If this can be summed up in one word, it would be this: vindication.

Paul Roos, my thanks to you.

when you watch the replay. late in the last quarter they show a shot of him where I reckon he was close to tears.

today he and PJ achieved what they set out to do.

I feel so indebted to those two and the likes of Jonesy Watts and Jetta for sticking through the dark years.

I reckon we've managed Oliver superbly. This midfield. Seriously. So exciting.

I hope none of our people ever copy what carlton and norf supporters did when they thought they had some talent. Opening Big Footy threads asking "who has the best midfield", followed by 20 paragraphs why they think theirs is the burgeoning superpower. So embarrassing.

But you are correct. We finally look to have a bucket load of actually talented footballers running through the middle. Watch them start to line up from other clubs now. This is the sort of win that gets the footy world talking.

BEST:

Hawthorn: Rioli, Smith, Hodge, Lewis, Mitchell

That fall from the top is going to be like plummeting off a cliff. I cannot wait.

Wow I went today just hoping we could compete. Did not see that coming especially after last weeks shocking game that we just won.

Wow that last quarter was just so exciting and to see just how happy all the supporters were and the big smiles on the players faces when they were walking around the boundary was awesome. So many highlights.

Max- Just love him. A shame he couldnt finish off with that goal but was brilliant all day. Especially his intercept marks in the backline

Jones- Brilliant game and people questioned him last week but he is our man

Viney career high 39 possies and just goes in hard, times I wish he just kicked it instead of looking for the hand pass but what a champion

Weiderman- Nice debut- Looks good when kicking for goal and had a few goal assists.

Watts- thought he set the game up with his first half 3 goals. Just a beautiful user of the ball

anyway cant go through them all but happy to see Stretch play well and Oliver getting back up on his feet after Cyril smashed him

also kudos to Pedo. Good replacement for Hogan and thought he was handy today. Took some nice grabs and kicked a nice goal.

Anyway just really happy and hope we can go on with it next week.

Both McDonald boys were also good.

I saw this on twitter. Is this true?

Great to see Garry Lyon in the Melbourne rooms before the game. Apparently delivered an emotional pre-game speech

That Gold Coast game maybe the most important game we have had in years. We stole it.

But a bunch of young kids realized that winning is so much better than losing and they are prepared to fight hard for it.

Time will tell.

But i think a few of our older players may not play again in Red and Blue....

I love watching the game in the pub where all the neutral supporters are cheering on the dees!

not a great choice for the first game at the G I've missed this year.

Imagine if we put in efforts like that in many other games this year....

I have no problem with the Rioli shirtfront- that's what footy is about.  I think people are missing the bit where Oliver got up and played his part in a winning side.  Footy is a contact sport, I would hope that if our players were in the same situation every single one would take that option to smash the opposition player.

Without Poppy and Cyril the Hawks game plan is stuffed.  No wonder they are hunting Tom Mitchell.

Not if it hits the head it's not!! Or are some heads more "sacrosanct" than others?

Glad to see the Ch7 news has picked up the Mitchell hit on Watts (while Watts was on the ground) too.

I'd love to see the Rioli on Jetta, and Jones on Rioli tackles in split frame. Reckon they'd be almost identical, apart from the outcomes, obviously.

I was thinking this. This needs to be brought to the attention of the umpires department

My better-half who is a late convert to the game  made mention today how we (MFC) seem to get a) a hard deal from the umps and b) are victims of barracking by commentators like Derwayne who want us to lose!

Sorry if this is already posted - did anyone hear that caller on 693 saying that Petracca will be another 'Tom Scully' situation and he'll go to the Hawks?

Apparently, they've been in his ear since he got drafted....anyone hear anything like this?

anyone see the cheap little open slap Mitchell did to Watts? Just saw it on the sport highlights. Not much in it but still a chape shot and I hope Rioli's spear tackle gets looked at.

He isn't a free agent, he needs to be traded.

The Scully situation was unique because GWS could take any player from any team, relax.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
