No the wisdom tooth issue came at completely the wrong time, when he still wasn't picked I asked, as above, he dropped a bit of form, so Casey to build it back

Not sure which bit you are not getting with Goodwin, if Gus' fitness was below the expected standard, he would be on bench at Casey or rehab group

As I said, "He's obviously match fit now (to at least get selected), but his two way running needs to get much much better.  One questions whether he's been doing all of the extras that some players do."

He's always at the rear during the preseason running sessions.

There's a reason Petracca is now running up the front and Brayshaw is bringing up the rear.  And it has to be application.

Maybe you just don't pay attention when you're at training.

Nothing beats match fitness.  He's now had runs in the JLT and a few at Casey, so I suspect it's at AFL level, but he's well behind the better runners at AFL level.

Guess we will find out this Sunday (if he replaces Tyson)

Yeah.  His percentage game time will be interesting.

Nothing builds fitness like sitting on a bench.

Gary Lyon is an all-time great of the MFC and he can errrr, say what he likes.

Sure but he he cant 'demand' the club does anythinG. He was also part of the cabal that nearly saw this club go under. Well intentioned but an unmitigated disaster.

he can stay well away from the club as far as I am concerned.

As I have bored people with before: we are not big enough to eat each other alive from past ills.

23 years of irrelevance, the near merger, the bubbling debt, the non-tanking verdict, the Neeld choice - they make up a rich tapestry of failure that we have all endured in the past and have stuck by the club.

If you are a Demon at heart you are welcome inside the house in my view.

And you can certainly query why a player isn’t selected...

Isn’t he friends with the Bradshaw families

I'm intrigued by how often he gets called Bradshaw. Seems a difficult typo to be made so systematically. Is it a weird autocorrect type thing? Surely nobody actually thinks that is his name?

Weird that "Bradshaw" would be a word common enough to be in anyone phone dictionary, but it does explain it.

Really frustrates me how my phone naturally goes to Bradshaw before Brayshaw.

Ah well anyway, I think Gus had a good pre-season but didn’t set the world on fire and probably lacked in the one percenters and hard two way running.

I’m really hopeful of him showing his true talents, plus he knows how to kick goals which will be good for this midfield/rotation thing we’ve got going on with Hogan/Petracca/Oliver.

I’d have had Brayshaw in the side over ANB, Melksham and Tyson for any of the rounds so far.

Cearly there’s something more than ‘form’ that we’re not privy to.

ANB and Melksham have been seriously underwhelming to date. And Tyson hasn’t been much better imo.

Yet none of them have been dropped.

Given the quality of the opposition last week, and the fact there's been only one match, there's not really enough VFL form to go on Steve. Tonight's match should be a better indicator.  Up till this week it is really only what the selectors have seen on the track, which isn't as strong an indicator at the end of the day.

It is absolutely rediculous that the VFL starts 3 weeks after the AFL.  Would hate to be a selector at the start of the season when injuries / poor form / general soreness kick in over the first 3 matches.

We will only really know where Stretch / Brayshaw / Balic  & Maynard are vs say Tyson / Melksham & Nibbler, when the former have had a decent run at it at AFL level and we have a body of work to compare.  Some will no doubt also throw in the Pedders v Weid debate as well.

In the mean time I'm happy with the word coming out of the FD that supposedly tells us they are only looking at 'in form' for 'out of form' options for the ins / outs each week, no doubt match ups / roles & the weather playing a significant part also.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
