Not really.  The medicos are very good at diagnosing the structure of a knee injury during the game and wouldn't have let him back on if they thought it was significant.

The club expects him to get up for next weeks game.

I think there's too much focus on winning or losing those matches, but I'm sure few will agree.

We're in the learning phase.  The losses likely cost us finals which are a great learning opportunity.  But there's other learning in adversity.

I thought you were of the opinion that anything was possible given the evenness of the competition meaning the loss of games is critical, but perhaps that changes with the loss of Gawn and Spencer.

Back to reading the draft class of 2017 I guess.

Trying to keep this in perspective... but I don't think I have enough Islay in-house to cope with a Petracca knee problem. I realise that is my fault, and reflect poor preparation for the season. I will rectify the situation this afternoon.

We won't win a game without a ruckman. The last quarters against Richmond and Geelong show how bad we are without one. To have to rely on Watts and Pedersen means trouble. Looks like we will be talking about draft picks again, I thought we were past this. [censored] injuries have killed us this year.

There's a big difference between going into a game without a recognised ruckman and losing your ruck during the game.

We were slaughtered in the last quarter, but you could argue Watts and our midfield broke even during the third term.

As you say, big 6 weeks coming up and our midfield will need to adjust accordingly.  We'll almost need to rove to their ruckman in the coming weeks.

We could get away with Gawn being injured but to lose Spencer as well is a massive blow. We only have kids left in King and Filipovic who you wouldn't think would get thrown to the wolves. Pedersen and Watts are second stringers.

I'm glad Trac is ok but gees you have to feel for Spencer. This was the chance of his career and by the time he's fit again Max will be pushing back for selection. Terrible luck.

Perhaps I put it poorly. I'm not underestimating the massive loss but when it happens during a game, structures are confused, players are in unfamiliar situations and with Watts rucking so much we have a glaring hole up forward. Whereas, going into the game without a key ruckman gives a chance to select/ set up differently. The Dogs did this very well at times.

Yes in fact we actually scored 4.1 to 1.5 with no ruckman and 2 on the bench. The conditions finally wore us out by the second half of the last without the rotations i guess. Also broke even in hitouts to advantage.

Melbourne has confirmed ruckman Jake Spencer will miss six to seven weeks.

Spencer injured his AC joint in the Anzac Day eve clash against Richmond, and will see a surgeon on Wednesday.

Forward Tim Smith also has a fractured rib and a punctured lung, and will spend a few days in hospital.

Melbourne's general manager of football operations Josh Mahoney confirmed the news.

“Jake received a knock to his AC joint early in the game last night and was ruled out prior to half-time. He had scans today (Tuesday), which showed damage to the AC joint. He will consult a surgeon tomorrow, with the most likely option being surgery later in the week,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

Mahoney said Smith will be monitored more closely.

There is currently no time frame on his return.

“Tim was taken to hospital at half-time during last night’s match after a knee to his ribs," he said.

"Investigations have shown a fractured rib and punctured lung. He will stay in hospital over the next few days.”

There is more hope for Christian Petracca though, after the Demon hurt his knee.

The club is monitoring him, with the hope he will play next week.

"Christian received a knock to the knee early in the match last night," Mahoney said.

"He played out the rest of the match and has today been cleared of any major structural damage of the knee. He will be monitored during the week."

They wernt really playing with this level of intensity last year or previous years. Comes with the territory i guess.

Luke Darcy, Tim Watson and McClure all advocating a mid-season draft after what has happened to us. "There'd be a couple of ruckmen running around in the wafl or sanfl that could help out the Dees" etc.

Shouldn't be too far away when more and more media figures join the chorus.
