Spencer was great, in the ruck and around the ground. Gave a couple of frees away only because he tried so hard. He is a handy backup to Gawn.

thought jake's ruck work was as bad as i've seen from him. comprehensively beaten......pretty well agree with the rest

Would love the club (be that Melb or Casey) to put a complaint in to the VFL about the surface. Those practice wickets looked like they were ready to play on.

I walked over it at half time to check it out. The surface and even underneath was quite good. Not a practice wicket anymore. It has been replaced or overlaid with turf strips. Salo was unlucky with the tackle but it would probably be a similar outcome if that tackle happened anywhere on the ground - except maybe the real soft and sticky stuff in the middle.

Not good news..

Casey Scorpions coach Justin Plapp already ruling Christian Salem out of the @VFL GF. 'Really bad concussion, that one', he said.

I saw him walking out of the ground. Was walking as if he had been run over by a steam train. Good news is he was up walking and seemed coherent with his mates.

Fair enough, looked hard on tv. Thanks for checking it out.

I didn't think it was a dirty tackle, just a strong one and a difficult position for Salem getting pinned from behind and no where to go.

Maybe it's the trade off to the deliberate rule where in the past players would just paddle it on or pump it long.

I missed the game so have been reading through the thread.  Thanks to everyone for the running commentary, just a shame Saty had to derail yet another thread with his usual off topic dribble and baiting of other posters.

Very excited about Joel Smiths prospects.

Disagree I thought Spencer was good.

So did i, in consideration of the bloke who contested the centre bounces against him didn't look at the ball, at any stage and in any contest and wasn't penalized for jumping into his body.

The biggest thing I got out of today was Joel Smith.

Pace, height, decision making, disposal and he cracked in.

A Jayden Hunt type story in the making.

That was a standout for me too. Never seen him play like that before. A definite breakout game (though for complete disclosure I've only seen a minority of Casey H&A games this season).

I'm a huge fan of Hunt but I don't know how the coaches / selectors picked up on his talents. Must have been through what they saw at training.  But in what I saw at VFL level over the last 2-3 years, I reckon Hunt didn't ever show as much in one game as Joel displayed today.

ANB was a pass. Kennedy really disappointing. McInerny looked much better than Spence who seems to be going nowhere fast.

I think you'll find Spence generally performs a bit better on a dry deck chook. McInerny did play well though. Reminds me a little of Twiggy at times albeit a tad taller

I wouldn't be upset with Tim Smith and Declan Keilty.

Tim Smith is a must get IMO. Dead eye dick medium tall forward who can take great contested marks but can also be played a little higher up the ground if needed. Bull body and tackles like one also. Hurts the opposition when he gets to them. Would easily be as valuable as the package if he gets his fitness right and takes himself to another level.

Medium tall forwards with talent and finish don't grow on trees and can change the face of a game when it's a tight contest with solid marking and accurate goal kicking. They also cause headaches for the opposition selectors, very hard to match up on.

7 tackles today and most of those were very solid hits. Don't think he missed any shots on goal either. IMO he would make a more valuable forward than Hogan at this point if he's willing/wanting to step up and bring the intensity/tank required for AFL.

Hogan has potentially more upside but needs to fix that kicking technique to fulfill his potential. Smith would also be a great insurance policy for Hogan if he gets injured or heads home. Regardless, imagine these 2 running riot in our forward line. Would be hard to stop. Also frees up Watts to play a little more time higher up the ground on occasions and use his smarts and great kicking skills to hit up either both of these 2 more often coming i50 or other targets i50.

And a quick work on Joel Smith.  He did a couple of things in front of me that really impressed.  He seemed very quick and strong with fantastic athletic ability and very good hands.  Took a difficult half volley very cleanly and seemed really hard at the ball.  He's a really interesting prospect and just needs to learn to find the ball and his kicking seemed suspect.

Couldn't agree more, has all the tools. Was particularly impressed with how good he is inside and always looking to use his pace

I don't know how post a link, but the MFC Instagram has footage of the boys belting out the song. It's a must-see, purely for Choo Choo not knowing the words apart from the shouty chorus bit. He just wears a massive grin throughout, fookin classic, I love that bloke. Pretty good song as well - first time I'd heard it. Can anyone put the link up as I'm not savvy enough?!

Hogan's defensive work and kicking need work, but let's not get carried away. Hogan kicked 39 goals in 15 games as a 17-18 year old.

Smith's 25 and has kick 28 goals in 18 games in his best year.

I think he'd compete with Vanders as the 2nd medium forward alongside Watts. Smith can take a bigger grap and kick straighter but otherwise he doesn't have the midfield ability and who knows if he can bring the tackling and pressure game to AFL level. Yeah Watts could play up and Smith deeper than Vanders and we don't have another medium forward type on the list so that could be a positive.

I like his combination of pressure, tackling and one on one wins on the ground and in the air. So I'd love it if he got a shot. But I think he's also going to have a few knocks on him and there's a reason most 25 year olds aren't drafting. The step up between VFL and AFL is so big that if he wasn't drafted I'd understand that.

If there was room for 60 players on AFL lists not 44 I'd have signed Keilty, McInerny, Smith and Hutchins today, all look like they have a lot to offer. But there isn't so I'm not expecting too much.

Yeah, watched him closely and thought 'Lad, you might have just got yourself off the rookie list'

I think he will make it in the big league

It looked like the tackle did it. I think he was out cold before the kick in the head by teammate.

I haven't seen the incident on tv but it appeared that Salem was run down from behind and forced forward into the ground by the tackler. His head appeared to hit hard. He sat up later when the trainers were there, but he looked out of it and they laid him down again before carrying him off.

Well done to Daniel Cross to who has just won a premiership for Albury tigers.

Well done to Albury, although they are packed with talent. Years ago I watched Daniel's old man Peter run around for the Tigers up there...and his uncle. Famous names for the footy club up there.

i saw it on tv. didn't think the tackler did anything illegal, salem's head hit the turf and he didn't move from that point on. i thought it was just more accidental. it was a forceful tackle but no sling involved and not a push in the back type tackle, both salem and tackler moving forward in same direction. a second tackler came in but more tackled the first tackler than salem. certainly didn't connect with salem's head. looked to me like an unlucky accident. anyway that's how it seemed to me. i haven't watched a replay other than what they showed at the time

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
