Same, Nasher, I was exactly side on to the goals. I actually watched the crowd as he kicked it to find out the result, the crowd rising and the thunderous roar was confirmation enough! My blood pressure was so high and I was screaming so loud, I nearly fainted. I had to grab onto my mate to stop going down as we went utterly beserk. 

An indelible memory, right up there with the best footy moments I've witnessed.

God knows how I'll fare if we ever win a final!

Wonder how the Pies fans they would have rated the 15-0 free kick count against us in favour of the Eagles, at half time in Perth a couple of years back, or the 14-1 at half time against the Dogs a few years back or other similar stats we have been on the bad end of over the last few years. If it happened to them they would be marching in the streets.

Finally got down from the footy desert (AKA NSW) to see the match.  Although in a perfect spot to see Watt's goal, I didn't see Watts kick the ball  - I saw him running in and then a pile of C'wood supporters in front of me leapt to their feet in my way.  But over their heads I saw the ball sail through the middle, followed by the collapse of said supporters.  Very satisfying. 

Does anyone know what Watts did to annoy the C'wood supporters? Love to see a video.

BTW, does anyone know why the small TV screens they have scattered about the Olympic stand are about 1 second behind the play (and the main scoreboard which I couldn't easily see)?  Very frustrating for the short-sighted.

Need Brissie to beat Port at AO (unlikely but hoping) and the Swans to beat the Tigers at the G and ourselves to beat the Dogs will have us sitting in 4th on the ladder, giving us a 4 point gap on 5th.

Actually this is pretty funny. They clearly don't know the rules.

There is no such rule as 'dropping the ball'.

You only need to start you run up before the shot clock reaches 0.

You can't ride someone's back into the ground as Aish did.

They don't understanmd prior opportunity.

Would love to do a rebuttal of that but CGAF.

It was 23 to 2 at half time. Simply astounding. And the AFL and umpires dept had no truck with it either.

Watched the replay last night and you could only see a couple of little snippets in and around bottom and side of overall shots but looked like he just turned to the crowd, smiled, poked his tongue out and had his arms in the air. He may have said something at one point but  seems to be totally blown out of proportion by a bunch a blow hard tinker bells.

This. For emphasis.

The Collingwood players were trying to "hold the ball in" on tackles to create stoppages. That's fine, but if you DRAG the ball in, you have to dispose of it from underneath you, or it's HTB. Whenever this happened to Melb (e.g. Viney) they always got rid of it.

And if the ball is dislodged in the tackle, it's play on.

The one I like best in when Vince "threw" it - along the ground.

Hahahahah, the clown who made this doesn't even know the rules. Jack Watts shot clock, play on....lol.

Half the free kicks they are whinging about could have just as easily been free kicks to us and most of the holding the balls calls, the ball was knocked out in the tackle, kicked or the player was bumped and not tackled. Embarrassing video.

The only thing I can see is right after Trac kicks the goal from receiveing a 50 in the 3rd Watts walks over  to high 5 him and you can clearly see him saying something or showing a cheeky smile towards their cheer squad. Love it!!!

As Fasolo kicked his goal siren sounded and Watts was on the fence arms in the air.. can only assume he was given plent of spray and he enjoyed the moment.

I nearly fainted too for the same reason. My companion at the game was a Collingwood supporter so I had to sit down on my own. My voice is still hoarse and my throat still sore.

The other odd bit is that I can't remember any of the play after that. I watched the last two minutes clip earlier going "nup, this is all new" even though I watched it intently in real time.

I too think it was one of the most extraordinary things I've seen (and felt) in all my years of watching football. Many factors went into creating the theatre of the moment.

The game had been an emotional roller-coaster for all supporters. It was big crowd. An expectant crowd. It had been an absolutely frenetic game to that point, and the game was clearly drawing to a close. It was literally on a knife's edge. Both sides had a lot to lose, and a lot to gain from the victory. The last 10 minutes of the final quarter seemed to last an eternity - I found it to be absolutely torturous and emotionally-draining in the extreme. It was also dark and cold and, as such, the floodlit arena commanded everybody's complete attention. For this very moment, the ground became a theatre and this was the final act. And everyone seemed to know it.

As soon as Watts gathered the ball, it was as though time had just been suspended, and no one could do anything about it. Everyone was absolutely transfixed by this moment in time: the players, the coaching staff, the umpires, the entire crowd. It seemed as though everyone was acutely aware that a significant event was about to unfold right before our eyes, but we were all powerless to influence the outcome. It had already been scripted, but no one, including the central actor, knew what was about to happen. That it was Jack Watts who commanded centre-stage added to the spectacle. The spotlight was on him. And him alone. You could hear a pin drop.

And then Watts threaded the needle. It was a bloody tough kick. Most players would've missed it, even though they'd have slotted the same shot every time in practice. The gravity of the kick would've been too much for most to handle.

As ProDee observed - it was pure redemption for a player who'd carried so much torment over so many years. That it occurred on the very stage that had initiated so much of the negativity just added to the episode.

An unbelievable moment. I'll never forget it.

 

Simply brilliant stuff, Ron.  I teared up reading it!  Great description of a great moment in the history of the MFC!!  Well done!

I agree, for once in my life, with Terry Wallace, who said on SEN yesterday that Monday's game was "quite comfortably the best game of the year so far".

We did an amazing job coming back in the 3rd quarter, while getting even more smashed in the hitouts & contested marks than we were in the first half.

And we should have steamrolled them in the last quarter, but they did incredibly well to not let us get more than 2 goals in front. Both sides were the epitome of "hard but fair", but there was heaps of skill too, plus Howe's incredible marks, Jack's goal, Fas's goal after the siren. The game had absolutely everything, and was played in the best possible spirit; every single player put in. And the interactions between the two teams after the game was great to see, possibly helped by Howe and Dunn still being great mates with our guys.

If Pies play up to that standard for the rest of the season, they'll be fine.

Yet some of their supporters prefer to sook because the umpires didn't hand them the game on a plate.
