I don't have the energy to debate the point today but there were many other turnovers that resulted in goals today.

You just like to pick the easy ones that are on the last line of defence because it suits you're knowledge of the game.

Take a bex and go lay down mate.

Bye.

If he likes to just thump a ball without thinking, stick him on a wing where it goes into our forward line.

Captaincy.

Too late to change it now, but he should've continued to focus solely on developing his own game.

Bernie Vince finished, LOL. That is classic. Vince won a B&F as a midfielder. He is a good midfielder. He is an effective midfielder. Came into the club and looked a level above most of our midfielders. Now Vince is being played down back. Bernie Vince was never a back man. Why he is even down back is head scratching. So basically, Bernie Vince should retire because the coaches decide to play him in an unsuitable role - or a role he is less effective at (compared to other positions)?

Vince should be in the midfield. He buys and sells Viney and Tyson. Absolutely buys and sells them.

How is it overreacting when majority on here are agreeing with me bar you? Your seriously delusional in the same form as Saty with the way you carry on.

Vince has been cooked since about the 2nd half of last year. He is a shadow of his former self.

Your 100% right DD... The game past him by half way through last year, he's ever reliable foot skills & decision making has evaporated. Why you try & pin point a 20m pass in the back 50 when you lead by 3 points is beyond me.. Kick it down the line & at worst cause a stoppage. That's not his only problem either, he consistently makes poor skill & decisions, I've been off him for awhile.. Not sure if the move to HB has been good for him, he can kick a goal so don't know why he isn't tried across half forward if he isn't up to the midfield anymore.. Least if he turns it over in the forward half it's not critical

What an uneducated view of today's proceedings. Without vince we are a lesser side. There were other things that cost us a lot more. Freo gambled on the contest all day, it paid off. Their spread was too quick and they used our ground better than we did. Without the bounce going their way all day those gambles don't pay off and we win.

Hi sweetness, it was the [censored] poor 3rd quarter from all 22, not an individual, that cost us the game

It seems to be that whenever the game's in the ballance & the pressure's at its peak, Bernie just finds a way to manufacture something that's just unnecessary or dumb... especially for someone who's a multiple best & fairest winner & that has also displayed such great kicking skills over time.

Key word - manufacture.

Doesn't seem to handle the pressure well at all down back.

Hibberd & Lewis down back will help us release him to a wing, maybe?

If you weren't at the game forget it , bomb was the least option - Bernie lives again tough ask at the end to mark that footy that was short and umm had  an operation during  the week . Tough gig was ok

He is in a bit of limbo at the moment.

I actually think this about Jones, Viney, Vince and Lewis. The need to develop a different generation and the rise of Oliver has thrown our midfield for a loop a bit.

If those guys can be as valuable around the ground then we'll really develop well. We don't need 8 inside midfielders, we need a bit of balance, and I think with some of these guys being asked to play different roles they often seem a bit off the boil.

Vince is definitely in our best 22. Unfortunately he had a stinker today. One of the worst games he's played for the club. That bomb into the 50 in the dying stages was unforgivable, had link up options all around him. Senior players should know better.

If we want to single out players from the game today, then we could have a thread on half the side.

Vince made a blunder, and one he shouldn't have made.  I agree with you dazzle.  But why aren't we then starting a thread on Weideman?  Why not start one on some of the other players who had ordinary games, like Hannan, Stretch, Melksham, etc. etc.

I know Vince has made a few blunders in his time, but the loss doesn't lie squarely at his feet and nor should he be blamed for it.  Where was our midfield when the game was on the line and they allowed guys like Neale, Fyfe and Mundy to run riot?

Plenty of people we can point the blame at for today's loss.

He might be in our best 22 but il be very surprised if he is on our list next year. Is he keeping someone like a Brayshaw out? perhaps, but his form has deteriorated since the 2nd half of last year.

He'll still get his 25 disaposal game this year but pace of the game and the need to slide in the likes of Brayshaw Smith Wagner into the line up will really have to come into play.

Posted

Vince is easily in our best side and is probably being played out of position due to the lack of class in our backline.  He tries the impossible a little too often coming out of defence and has made the odd poor decision, but he isn't alone there.  I'd prefer to see him up the ground, on a wing perhaps.  I thought today would have been a good chance to move him up field in the last.  He's a fair way from finished and a long way from the reason we lost today.  For the second game in a row we had more scoring shots and managed to lose.  Lack of composure in front of goal is fatal.

Chipped it when he should have bombed it and then bombed it when he should have chipped it.

Veterans should know better

When we were 3 points up with 90 sec to go we chipped it around from the goal square to the southern side and back again while Salem and I think Hunt were set up on the northern stand boundary with no opponents, I couldn't believe it that our back man did not look over to the obvious target that would have soaked up more time and provided an avenue to attack again, instead we ended up kicking to a contest and coughed up a goal.

However it wasn't just Vince we played a lot of dumb football today, kicking to contests when there were players in the clear. Over use of handball allowed Freo to bottle up play and take control in the 3rd.

It's not just the mistakes he made in the fourth (which, IMO, are not defensible for a leader).

He played rubbish all day.

He's not "finished" but, equally, he was terrible today so to the extent that we're shining the light on him, I say that's fair. Needs to improve, greatly.

He should've learnt his lesson against the gold coast. But no, he did it again. So frustrating. David King's tweet summed it up well  "Poor efforts from @bvince23 in that last quarter. Far from an elite performance, dropped marks. Poor kicking, disgusting for a leader."

Posted

Once we get Lewis and Hibberd back into the side I could see him playing as a defensive half forward.  He's a ripping shot for goal and his turnovers won't be as pronounced.

If a defender then you need to break lines by foot or pace and have defensive awareness

He doesnt break lines no more

I cant see him in the middle and what does he bring fwd?

'Bernie Vince at the Finish' may be a fairer thread title. And there is a reasonable body of evidence that he lacks offensive and defensive composure at the pointy-end. Not just in this and the GC game, but I recall on several other occasions in close matches as well.

That said: he's not a true back-flanker, and his midfield extract-and-hack style no longer suits our game-style. I would prefer to see him hovering around half-forward, but there is probably a reasonable case to be made that he won't be going much further for positional squeeze. Unfortunately, Lewis could be heading this way as well. Too much young, future talent concentrated in the middle and not enough mids who can play well enough on the forward and back flanks.

Although, he also had a toe-nail ripped off last week - that certainly hurts, and I wouldn't want to be kicking a football straight after without some serious pain-killers.

I just looked back then too. Looks like he deleted it. Probably because he tagged Vince in it.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
