Have a look at the Northen Blue vs. Casey thread. Think you'll find that most people agree that wearing a helmet does not help that much with concussion as the brain still rattles around in the head when knocked.

Oh ok didn't realise that but it may give him more confidence with some sort of protection on his head rather than nothing at all.

Yeah you might be right. Gives him some confidence. Seems to work well for Caleb Daniels.

Angus needs to have this year off and come back fresh to pre season, if the neurologist recommends he can still play. If he were my son I wouldn't allow him anywhere near a football.

The kid has a glass skull and should ponder taking the year off or quitting.

Sad to say it but this is ridiculous for all concerned.

we have a duty of care as he does to himself.

I also note that he might have a genetic disposition to brain problems given the utter garbage enunciated by his Uncle Jim when I am forced to listen to his commentary .

That said I hope he can play on .

Poor young fella.  Even if he plays on (and I hope he does) every time he cops a whack, regardless of whether it is to the head or not, trainers will be around him in a flash. Further, it without doubt will affect his confidence and impact on his natural game which is to go hard at the footy.   Like all of us, I would be disappointed if he had to give the game away as he is "best 22" when he's right. However, when all is said and done, it's only a game and having a healthy, happy and full life far outweighs kicking a footy around.

 

 

(Should he continue, it maybe worth having a look at a US company, Unequal, that  manufactures headgear known as a "halo" which helps to reduce the effects of head injuries)

The debate re the value if helmets continues

Was he concussed again today? Or maybe very cautiously managed after a "slight head knock"?

Can anyone inform  us what is the background to Caleb Daniels' wearing of headgear - Did he have a history of concussions, or "lesser" head knocks?

interesting as it is marketed as favoured by soccer players

A lot of work being done on the long term impact of heading the ball in soccer.

The impact has been reduced over the years because the balls are now lighter and not water logged but it is still a concern.

Not sure that it is designed for AFL type bumps but I'm certainly no expert.

I'd like to see him put on the LTI and just take some time to get his head right.

At the moment we have great midfield depth, but with Lewis and Vince eventually finishing up his importance will be more long term.

I think we will still make it, just going through a rough patch.

I think it may just help Gus; because he can't keep getting hit in the head each time he goes on the field. Maybe you could e-mail the club on Monday with the information about the unequal halo? They need to do something before it's to late.

Well I have been very vocal in this issue and I will say this as a father and phys ed teacher, he cannot possibly go on. He has had too many head hits. Time for MFC and doctors to advise that life is sacred and above and beyond footy his long term wellbeing should be Number 1 Priority. Time to retire IMV! Footnote: At least give it away for the rest of the year and reasses!

PF I understand what you're saying. However, I am sure the club has experts who are providing on-going advice relating to this.

While it is important that he looks after his health, he wouldn't even be playing right now if they were advised it was too dangerous. I think he will have some time off, but saying that he should give it away without knowing any information other than what you read and hear on DL is a bit extreme.

He will come back I'm sure of it.
