That deal hasn't happened yet and they got T.Mitchell cheaply for 14.  You can't make an omelet without breaking some eggs.  Let's see what their entire trade period looks like before making an assessment.  Quite frankly the real outcome won't be known at least until well into 2017.  If O'Meara can play to capacity it's a big win - he was a star, if his injuries seriously restrict him it's a bust.

Perhaps, but i reckon moving on some super loyal players like Whitecross who turned down a big deal just last season to stay loyal to the Hawks and a couple of club champions for an injury prone player isn't going to do wonders for morale and club culture, but as you said time will tell.

Players love winning.  If the new look Hawks start winning again next season all will be fine, if not - look out.

One of my good mates used to work for the box hill Hawks. Called me and confirmed Lewis to Melbourne,  and he is hearing straight swap for pick 48. Still mates with a few players so I trust him on this.

They have disposed of two players who were best and second best in their B&F and they still have about 4 of their stars who are starting to fall off the perch.

They have replaced them with a player who could be anything from an A grade mid to an injury prone could have been, a forward ruck who has shown a tendency to be lazy and unaccountable and a mid from the Swans who has, in part, been shielded from a tag or any serious attention.

I doubt that O'Meara/Mitchell can carry the Midfield and with an ageing Hodge, Gibson and Burgoyne and a missing Roughy, I can't see them maintaining their position, this is the time when Clarkson has a chance to show exactly how great a coach he is.

I'd probably give up 48 if we had to but right now I'd stare down the Hawks and see if they'll blink. 

Same goes for Essendon and giving up next years 2nd rounder. 

We need to do our best to hang on to the 2nd and 3rd round picks this year to keep adding quality youngsters. Getting shuffled to the back of the draft for Hibberd and Lewis will hurt us long term.

According to this "commentator", it will most likely be 66 or 84 that gets Lewis across the line.

Hawthorn are laughing all the way to the bank.  Hartung will never be a A-grade or B+ footballer.  Never.  Sam Mitchell is just past his prime and will retire in 1 year.  Lewis' decline will occur faster than most footballers.

 

When you come to the end of a dynasty, the tendency is to be ultra-loyal to your premiership heroes.  Geelong, bar Stevie J, did it, when they were forced to land a top-3 player about to enter his prime.  Brisbane kept their ageing stars, whereby Aker was forced out because he didn't conform...and there was the Bradshaw debacle for Fev.

 

Clarkson is a genius.  Mitchell is what 34.  In 18 months, he'll be in pasture.  But at least this 34 year old can move sideways in elite terms and has special awareness second-to-none.  Lewis is getting slower, and wasn't fast to begin with.  Hawthorn wont miss him in 12 months.  Actually, anybody that new anything about footy, came to Hawthorn's last game this year, knowing that the Bulldogs were going to treat them like wet cement.  Don't get me wrong, Hawthorn minus Hill, have our problem with less outside speed and run.  But Clarkson, if he can swindle pick 48 for an ageing one-dimensional 30 year old going on 36.....then it will be a decision that pushes them closer to their next window quicker.  The cocky eastern suburbs Hawthorn supporters may not like it in the short-term, but this strikes me as Croad mark II, so they will soon praise the decision.

 

 

As I said time and time again for the last 18 months, we are too one-paced and lack line-breakers.  This trade does nothing to improve it, only enhance it.

Hibberd will do that from the HB line. So will Salem and Hunt will run with it. Its all going to plan
