Do Melbourne supporters dislike hard players?

To me there seems to be a trend where fans favorites are usually nice boys.

Players like Bugg, Kent, Silvia and Moloney to name a few, may have issues with club rules, but having had too passive a playing list for so long surely they should be encouraged not condemned.

In my opinion there's a club bias towards clean cut players like Oliver, Watts, Trengrove,  and so on. Quicknote, I'm not slandering those players just mentioned.

Yep they sure do in the members just so damn conservative,so nice,so fair -minded,so soft.

The slight against Silvia and Moloney was their workrate - check their tackle numbers and you'll see they weren't particularly 'hard' workers or 'hard' players.

The slight against Bugg is that he's not a fantastic footballer.  In addition there's nothing 'hard' about king hitting a 20 year old.

 

Yes - we love Clayton Oliver as he is a contested ball machine, has his head in at every contest and is as 'hard' as hen's teeth. 

We also love Jetta, Jones, Viney, Hogan, Petracca, Brayshaw, Hunt and Vince.  All 'hard' players who go when it's their turn and put their head over the ball.

 

I also would not object to bringing in Brighton Grammar's very own Josh Kelly into our ranks.

How can this even be a topic when we have Rodney Grinter in our Pantheon?

What does 'hard' mean - in the trouser department (then Stringer is ours in the trade season)? hitting blokes? head over the ball players? no surrender/no backdown attitude?

I think we have (and love) some hard players, like Viney, Jones, Oliver, Nev.  We have others that we want more dead set commitment from (even though they may be giving 100% of what they have).  It takes all types.

Think you will find that when Moloney was hard, most supporters loved him.  The umpires used footage of his game during their preseason when they tried to wipe out the heavy hits.  This had an impact on how Moloney played for a couple of years.  Once he got his game sorted, he was a favourite again, until he had a run in with the coach, which turned most sour.

Silvia was one of those players that everyone wanted to love, but it ended up nothing more than lust.  He wasn't hard, he was a gifted footballer that couldn't be bothered taking it to the next level.  Similar to the Moloney footage comment above, I also know for fact that Roos showed his new assistant coaches plenty of footage of Silvia about work rate issues.  Why was it only Silvia?  Because he, like us, knew that there were plenty of players on the list with potential, but were content with being on a list.

There aren't many supporters that wouldn't love Nev Jetta.  He goes when it's his turn, he crashes packs, he puts his head over the pill.  He's not a superstar, and doesn't get the external accolades that most in the team get.

They're two of the examples you gave... you mentioned those two.

I think people were not loving Bugg's goal kicking leading up to the Mills suspension.  FWIW I like Bugg, but I don't love him as he doesn't make a great contribution to the team.

Can't stand that number 7 chap myself. The boy is just too rough.

My real view is that I don't like faux-tough players. I really struggled to warm to Lynden Dunn for that reason. I'd have put Bugg in the same basket until I read his article the other week.

I absolutely love 'proper' tough players like Viney. That also includes players that don't look or act tough, but play in a hard manner; I'd include Jayden Hunt in that group.

Hard, the 4 blokes mentioned outside Bugg are some of the softest players we have seen.  Moloney had 1 good year that coincided with Mark Jamar spooning him half his touches and cracked it when Neeld asked him to be hard and accountable, Sylvia wanted everything to come to him and not earn is own ball and Kent is similar.  Even Bugg he niggles but does he run straight lines when the ball is there to be won, I actually wouldn't call him hard.

Oliver is extremely tough for starters, so to imply he is not is just wrong.

Jetta, Viney and Jones are universally loved, largely because they never take a backward step (and, not coincidentally, the only consistent performers during our recent period of mediocrity). Even blokes like Magner, Tapscott and Terlich quickly won plaudits from supporters during this period for their toughness despite being quite limited players.

2 of the most loved player's currently are Nev and Viney. Throw in Jonesy who is just about universally loved by all who follow MFC and the answer to your question seems to be a resounding no.
