Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

The point remains that I don't believe he is finished at AFL level.

I was like you before the St Kilda game.

It's genuinely upsetting to write Grimes off because you can tell he works harder than anyone and is a great guy, but he just no longer has what it takes to play good consistent football at AFL level.

Agree unfortunately. Nobody enjoys putting a pen through Jack's name, but he's not taking us forward.

As far as future prospects go, I really like the look of Joel Smith. Excellent pace, good size and very composed.

Full marks to the encouraging young blokes down on the fence who were calling him "SOS" every time he ran past.

"Nice goal SOS!!!"

Everyone seems to think that Grimes will get picked up by Richmond, I assume because his brother plays there, well that's about as logical as Prestia coming to Melbourne because his mum and dad barrack for Melbourne.

I would think that Richmond will go the youth path and doubt they would be interested in a player who has failed at another club, they've done that too often in the past.

Will he get another contract, not sure but whatever, I hope he gets another gig if he does get delisted by us.

Hopefully not Richmond, their feral fans will turn on him after a couple of games when they see all his turnovers.

I admit I believe in depth players like Grimes and Michie more than most on here. Right now, the VFL ladder is backing up that belief. They are certainly a major step up from the Pigdogs and Couchs of previous years.

I see great potential in ANB. I don't see the sense in letting Vanders stroll back in when he's stunk it up for the majority of the season. He should've been made to earn his spot back.

Some are not afforded one average game, whereas others are afforded several in a row. I think performances should be assessed equally to determine the best 22 players every week and that simply isn't happening.

Anyway, I've bashed this drum more than enough times.

Yes Jack is guaranteed to get a 2nd chance. Not "good enough" apparently yet many others such as Garlett, Vandenburg, Dawes play poorly for Casey yet get selected ??? !!!???

Hunt had a good 4 weeks than very average in last 3 weeks. O.Mcdonald has had 8 poor games in the last 9 weeks. Development is the reason afforded but it does lead to losses being tolerated.

I don't like the treatment of ANB by the selection panel either, but he's clearly not doing what the coaches are instructing (whatever that is).

I think he is a gun inside mid. Problem is to play inside mud for the 1s he has to be better then tyson viney jones etc.

He is a very good player. And I've jumped on him as my but but he needs to develop some fitness and outside game.

I hope he can have a big pre season and cement a spot in 2017

I watched a preseason match sim session earlier this year where a thin newbie ran back after an overlap kick, leapt high in the air and got an intercept hand on an otherwise unstoppable ball. Then he followed up to reverse the ball back the other way. Received much praise from his teammates. I had no idea who he was and had to ask around. Todd Viney and some of the assistants on the boundary were looking at each other smiling in amazement.

It was Joel Smith.

He looked very light and understandably had no tank for repeat running, but did quite a few things that showed he has a good football brain and a freakish leap.

Don't know yet if he will make it, but I'm a fan already. Hope he gets a few AFL games next year.

Another 18 months and he'll be a regular IMO.  From an athletic perspective he has all the attributes, speed, endurance, height and huge leap.  His skill level is good considering he only returned to footy recently.  It's just a coaching development thing.  I have faith in the guys developing our talent.  He will make it.

No he wasn't. Michie was by a mile and has been in the best 2 for the last 4 games. He was terrific again today but I realise that he has been written of on this blog. He will do well in Casey's b&F and at 50's for the Liston is worth a few bob on winning that as well, particularly ass he will play the rest of the season at Casey. Missed by 2 votes last year (from 8 games when the winner played 18). Michie played HBF for the whole game and still kicked 2.

Yep - as I said in a previous thread, there won't be a lot of time in between him sitting down with Goodwin who will say "thanks for trying, good luck after footy" and winning the Casey B&F, which he should do by the sounds.  I know you (and others such as P-Man) believe he's been hard done by; I just think he's an unfortunate victim of the harsh reality of professional sport: if those behind the steering wheel don't believe in you, you won't get a lot chance to prove them wrong, and failure becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.  There are only 22 places in the team and they're always going to pick the team they think is best, that's their job at the end of the day.

Either way, there's not much justice in the world for players like Michie.  Best of luck to him.

Edit: and for what it's worth, he's got some pretty good company in that boat with two former MFC captains.

If I was a betting man I would put some money on him for the Liston...he had another great game today.

Ok, let's hope the 27 year old Grimes who lacks a yard and makes questionable decisions with the footy on a regular basis can turn his game around at the top level.

Yep. I don't bet either but he has been terrific for the last 4 or 5 weeks and been named in the best for the last 8 games. May be worth breaking my duck (is that the right saying?)

He was alright. Wind played havoc with the ball and did not help the big fellas but he is going to be good. Somebody to kick to in the forward line. Weed was also good today. Real good.

It seems all the VFL grounds are in wind tunnels. Every week we hear how conditions didn't favour the big men.

Today was not so bad (except the bacon sandwiches were horrible) but last week and the Bulldogs games would have stressed the Concorde.

I have watched the last 3 games. The Footscray game had a wind that comfortably favoured one end by 5-6 goals. The Sandy game out at Cranbourne last week was easily a 4 goal wind to the right of screen. Today, a 3 goal wind also blew to the right of vision. I'd have hated to have been a tall forward in any of the three games.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
