I'm all for versatility, not only as team but as an individual, but I sincerely hope Goody is more strategic when shifting Hogan in to the guts, rather than him being part of the midfield rotations.

Good points .. just wondering if some see Hogan possibly developing into a Dustin Martin type player ie a tall strong bodied mid fielder who is very difficult to tackle

Though Hogan tries to play for frees too often he still need to master the art like Joel Selwood if he’s going to play in the midfield.

Whilst his chasing and pressuring when the ball hit the deck inside 50 hasn't been good his work rate getting up the ground has been exceptional since his first game. You don't kick 40 goals in your first season and be right up at the top of marks taken if you don't work bloody hard.

That said, a leap up CHF - no matter how good - is very predictable these days. You put a good key defender on them and allow other defenders to block the leading lanes and it limits their impact. Tex Walker might be the best - especially due to his precision kicking - and even he is a disappointing player at times. Jack Riewoldt is very handy but it's his work for the team - both work rate and defensively that gives him value not his possessions and goals. 

The really dangerous key forwards are either bigger (Brown, Daniher) or faster (Buddy) or exceptional at leading in confined spaces (Kennedy).

To have a reliable mark on the lead go in to the midfield you then open up a lot of opportunities with the ball. Say you've got the ball on a back flank - Gawn can get down the line for the long kick and Hogan can lead up the middle and either get used or draw attention. 

In case people haven't noticed our game plan is based around kicking and moving on angles and creating space. At our best we don't bomb it long nor do we madly run and carry. 

So I like Hogan in the midfield because it suits our game plan and I like him in the midfield to get him involved if the ball isn't coming to him. It's a win win if used properly.

Weideman is looking quicker at training and has bulked up noticeably.  They want to get games into him this year.  Hogan playing midfield minutes and Tom McDonald relieving in the ruck helps enable this.

By the fact that the AFL lists him at FF in the JLT  team list.  At least the MFC report doesn't bother to say where anyone is playing.

I like it.   If things dont go his way he can get a bit of a head drop and crack the [censored].  Keeping him engaged in the game more can only be a good thing

Adds to the team's unpredictability. Gives Hogan options should he be quiet at FF or the match ups suit Pedo, Tmac and/or Weid as kpfs. I like it a lot.

A fit and focused Hogan will tear apart most opponents regardless of being at FF, CHF or midfield.

I think it's pretty obvious that after an interrupted preseason he'll need a rich vein of form at Casey before he's promoted.  I expect him to move and look better in 2018.  I suspect his ankle, which has had off season surgery, inhibited his lateral movement.

Didn't he once kick 6 goals in a vfl game, and one other time everyone went nuts because he had 3 tackles in an afl game? That Should garuntee he plays every game  this year.

Weideman spent most if not all of training last Saturday away from the main group (he may have joined them since then) but he looked a long way off to me.

Hopefully the reason why Goody is thinking of having him through the midfield is that he's our second best pack mark behind Gawny and if he's in the ruck while Gawny rests, then the idea makes a fair degree of sense because he is naturally fit and fellow ruckman will not play close to him like a key defender who's aim is to push him under the ball and negate him.

As a result he could be a handy weapon - and a slight tangent on T-Mac's stint on the ball. T-Mac is more work horse.

But if the idea is for Hoges to play as a genuine midfielder, then it is fatally flawed because as good a mark as he is, he is among our worst disposers/decision makers with the football and we have a bevy of handy midfielders who are better suited to that hard grind.

My Brother was there on Wednesday and said he was participating in match simulation drills and looked impressive, especially his pace.

But I take little notice of people's views on training.  I saw Toumpas in a practice match one year and he was hopeless.  But he did kick 3 soft goals.  Later that day Demonlanders were talking him up based on that performance. 

Weideman hasn't looked agile enough to me with his lateral movement, but his ankle may have been impeding him.

Hope both you and Saty watched the game today and got an idea of his inability to have clean disposal. I'm not bagging everything about him - the guy is a freakish mark and has a freakish natural tank - especially for a smoker. And he is a great kick for goal from anything under 40m and he has a arrogant presence about him which we needed in the past.

But his kicking for goal from anything outside 40m is abysmal and have a look at his left foot stab early from the boundary in fourth term I think. He can't kick - he even had to handball to Hibberd when he was 45m out because he knew he was no guarantee of making the distance and he didn't want to embarrass himself.

Jesse, is like Jack Watts, he hasn't bought into what the coach wants him to do, although because he's young and we all know what he could become we excuse it. He's not soft like the highly-skilled Wattsy, but he doesn't spend time working hard at training and while I'm sure he will have some good days this year, he also will be found wanting through lack of work on his field kicking. 

If he applied himself to his game at training like his good mate Harmesy, then he'll become a superstar. But everything that i've seen from him, indicates he won't because he has a chip on his shoulder because he's a natural. Reminds me a little of Allen Jakovich a super, but wasted talent.

My favorite player for this role was roughie at the Hawks. Was a gun at being a team first player, with taps to advantage and blocks to allow the gun mids to do their thing.

When he did go back to the forward line, the mids loved getting him the goals and, he loved kicking them for the team. 

I think roughie was fairly selfless before this move, but I hope jesse will be moreso after his stints in there.
