incorrect decision but umpires should be more consistent with the rulebook throughout the year 

I thought the arm slipped up during the tackle while the player was attempting to dispose of the ball, pretty much unassisted... so it's not so different to a low tackle slipping down the legs resulting in an unintended trip. That is, a free kick is given. I had no problem with it.

The standard of the game in Adelaide never reached any great heights and I must confess that like many around here, I shudder every time Ollie Wines bursts through a pack and kicks a damaging goal. The words "Dimitri" and "Toumpas" immediately thrust themselves inside my cranium and I have visions of our Jimmy out there on the field and they give me an automatic hour long migraine.

That's why I'm delighted the umpire stuck it right up the Port Adelaide fans and awarded that penalty for around the neck, at the one time highlighting the stupidity of the official rule interpretation that was apparently ignored and awarding the game to the Eagles. 

Now, I no longer have to watch Ollie/Jimmy again (at least till next year) and I hope the Weagles now go on to do a Footscray and end up beating Adelaide in the granny just to teach them a lesson for tanking in Round 23.

Port was robbed. Kennedy kicked the ball out of the port players fingers. Kicking in danger. 

Shuey is just a cheat. No free for that shrug.

There's no doubt the tackle went high at least in part because Shuey raised his right arm. High contact made, free kick paid. Understandable in that aspect.

Whether or not that ought to be a free kick (i.e. whether a player, such as Shuey, who (deliberately) raises their arm in the tackle to push the tackle high deserves a free) is a different question.

Port ended the year with 14 wins but only two of them was over a top 8 side (one was Sydney in Round 1 and the other, funnily enough, was West Coast). They did what they needed to do and beat the bottom 10 sides but ultimately they just weren't good enough to compete at finals-football level.

Same with Essendon: rarely did Essendon play well against good sides. Exposed yesterday.

I'd back Sydney in to beat Geelong and GWS should, with a 9-day break to West Coast's 7, and at home, get the job done.

I hope our guys watched that game last night and thought that could have been us. God knows I did.

If it was any other player and not Shuey I don't think people would be going on about that last free kick. But as soon as Shuey got the ball I thought he will make sure he will get  a free. Funny enough this time I thought it was there. 

It will be interesting to see how they go against GWS.I think they are a chance. No Cameron, Mumford on crutches and they arent playing great. 

But I hope Nathan Jones was sitting there yesterday watching his brother play in finals jealous as hell and use it in the pre season to motivate him. Jones has been around 10 years and played in only 1 final. Zac has already played in a gf and now gets to play in another finals series again.

I believe teams play 3 double-up games within their group of 6 and the other 2 double-up games allow for derbies and blockbuster clashes.

As previously stated,  if we only ever paid high contact for a dangerous high tackle,  it wouldn't be such an issue.

Was the tackle on Shuey dangerous? In my opinion, obviously not. 

It should be play on and if he doesn't dispose of the ball properly,  he should get pinged.  That might seem harsh but is it?

I don't have a dog in this fight either - neither team holds any interest whatsoever to me.

That's introducing even more subjectivity to the rules, the umpire then has to determine what is "dangerous"

A dangerous high tackle tackle is far more obvious to see though Gonzo. 

My idea of a dangerous high tackle is a stiff-arm belt to the head or deliberate targeting to the head/neck area ... in league & union, those types of dangerous tackles are the only ones that bring penalties.

In the AFL we rarely ever see a player in distress from any of these high tackles either.  We should take no notice of the inflammatory commentary either ... "He nearly took his head off" - that's just more nonsense.

If I had my way, we'd see very few 'around-the-neck' adjudications at all.  And that would in turn largely eradicate the problem that we have. 

And the issue is going to get worse as we see more and more players becoming more adept at milking high contact. 

I know that you believe that the umpires should be able to sort it out but I don't agree.  It happens too quickly and last night's incident highlights that.  Opinion is divided (a day later) so we're back to where we started from.

To be fair, the deliberate out of bounds free against West Coke was laughable. Port had their chances and blew it.

Watching all 4 finals games highlights to me the gap between the top 5 sides (Crows,  Tigers,  Swans,  GWS & Cats) and the next lot (Port,  Dons,  Eagles,  Demons,  Dogs,  Saints,  Hawks & Pies)  At least we're in with the next lot. 

We can bridge the gap but we're going to need an influx of talent to do so - and that might take a couple of off-seasons.  Pace,  skill,  outside run,  height in defence and a better structured forward line are required if we're to become a team that is capable of winning 17-19 games.

We're hard at the contest and we're more than adequate at contested ball,  stoppages,  clearances and the like.  We couldn't say that a few years ago.

Interesting that you say, in watching the finals games you saw the gap between the Cats and Tigers and others including us.

Well I thought the Cats were terrible and the Tigers aside from Dusty were not much better. 

The Tigers just had a Dusty burst of brilliance after the scores were levelled late in the third and they then ran away from a demoralized opponent.

We were beating both of them when we played them during the year, while both were at full strength and we weren't and then we suffered injuries during the game that gifted the wins to them. 

I don't see the obvious gap, between us and them. 

I do see the gap between us and the Crows, Swans and Giants though.

RTG, I'm not sure how you can draw the comparison between a bad call of DOB and a cheating act of ducking to win a game.

Ports chances were blown in front of goal btw.

I do see the gap between us and the Crows, Swans and Giants though.

We can bridge the gap but we need to improve ... the Cats have more game breakers (mainly Dangerfield & Selwood) and the Tigers have a better outside game.  Both those 2 teams generally win games that they should win where as we often don't win those types of games. 

And I thought the Tigers were great on Friday night ... the Cats hung in there for a while but Richmond were relentless.

We lost too many games to below average opposition ... we're inconsistent and we often start poorly.  Despite all that we still won 12 games. 

We need to become much more of a solid outfit.  We improve the list and that will happen.  If we sit back and think we've done enough, we could regress.

anyone see the dirt grub Mitchell spit near Robbie Gray. It was highlighted on the footy show this morning. Disgusting and Mitchell was lucky it didnt land on Gray.
