OSCAR McDONALD

He's definitely improving but he's got a long way to go. He's a decent kick even though he shanked one badly today. He's pretty slow though and I wish he'd bring more intensity to contests. Hopefully that comes with more size and confidence.

Still loves a 1m handball to no one and some strange defensive efforts, but got to give him credit for his positioning, ability to find the ball and improving disposal.

Not convinced dribbling it inside 50 is a great long term strategy but it the option was right.

I'd love to find a young Josh Gibson instead of playing 3 talls, but I like the way Oscar is developing a two way game and with more size and strength you'd think he starts to impact contests.

Not fully sold yet but some good steps in the right direction.

Agree - disposal by foot is already superior to his big brother's

Didn't he do the pass to Pedo in the last quarter that dribbled along the ground?

I still have a couple of queries (as I do with most players), but he has been good the last month or so.

My only knocks are his composure in tight situations and not hitting markings contests as hard as he could.

Every young player has things they need to work on, and as I said, his last month has been good stuff.

Fair enough. They're both the sort of thing that usually improves with time & experience though, especially as his body bulks up.

The field dribble kick is the new drop punt, just watch it take off. Clearly blew the game open. Hawks never recovered from it.

I've been critical, but he was good today. Just needs to develop and back himself more, his skills aren't bad.

Field dribble kick, mate.

Last two weeks his been one of our best going inside 50. We are going to get an awesome return for pick 53. North will regret not have taken him.

i was critical however now I think he will go on to play 200+ for the Dees including a premiership or 2.

I'd definitely prefer he kick it too low but hard & straight, than kick it over Pedo's head or miss him by metres either side or kick a floater that gets cut off.

That kick to Pedo was after Oscar ran right down the field collecting a string of possessions to get the ball down to our attacking half. Something I have never seen his brother do.

it was dreadful but his brother can slot goals from the same situation .

Lucky the grubber went straight to Pedo who cleaned it up.

That kick was woeful and we were lucky Pedersen cleaned it up, let's be honest, but the play that lead to it was excellent. He run hard all the way up the ground to get on the end of it twice; the fact that he was even in a position to deliver an i50 in that situation made me very happy.

It comes back to the point I made in the week about our coaches forgiving disposal errors if the player otherwise does the right thing. This shows that we supporters can too if we're in a good mood and there was no negative consequence.

Let's not think about what might have happened if he'd done that in the back half.

Rubbish, Tom's been pushing up the ground and attacking his entire career.

Tom does far more attacking than Oscar does, and Tom is better at it than Oscar, too.

You are so off the mark.

Didn't actually look like he wanted it back, but handballed to a guy with his back to our 50. Was good he gave it back but I think the kick was a mixture of being spent and not expecting it back

Dont underestimate the chaos ball into the forward 50. It can be a very effective weapon!

...but yeah, he fluffed it majorly and we were lucky with the result in that instance.

He is like a baby giraffe, awkward, a bit slow, lacks intensity, but gees I think back to Frawley and Tom, and both were absolutely putrid when they started out. True we allowed 200 more entries into the opposition forwardline every week, but they looked so lost and out of their depth.

Oscar doesn't look scared, and generally he is composed enough with the footy. Defensively he is sound, but obviously needs 10kgs on his frame to be able to physically compete one on one (his brother shows that physically he can easily develop). In the air he is good, his awareness is ok and his ball use better than his brother's.

There is a lot of potential there, and the best way to rapidly develop Oscar is to play him at AFL level, and take the good with the bad. It will serve us well in the long term that we are persevering with him now.

Also, how can you not love seeing this on the field

I have been coaching juniors for a long time and whilst it is some jump to AFL footy the concept is the same.

If you are not making mistakes as a young player then there is a good chance that by playing safely you are treading water and stifling your development.  Yes you need to know your limitations, but how do you know where they are unless you test yourself.

I won't bemoan a risky Tmac kick that would be the right option but doesn't hit a target, or Jayden Hunt running himself into trouble.  Great teams will push themselves to the brink of their abilities, that is why they become great.

You need to pop in to the "changes against (whoever)" thread and join me in my weekly "sigh, no, Harmes won't be dropped" ritual by the sounds of it.

Vince's chaos ball not long after worked out well as well.  2 straight from ordinary kicks.

On a serious note about that kick, at least he saw the right option. I was starting to lose my [censored] in the previous few weeks with the repetitive long bombs to no one.

The kid lowers his eyes, while more senior teammates boot the [censored] out of it.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
