The difference is Bugg and Kennedy get the ball.  Newton had one game in his career where he got 20 possessions; fewer in every other game.  Just not good enough for a midfielder.  

He had strengths, though, he got the ball in dangerous positions and kicked goals in more games than not in his Melbourne appearances.  Great example of how you only need to be a whisker off standard sometimes.

Didn't mind Newton, the only one of the 4 maybe worth hanging onto. He could kick a goal and natural goalkickers aren't that easy to find.

He may get a shot as a rookie somewhere.

Newton had 2 absolutely cracking games in 2015 against GC in rd 1 (2 goals) and GWS in rd 23 (3 goals).

A shame it didn't work out as he had a bit of class.

No surprise it was those teams, especially the round 23 GWS team that had a heap of injuries. His skill was great, but his work rate wasn't AFL standard. Shame he got injured over preseason but it didn't seem to improve at Casey as the year went on.

Wish there was some way to insert a tank in his body because his kicking was certainly better than most of our players.

The one disappointment amongst that is Max King. For a moment there he looked like he could come on, but wasn't to be. Puts us a back at square one a bit in the developing rucks department.

Didn't seem to apply the same level of commitment as the other blokes you mentioned.

Newton could probably consider himself unlucky in more ways than one. Might still be on the list if Lewis hadn't come knocking, with another season for things to finally click.  As it stands, cut from two clubs - the first stacked in the midfield - for a handful of games and he probably won't get another look.

Unlike others, I really wanted Michie kept because he is all class and our VFL forwards love having him in the side because he is so good at hitting targets.

Ultimately he is just a tad slow to make it at AFL level, but he's been an absolute star at VFL level and I imagine he'll be snapped up by Port Melb or Willy for next year.

Dawes I suspect never really got over his hand injuries from his Collingwood days. He's an honest worker, but you can't keep dropping marks at AFL level.

Newton's cards were effectively marked when he was majorly exposed for pace at Subiaco in 2015. But he has that knack of just being in the right spot to snag a lovely goal.

Max King seems like a lovely guy and has nice skills, but hasn't been able to impose, even in the development league. Could be a very handy VAFA player next season.

I think that the gap between VFL and AFL is just too great.. it appears that for many players who excel in VFL  , then struggle to  make it at the top level is a high percentage .. ie Michie Newton , cake walk at VFL but AFL ??!!!!

SANFL and WAFL looks to be much better in making that extra step to AFL .. 

Needs to be a step in between to truly gauge their talents

I wish the best to each of them. I still recall the passion showed by Dawes in the last VFl game against Box Hill where he more or less coached the team from the boundary. He is a quality humanoid.

I really respect Michie. I recall how [censored] off he was when sitting on the outer during the 24th man vacuum. The man can play. I would have liked him to be retained.

Newton's time with us was beset by injuries. I wish himm well. The man can play.

Nah. Bugg and Kennedy work hard both ways. They're not as silky as Newton, but he doesn't get enough of it or work hard enough both ways.

Very true - just like Grimes, Terlich and Matt Jones, when given the opportunity, they each respectively gave all that they had.

Regrettably, they simply did not have enough to give (or at least not enough to make an impact of any lasting significance).

Whilst like other posters I wish them all the best for the future and hope they get further opportunities at some level, their departure signifies that the last of the stopgap recruits and the bulk of the battle scarred players from the despairing & desperate years are now gone.

Better times clearly beckon.

As much as I hate to see good men leave the club it's necessary and had to be done. I still recall a game against Hawthorn at the G, a few years ago, when Dawes took 12 marks in the game, it was as a pity he couldn't repeat that performance on a regular basis. He's a good man is Chris  

Michie showed a bit a couple of years ago but just didn't seem up to it, neither as Newton, pity but that's football. 

All the best guys and maybe there will be a mentoring/coaching position for Dawes, he's a clever guy.

Is there a list-point that you have decent ready-made players that can step into the team that aren't worth replacing for spec development trades/picks? Bugg/Kennedy/Harmes/Vanders are pretty decent 25s-30s on a list even if they don't display much more improvement (which I all think can bar maybe Bugg).

If Taylor keeps finding gems in the fourth round like Hunt, OMac etc, we'll be able to compete with any list in the league. I truly believe our best 22 has one or two weak links and another link or two that need to improve if they're to maintain their spot(s). That's incredible given our 'best' 22 at the start of 2014.

The other guy I forgot RE: delistings next year will be Trenners unfortunately. Lumumba might be in trouble too.
