If Watts had learned anything in 9 years it would have been to not answer a question like that.

Or answer it diplomatically "I'm excited by what Port can do and hope to help them win a flag" or some such drivel.

This is an interesting public statement by Jack Watts. In this morning's Adelaide Advertiser, to appease the Port supporters for press coverage, no doubt - which happens a great deal in Adelaide - Jack Watts' comments about Port being closer to a Premiership than Melbourne are back-page news (sports headlines). The article does not have much depth; however, it is fairly lengthy for items of this nature. Maybe, it is an attempt at controversy and/or incestuous local grandstanding. That Watts has fallen for this type of coverage is alarming for the mild-mannered, temperate opinions and feelings that he has expressed in the past in a 'red n blue' clown suit. I have been one of his most ardent supporters over the years and have seen him do things on the footy field that truly cut the mustard. At least he does not brag on this record nor does he make promises that 'he is going to be the difference' for the Port Adelaide side. He instead retains some modesty and draws upon the skills and reliability of some of the existing Port players (in the forward line where he will be utilised), and then refers to Port's 'strengthening' of an already impressive team that has just come forward via its 2017 draft recruitment outcomes. I really don't have an opinion on all of this but I thought it might be of interest to Demonland readers.

Is the sort of article publicity depts prepare and could be almost any player and any team. JW is obvious for Port as a proven publicity performer who did inspire personal supporter attraction.

As has been pointed out Ports recent record is better than Dees. While their record against top  sides I hardly think a last kick when in extra time is falling out of finals in a pejorative sense.

The interest of the season is if Hinkley can get the improvement needed by getting his disparate group of recruits to perform at their best when needed, and how he uses JW.

Will watch with interest and happy to get any other obscure reports detailed here for interest only.

Will continue scouring Dland for detail of our actions that lead to our improvement.

Hope we finish above Port (irrespective of how JW plays ) and all other sides.

Obviously just the 'ceremonial' article that has to come out every time a recognisable player changes clubs, can't see anything much to it although it does open up all kinds of cheap whipping for Watts - I think I'll go for the "what he means to say is, there are more players here who can carry me to a premiership".

But, this has all left me wondering, just philosophically, which is 'closer' to success?

a) a team featuring a significant collection of stars, but where many seem to have reached their limit.

b) a team featuring a significant collection of potential stars, some of whom will realise their potential and some who wont.

It gets a little more complicated doing the direct, real comparison of Port and Melbourne, since both teams made such important changes in the trade period.

What will Motlop and Watts do in a team already filled with 'mercurial' 'creative' 'inconsistent' players? Will Rockliff make a dramatic difference in their midfield or will it turn out his time at Brisbane was a bit like Moloney was back at Melbourne, having a excessive apparent impact because he forced the clearance group to work around him?

Of course, in contrast, we know exactly what effect Lever will have at Melbourne. Our defence will reshuffle so that every player back there can now play to all their strengths without being over-exposed for their weaknesses (Oscar's job simplified, Nev not being outsized so often, Hibberd and Hunt getting even more opportunities for fast breaks from intercept marks), with the result of at least three All-Australian selections.

I will say one thing - Port should be a seriously entertaining team to watch in 2018, complete with the excitement of having no idea how they will go in any given game or quarter!

On the other hand, Melbourne might not be so constantly exciting, but I'll be fine with that on the days where we just completely control games.

Depends who is challenging this linking series, Clint. We are a different team to what we were - for so long. Somewhere in the chain, Frosty, Lever and Hibberd must be given a chance to interrupt, fatally; I'd reckon that Jetta would have a say in the proceedings, as well. Not terribly sure that JW will tear us to shreds unless he plays on Oscar McD.

I hope none of the MFC players are quoted in the media saying finals are are possible , a certainty, a flag is just around the corner etc

Time to move on picket

Whatever happens with the Js and Port, we now have a list which we can enjoy watching.

IF OUR success or failure depends on the movement of one very talented player whose application did not meet the expectations of our footy department, then the whole structure remains moot.

I, for one, want to look forward, not backwards or sideways.

What Jack Watts would have said if the brains trust of Demonland were writing his scripts, judging by the way he is portrayed around here:

"on reflection I felt that the only reason Melbourne didn't win the premiership this year was because of me, so I did the right thing by the club and left. Now that I am gone, I can confidently say that Melbourne will win the next eight premierships in a row. Also, I only came to Port Adelaide because they are the only club who would take me. Port were crap last year and will be even crapper with me there next year."

Any discussion of Watts on Demonland always seems to produce what could best be considered "Pavlovian" responses.  He states that we was obviously joking around in the interview and that of course he is going to talk up the team he is now playing for; all perfectly reasonable.

We don't need to knock him. He was a Demon for 9 years and has moved on. We should do the same. 

Port played finals in 2017. We didn't. They have also bulked up their list. On that logic i dont think hes wrong at all
