I don't know enough of the intricacies, as that sort of detail has never interested me, however, Worsfold has already publicly stated that he won't stand in the way of a player if they want to leave.  It's a pragmatic and correct approach under the circumstances.  He will only want committed players in 2017.

I don't know if we'd have to trade, etc., but I don't believe Essendon will stand in the way of a player (Hibberd) wanting to leave.

Agree that it's a pragmatic and correct approach, but unfortunately Worsfold isn't the only one with his skin in the game, and the likes of Dodoro have a history of being as obstinate and obstructive as possible with these sorts of things.

I hope you're right, but I have doubts.

I agree that they won't be easy to deal with, but I'm comfortable with the view they'll let him leave.

Worsfold was clear in his comments and they resonated with me because they made sense.

Time will tell.

I share your doubts.

For Ryder, Dodoro wanted Port's 1st pick (#17) plus Wines or Winguard!!!!  They went to informal mediation and only relented at the last minute (for pick 17 and 37) because Ryder threatened to sit out 2015 and the AFL told EFC not to go to the Grievance Tribunal.  Last year he demanded and got pick 5 from the Saints for Carlisle - a Sting if ever I saw one!

The only hope I see for Dodoro reaching a fair trade deal is if he is told to avoid bad PR from causing more anguish to a player whose career EFC have already seriously damaged.

Those trade scenarios were pre bans.

Very different circumstances.

Why would that change EFC's positions on trades?  I don't think that changes Dodoro's disposition, at all!

You're not listening.

I said that the circumstances are very different.  Check - they are.

I said they would still be difficult to deal with.  Check - you agree.

I said Worsfold has publicly stated that he won't stand in the way of a player wanting to leave due to the circumstances they've been put in.

Now you may disagree with that and think Worsfold is a liar.  I don't.  It makes zero sense to try and make one of those banned players stay if they don't want to.

Perhaps my common sense differs to yours.

That said, as stated (again) I don't know what it will take to get a player like Hibberd in the door.  But I am comfortable that if he wants us and we want him we'll get a deal done.

I'm not going to waste any more time on how when why's or won'ts. I'll leave others to type pages of waffle.

That's a very good (and BIG) point of difference. Any leverage that EFC had.....has gone.

Love to see a player or two grow some and just tell the Bummers to just go ... themselves!!

I remember Hurley representing the Bombers on AFL 360 a few times to discuss everything, feels like the kind of guy who won't leave them now that he's made himself a public persona representing the club (Backed himself into an "im loyal" corner) Probably fears being harassed by the stand by herd crowd in the street if he ever left.

I think Essendon's stance will depend on the player. It's much easier to replace a Hibberd than a Hurley

In normal circumstances you'd expect so, but this is Essendon.

issue is that essendon, thru dodoro, will demand a first round pick for him.

i wouldn't want to part with much more than a third rounder.

How can you expect us to get hibberd with a third rounder, when we got melksham with pick 25. If we compare the players, hibberd is far better. Technically if melksham is worth pick 25 hibberd is worth pick 10-15. Not saying that is what I would give up for hibberd, all I am saying is he is far better than melk, who we got for pick 25.

melksham was a second round pick as a 25 year old player the first year he was with us - i think he was way overrated at this, would've thought closer to a third rounder.

lumumba i'd say cost us the equivalent of a fourth round pick - our original offer to the pies - at 28 years of age.

hibberd i'd say is worth about a third rounder - probably the first half of the third round, but i would've thought a pick around 35-45 or so.

i don't mind if he comes to us as i think he's a pretty good player, but do i think he'll be worth our first pick in a draft, around 28-35 or so? i don't. so therefore, i reckon his value is around about our third round pick.

the alternative option is to give them our second and third rounder for their third rounder and hibberd, which would actually bring our third round pick higher as a result. that'd be my preference.

