think it is much more than that, ps. jack himself has changed in his application to the game, rather than his teammates. still, it always helps to play with better teammates.

I had a good chat to Jack about this, it is a bit of everything, he is only expected to play his role now, not be a saviour, the skills of the whole team have improved and he can expect a ball to land in his lap now more often than not, instead of over his head or to his side, his teamates are also reading his game a lot better and know where to run to get a good pass or handball from him, he also knows to follow the mantra espoused by Roos, you have to be rounded, ie attack and defend, you play your role, you stay in the team

Well done Jack. Talk about perseverance...   not just his but us as supporters...lol  . Hes playing well and kudos to the man.

Something else has changed...  might just be me but it seems others are NOW prepared to kick it to him which brings him more into the play.  His contested marks using his body have vaulted to a new level of game this year.  Look forward to him playing out with the Dees. I still think he has more to offer

Amazing, if I'd just taken Nathan Burke's slant on Jack Watt's game (from the from the radio broadcast) then he'd be getting delisted.

I would say Jacky boy is the most loyal player in the AFL.

To stick around after what he has gone through is sensational.

Nathan Jones gets that award (plus the Atlas Award for carrying the entire team on his shoulders for much of his footballing life).

Interesting that T Mac was named BOG by most Demonlanders, but only got 1 vote from each coach

I think both coaches knew the game was won in that first qtr and Jack influenced the result the most out of anyone in that qtr.

I've been a massive Jack Watts fan since day dot. I remember getting my whole family all hyped up for his debut against Collingwood. He got creamed, they have laughed at him ever since. It has gotten to the point where they just cannot - and will not - accept that Watts is becoming a quality footballer. I feel as though a lot of opposition fans are in the same boat. But at some stage I think they will all have to admit that Watts is a quality football player. Good signing if true.

I've also noticed this a lot. This morning Ox on SEN stated he would pick Watts over Nic Nat now and Melbourne made the right decision. No surprise, Ox was barraged with a heap of messages like 'What have you been smoking? etc".

Now I'm not saying that everyone should think Watts is a better player, but to think it's a ridiculous statement like most listeners were expressing just shows they still think of Jack Watts circa 2016 and more accurately JW Neeld era.

Also interesting to note that most on here didn't rate Nathan Jones highly (many left him off completely), yet the press I think rated him equal B.O.G. with Tyson and Viney.

IMO he's more consistent than NN.

Watch Footy show tomorrow night for the fastest par 5 segment. Featured today in ghastly conditions on the 18th at Yarra Yarra hitting into the wind. Angus Brayshaw  teed off (Jack told me Angus hits a driver 280 meters) to Sam Newman who hit it up to the green for Jack watts to chip it onto the green and Uncle James Brayshaw to putt. Unfortunately James had to wait for the ball to stop on the green, as, in that wind on a sloping green the ball took ages to settle. James putt was close and Angus who had raced up the fairway had to put in the par putt. You will have to watch the segment to see if they break the record.

Angus and jack are seriously good golfers

This. Even for the first couple of "Roos years", in the pre-season it was expected that he'd play as a sort of midfield-distributor in 2014, and as a wingman in 2015. So he spent those pre-seasons working on his speed & endurance and streamlining his body. So that when he got inevitably shifted to fill a gap in the forward line at some stage of the season, he got easily brushed aside.

But for the 2016 pre-season, it was anticipated that he would be played as a tall forward. Therefore, FINALLY, he spent the pre-season bulking up, working on his core strength, and now he's no longer brushed aside. In addition, he has now finally matured physically, so that he is able to bulk up.

There's no way that 2014 and 2015 were wasted - the extra skills & nous he picked up along the line have really helped his all-round game in 2016. Moving Jack back to defence when the other team gets a run-on seems to stop it more often than not these days. As an earlier poster suggested, he's better now for having been thrown around in different positions in the past. But it's only this year that he has the physical strength to be a contested ball winner, on the ground & in the air.

I know I should leave this alone but something just doesn't sit right with me when people make these sort of comments.  It's like the bully in the school yard who picks a fight, loses and then wants to be friends.

WGO I have no problem with critique.  What I hate is "gave the kid hell".  You've recognized you were wrong in your judgement (as we've all been on issues) and I just hope next time a player disappoints you you'll stick to critique and refrain from "giving them hell".  You'll have lots of opportunity to practice the skill - as we all will.

But that's just me.  Credit to you for honestly stating your position.

BTW, friggin fantastic that he's found his way and looks set for a meaningful second half of his career with us.

With all due respect, calm down. The club talked Jack up as a saviour and I like many others brought into the hype. I'm a passionate fan and passionately voiced my frustration. I don't liken this to bullying, losing a fight etc etc..

Gave Jack hell? Yeah I guess I did but I couldn't be prouder watching him evolve.

Thats being a fan. Apologies for not having your grace as a supporter..

Good on you Jack

Agree with this - some of the behavior towards Watts by our fans was really ugly and toxic.

He's very mentally tough individual. To have copped all the pressure and negativity hurled at him since he was thrown to the wolves in his debut through until now shows the character and toughness he has. I can't recall anyone in football having as much crap thrown at them as Watts has endured. Now he can finally flip off all the haters and stand tall as a quality player. Will be happy when the news is official, but for now I'm just wrapt for him as a person to be producing the quality he was always capable of. Good onya Jack!

I have been a big Watts fan ever since he started, A very very nice young man as well, the type if your daughter came home with him you would be very sure he would look after her! That from me is a big accolade! In this world of over the top Footballers who are full of themselves he has a good moral compass I believe! And, ah also, he can play a bit! ;)

It's interesting that you of all people rates Jack so highly Picket, given he's never been a contested ball animal, which is the type you seem to love.

I have met a childhood friend of JWs who is still in close contact.

He is a genuinely nice bloke ,according to her and she was a lovely young woman.

She showed me a photo of Jack at a party covered in bubble wrap and soft foam from head to foot(from off season).

Either he is really afraid of getting hurt or he has a sense of humour.

I still wouldn't let my daughter date a footballer though Picket.

Merchant Banker Yes.Footballer no.

Have always had a soft spot of Jack, and he's playing great footy this year.

i recall mentioning several years ago that he always had the volts (potential) but needed the amps (momentum) to produce the Wattage (energy) that we wanted. W=V x A.  Now he has - a fantastic season and well done Jack.

Abe - have you watched him recently?  Sure no manic headlong into every scrimmage type, but he has possibly won more contested ball and marks this year than in any two prior full seasons.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
