Some say he is revered and popular amongst team mates. I have my doubts.

I think there's a difference between being a good mate and a respected team mate.

I would have thought so as well. Another indictment for me is that I don't know that he's ever expressed a wish to be in the leadership group, or disappointment at not being included. For a "people person" like Jack it's odd to the say the least.

Not everyone has to or is capable of being a leader, I don't hold that against him.

Not sure about the "revered" part. Perhaps for his off-field activities.

Fair call. I wonder though if there is a core group who work their butts yet Jack gets all the attention? Can breed resentment.

And what did Roos have to say about his abysmal Pre season? Is this the same Paul Roos who had a crack at the media at a post match press conference following a reasonable game from Salem/Tyson and lauding how we'd won in the deal that saw us miss out on Kelly? Not always the guru.

That was in response to someone having a crack was it Robbo? Cant remember but Roosy was standing up for himself there and id say it was the right deal to make If Salem can get an injury free couple of years , hindsight would say we should have taken Zac jones over salem but who knows eh clubs would pay 1 billion and twenty for an injury crystal ball . And yes Roosy is a guru .

Its all over folks.  No more angst and hand wringing required.

Jack will farewell the team at the B&F.

Only one quote to take from the article:  "Melbourne spearhead Jesse Hogan would prefer to keep Watts and is believed to have told his teammate as much when they spoke briefly last week".

Teams in the running:  Port, Geelong, Sydney and apparently StKilda have contacted him.

Good Luck young man.  Go and prove all the doubters wrong.  I will cheer you (not your team) whatever colours you wear.

Thanks for the memories, loyalty to my beloved Demons and sticking with us when we were a basket case.  During that time you were a rare bright spark on rainy winter days at the G.  So, so sad to see you go.

So an injury free Salem and Tyson would now mean we're ahead of not getting Kelly? Wow! Criticism of our choice has been correctly wide ranging, not just Robbo.

Call me a depressing cynic but I think this will be a lose-lose-lose.

I don't think we will get a valuable return that will be able to flip into much useful, unless it gets shoehorned into the Lever deal.

I don't think that Watts is served by leaving the club and will be a shorter leash than even Goodwin and co. had him on (I just doubt he could ever go through a season without a bad patch of footy). And that he will not survive the sea change.

And that leads to the club who gets him not getting the most out of a bloke took a SuperCoach to get the best out of.

I know this reads as an indictment on Jack and to some extent it is, but he loses his support base and those that back him when there are not many that do. That's the fan base, the players, and the FD.

I hope I am wrong on the first two counts but that is my early judgment. ?

Arguably our best ball user and decision maker... His competitiveness wasn’t bad pre injury. We aren’t going to get remotely close to a similar player for the draft pick we will receive for him. Think Melbourne would be mad to let him go.

It will be interesting to see where Watts finishes in the b&f. I doubt he will be in the top 10.

He may love the bloke, but he couldn't possibly look up to Watts the footballer.

He's a quiet, but very smart young man.  He sees what we see.

That takes the cake. ProDee knows what Hogan thinks.  I'm speechless (not quite).

You said it.  None of us knows whether he has ever asked to be in the leadership group etc.  But from your confessed ignorance of the matter you draw a conclusion to suit your view of Watts.  You may be right, who knows, but it is typical of a lot of the post here.

So sad to see him go too. Well said.

Expecting to hear about Hogan's poor body language when nobody can deliver him the ball next year. At least the HUN is doing their part to restore SOME trade value back into Jack:

But this is the beauty of Watts. According to Champion Data, the 153-gamer was the second-best kick inside 50m in the competition over the past two seasons.

You can picture Charlie Dixon or Tom Hawkins licking their lips.

I'm not a great fan of Watts the footballer.  I haven't been for a long time.  But it will be bloody sad to see him go.

He's impossible not to like and his foot skills are superb.  Not to mention, he loves the Dees.

I believe him.

I have got into trouble believing Demons...

I hope I don't come across to anyone as suggesting they are lying - I just sense the massaging of a narrative in an attempt to force Jack's hand and get him to decide to move. Not stay and fight for his place, but take his seeming lack of professionalism AND his contract AND his underling value (2nd round pick?) and go.

If my coach and FD wanted an outcome like this, I would do the same. Mahoney is just trying to get the best outcome for the MFC.

There are so many stories of Dees fans talking to him in passing and being so impressed, and he always had time for fans, or to plug the Dees, and he obviously stuck through a lot of nonsense at the club and put up with a great deal of heat, both earned and unearned.

Footy clubs are really built around personalities like Jack.

I've not been a fan, but have admired his skills and his loyalty. Last year against Hawthorn, he was going one way and Lewis coming the other... Watts bent over and picked up the ball, and Lewis didn't commit. I thought that might be a turning point.

And QB this year - the best of Watts - speed, hard running (not ignored this time) and real coolness under pressure.

I hope this is the right decision... It's a big one, and Goodwin has a lot riding on it. I just hope this isn't a Neeld moment. The FD have been pretty good over the last little bit, and this one is one of the biggest decisions.

Won't quite be the same at the G.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