You make good points DA..  I do agree that melksham was overrated incredibly by using our pick 25. I also agree with your comment about lumumba. But Hibberd is would come to us as a better player than both lumumba and melksham, therefore worth a better pick. Realistically, we will have to use our first pick. Do I think we will? No. Do I think we should? No. But for those interested in him, he is a very good player that will take a good pick to get him. Everyone knows Dodoro drives a hard bargain and won't settle for any late picks. I agree with your last suggestion. I also think that would please both parties. Otherwise, if we really want hibberd, perhaps we would have to include a player... who should it be/what do you think is realistic

I though Hibberd can be a delisted FA? I still think Melksham will be a handy addition to the line up, has the right tools and a close relationship With Goodwin/Macca gives him hope to become a fairly decent player in our lineup.

As for Hibberd he is another good competitor with an excellent kick so I'm all for him just adding further strings to an so far impressive bow?

If we really want Hibberd, and he really wants to play for us, then we push him into a situation where he takes the scum to court, and leaves them for zero compo.

Why would he want to come to us, but leave his cheating/lying employer heavily compensated?

I have heard he actually wants to stay at essendon, but wherever he is next year, he wants 4 years and essendon only offering something like 2. He will undoubtedly leave essendon if he is offered far may elsewhere. Whether that is us or not, I am not sure. Personally I don't want to fork out the big bucks for him

4 years may not automatically mean big bucks though.

If he has the disposal that many here say he has, and he can find the ball as often as his stats suggest, then I am all for chasing him. Good dispoal, and often, out of half back, will win us games. Its what our entire game plan is based on now.

Fair point. I am more than happy to take him, as long as he isn't asking for that big money contract

Cant see us paying a big bucks contract for a player like Hibberd.

We are almost (but not quite), a destination club now. We will be chasing far larger fish soon.

Why would Hibberd or Hurley want to leave, didn't Rohan Connolly write that Essendon are going to win the next three premierships?

They are a delusional bunch at essendon, read this for a good laugh :)

Hibberd as others have stated would immediately be our equal best and most consistent defender alongside Jetta.

(Tom McDonald is still too inconsistent for those who may bring him up).

Along with possessing the MFC prerequisite card 'competitor', he also has a damaging laser-like left foot.

And I think it's an understatement to say that we lack kicking skills in our back half.

Get him.

Just left a really interesting meeting with a mate who is well connected in the Bomber sanctum. I thought that Hurley is a pipe dream and he'll stay but apparently not. There is thought that Hibberd and Hurley who are mates and not training with the others are a package deal. The Dons believe that they are either both staying or both going to the Dees. Right now, they dont know which way they are leaning but are confident that it is a two-club race. The Dons do not want to let them go for free and will be looking for a trade worthy of two All Australians (Hibberd apparently was close in 2013 or 14?). So they are keeping an eye on the McDonald and Hogan contract situation and see if we get anything that they want. Wholeheartedly will screw their boys over if they try and walk.

BomberBlitz are reporting on our thread here. Nothing interesting to report bar the fact they all believe that Hibberd is worth a first rounder but he's not good enough to be offered a 3rd year on his contract.

    THE CAVALRY ARRIVES by Megg

The injury plague which has beset the Demons 2024 campaign is finally starting to dissipate and with consecutive wins over GWS Giants and a 2-point nail-biter in Adelade, a sense of optimism is rising.  Some commentators are now asking whether the Dees can make finals? A huge surprise with team selection this week when it was announced that champs Olivia Purcell, Paxy Paxman and Eden Zanker would play.   Hallelujah!  The cavalry has arrived. St Kilda missed the finals last season on pe

    GOLDIE'S METTLE by Meggs

On a perfect night for football at the home of the Redlegs, Norwood Oval, it was the visiting underdogs Melbourne who led all night and hung on to prevail in a 2-point nail-biter. In the previous round St Kilda had made it a tough physical game to help restrict Adelaide from scoring and so Mick Stinear set a similar strategy for his team. To win it would require every player to do their bit on the field plus a little bit of luck.  Fifty game milestoner Sinead Goldrick epitomised

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.
