       Hogan

FF        Garlett     Weideman    Petracca

FOLL    Gawn         Oliver        Brayshaw

INT       T - Mac     Jones

Obvs there are a lot of gaps with many players vying for spots.

Melksham, Fritsch, ANB and Hannan are all jostling for that half forward role. None of them have announced themselves though, with only Fritsch being the one that excites me most. I also think he has the potential to play wing depending on his running capacity going forward.

I believe that over the next year or so we need to target a player who is suited to a wing. A hard running skilled player. I’ve put Hunt on one wing for speed. We need more running power and players who can genuinely break games open with their run as our midfield is very one-paced and we’ve been cut up by teams through that area of the ground on many occasions.

I’ve left Vince and Lewis out of the side. Their form is now on the decline and so that back pocket position is up for grabs and I’d love to get another defender in the mould of Lewis/Vince, just a younger version.

It’s easy to forget how young our core is and is a major reason why we’re still so up and down. The impatience comes from so many past rebuilds like this and I’m guilty of being impatient and wanting results now.

But if you look at this group: O-Mac, Lever, Salem, Hunt, Viney, Petracca, Brayshaw, Oliver, Hogan and Weideman. 10 players who are all in a similar age bracket, half haven’t hit 50 games and none have hit 100. Think about that for a minute. That’s genuinely scary. Especially given that there are some keen media people who had us finishinb top four this year.

There are bookends in that group and a bunch of midfielders. It’s clear that the clubs blueprint is to keep this group together for as long as possible and build around them. Once they hit 100 games we’ll start to see more consistency in our performances. And from there, anything is possible as long as we’re smart with our trading and drafting.

Building a strong club has to start with a young core group that come through together. We’re not as fortunate as other clubs in the leadership department so our leaders will be born from this group. Viney already standing out as the one who is going to drag us along.

I can be negative about our club and usually am. But when I think about where we’re ‘actually’ at rather than we’re the media predict or think we ‘should’ be, I get excited. Patience is the last word I want to hear as a suffering MFC supporter. But it’s clearly needed when looking at our list in this light.

Happy Friday, go Dees.

No such thing as a best 22.

It depends on who you are playing, who is available, who is in form, the deck you are playing on and even the weather. It's rare to have all your players available and even rarer to have them all in form.

Like this one heaps! It would be nice to include Frosty on the bench, and Harmes as well but there just is not the room. Spargo, Fritz, Brayshaw, Salem provide some great interchanges but another tall would have been handy, perhaps. Wagner has some form and was settling at last - he would seem to be unlucky. Great to see Pedo in there, onfield, and maybe he could be an early rotation across a game and brought on for the match-winning last quarter.

I laugh that you can name a bench but still have gaps on the field.

Who are your emergencies?

Maybe mix it up.

For example you could do the best 22 from the 70's, or the best 22 of a team of players recruited to Melbourne or the bets 22 from our premierships or what about our best 22 of NQRs and delisted players since 2000 (so many to choose from!)?

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
